The Experience Matters
Leading Lives of Impact and Success
Holy Cross College offers you a distinct learning experience with our Four Pillars education. Your senior capstone presentation lets you reflect on your service learning, global experience, professional internship, and classroom experience. By graduation, you will be ready to take on the world—professionally, intellectually, personally, and spiritually.
The close-knit community Holy Cross offers is unmatched. Here, we say, “The experience matters,” and my experience has, without a doubt, been a great one.
“I get the chance to be the first-ever Holy Cross mascot, Basil the Saint Bernard. My major in communications and minor in sports management have given me many great lessons both in and out of the classroom. And I have gained the competency to succeed in the professional world.
“Last semester, I took Public Speaking, and it gave me the interview skills I needed to talk confidently and with fluidity in my interview this past summer when I landed a summer job with the Baltimore Orioles. Wanting to find a student job as well, I contacted a Notre Dame sports blogger and eventually got a job as the 2013–14 beat writer for Notre Dame men’s basketball. This job allowed me to dive headfirst into the world of sports journalism and gave me the chance to sit up in the press box during Notre Dame football games and interview players and coaches.
“With postgraduation plans of moving back to Baltimore and getting a sports journalism position in that area (hopefully with the Orioles), Holy Cross has helped me get my foot in the door in my desired field of work.

As part of the Four Pillars, you will participate in service learning throughout the local and global community. Activities include helping community members with their taxes, teaching children, providing companionship to the elderly, and more.
“The most significant part about the Holy Cross experience is growing and developing into a well-rounded individual who is an asset to the future of our society. I am confident that no matter what stage of life I am in, I can always rely on the gifts Holy Cross has given me to help me through any situation.”
“It was my dream to be the next Rudy and make it into Notre Dame, but after my first semester at Holy Cross, I had already declared my major and decided I wanted to stay. I fit in here. I felt like I was meant to be here. You can only put into words so much what it’s like to live the Holy Cross experience. It is beyond any other I’ve ever had. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

My time at the Lighthouse Autism Center allowed me to see the variety of therapy that can be done with individuals on the autism spectrum. It confirmed that I want to work in the field of applied behavioral analysis therapy. Also, I was able to travel to Prague, Czech Republic, to attend the World Psychiatric Conference. This was an eye-opening experience I wouldn’t have had elsewhere; Holy Cross was one of the only student groups in attendance. The various travel and professional opportunities I’ve taken advantage of have helped me discern what I want to do as not only my job but also my vocation.

The most exhilarating part of my summer internship was shadowing the director of business development. I learned how creating partnerships generates new business opportunities. I also learned how to provide innovative ideas to improve company efficiency and proactively find ways of generating new streams of revenue. I was even offered a position with the company when the summer was over. If you aspire to be a leader or effective communicator, you need to be a master of all trades. Holy Cross offers you that holistic approach to education.

While at Holy Cross, I interned at the retirement house of the Sisters of the Holy Cross. I went on the Latino Immigration and Culture experience in South Bend. I served boys at the Juvenile Correctional Facility. I have learned many things through each experience, and I had devoted professors to guide and support me. Holy Cross College prepared me to continue to study theology at one of the most outstanding Catholic universities. I cannot even express all of the ways Holy Cross College has formed me. I have been warmly welcomed and loved there. I have felt at home. I always smile as I think of Holy Cross College, where I am loved and love people.

I had an internship with the Phoenix Suns, primarily in the premium sales department. I learned that to be successful in sales, you must be a good relationship builder. The experience provided me with insight into the business world but also made me realize that this is the type of work I can see myself doing in the future. I was fortunate enough to obtain a job through this internship, and I am very excited to see where my career will take me. Holy Cross has helped shape the man I have become. Not only have I grown up significantly, but I have been given a job. If not for the internship experience, I am not sure if I would have had this unique opportunity.
