HEAVY DUTY CHANGEABLE CAN MIXERS WITH DOUBLE PLANETARY MIXING ACTION
Ross DOUBLE Planetary Mixers are pre-cision engineered for powerful thorough mixing, and are built with extra rugged construction for dependable trouble-free operation. They are specially designed to mix and disperse the heaviest pastes more thoroughly and in less time than other types of Pony or Change Can Mixers.
The Mixers feature DOUBLE Planetary stirrer action for most effectively kneading and mixing paste materials of the heaviest consistency or highest viscosity. Each stirrer revolves on its own axis, and in addition, both stirrers are revolved at a slightly slower speed in a planetary mo-tion around the entire inside of mixing can. Stirrers overlap each other as well as center of can to provide a continuous mixing action that is ideally suited for heavy materials or those having thixo-tropic characteristics.
The close clearance between stirrers sides of can make it impossible for
any unmixed material to accumulate on sides and also provides a highly bene-ficial shearing action. With each revolu-tion of stirrers around can, the stirrers sweep very close to sides of can six times. In addition, the stirrers pass close to each other six times, at different positions in can, during each revolution of stirrers around can, and subject the material to an intense compressive and shearing ac-tion. Therefore, during each revolution of stirrers around the can, the material is sub-jected to twelve intense shearing actions. These occur at different positions in can and at different successive points along sides of can with each revolution. Stirrers have special angular outer edges to effec-tively break down and disperse lumps or agglomerates at each point of close clear-ance.
The bottom of stirrers sweep entire area close to bottom of can, and are spe-cially pitched to continuously thrust mate-rial upwards off bottom to prevent strati-fication. The constant vertical and lateral motion of the material produces an ex-
ely effective mixing action, and dry inert pockets cannot form as all of the
batch is thoroughly contacted by stirrers. This highly efficient mixing action pro-duces a more homogeneous mix in less time, and in many cases the partial dis-persion obtained greatly reduces produc-tion costs in subsequent operations.
#130-CDM 65 Gal. Mixer with variable speed "V" belt motor drive and automatic motor operated hydraulic raising device.
Another feature of Ross pouBLE, Plane-tary Mixers is that the can does not re-volve, and is securely locked on base of Mixer for maximum safety in operation. This enables cans to be fitted with Slide Lever Gates for completely emptying cans without removing from Mixer, and stirrers can be kept in operation to assist in dis-charge of heavy non-fluid materials out the adjustable gate. In addition, cans can be jacketed for heating or cooling mate-rial during mix, when desired. Stainless steel stirrers and cans can be furnished, when required.
The larger Mixers feature special raised base to permit using fork lift truck for moving cans to and from Mixer. Cans are also equipped with cast steel lift trunnions for use with overhead hoist, and with stirrers raised entire head swivels 360° around column to facilitate direct vertical removal of cans off base. In addition, a dolly truck, with detachable pulling handle is available as an optional extra. Cans are readily secured to the dolly truck, and both are locked to Mixer during mixing. The dolly and can are quickly detached and removed from Mixer after mix within a few seconds. Special floating type outer scraper arm which is self-adjusting for out of round cans can also be furnished, when required.
Stirrers on all size Mixers are driven by heavy wide faced cut steel gears operating in continuous lubrication in enclosed heavy cast semi-steel machined gear box. Large diameter stirrer shafts operate in heavy duty roller bearings in gear box, and throughout the Mixers feature extra heavy construction of all parts to with-stand the strain of the heaviest most vis-cous materials.
In Ross DOUBLE Planetary Mixers the mixing action is continuous as the mate-rial is constantly subjected to a rubbing and shearing action in every position of the stirrers, and no particle of material escapes the action of the stirrers. All pro-duction size Mixers feature a vertical raise of stirrers from can to provide the greatest ease of cleaning down stirrers between batches. With single motor drive, the Mixers are economical to operate, and are used extensively to reduce production costs by consistently providing more thor-ough mixing and dispersing in less time.

Area of can con-tacted by stirrers during only one revolution of stir-rers around can (2 seconds). Posi-tion of stirrers advances 4 1/2 ° with each succes-sive revolution to sweep entire area and all points along sides of can.
Sweep of stirrers between each other. Stirrers overlapping the center of can, as well as each other, provide a knead-ing and shearing effect as they pass each other at very close clearance.
Angle of approach of stirrers to side of can. Note the intense compres-sive action exerted on materials caught between which develops a tremendous shear-ing action to break down and disperse out lumps and agglomerates.
The Ross DOUBLE Planetary Mixers shown at left feature manually operated raising and lowering device. The can is securely clamped on base and removed by simply turning handwheel at front. The base and can is raised to stirrers for mixing or lowered for removal of can by turning handle at side of column.
