1887 - 2014 Celebrating 127 Years
Leading People to a Life Changing
Connection with Jesus Christ
August 15, 2014 VOLUME XLIII NUMBER 14
All mothers and sons (ages 16 and younger) are invited to attend the Lookouts’ game along with fireworks on Friday, August 29. Meet at the church by 6:30 p.m. The game begins at 7:15 p.m. and the cost is $2.00 per person. Please sign up at the children’s check-in station. For questions see Alex Henderson.
“I look around at us…you know
what I see? Losers. I mean, like, folks
who have lost stuff.” I can say that
this quote by Peter Quill sums up the
church quite nicely. Well, maybe not
nicely, but certainly appropriately.
Since the church’s beginnings,
nowhere else could you find a more rag-tag bunch
of misfits, losers, and all around outcasts. In fact,
one of the biggest insults hurled at Christianity in
its early days was that it was a religion for the poor
and uneducated.
As a loser myself, I wear the title as a badge
of honor. See, I know that Jesus, speaking to his
disciples, said, “… the first shall be last and the
last shall be first. He who would be greatest among
you must first be a servant.” So, really, I don’t see
any shame in being a loser. As far as the world is
concerned, I am probably somewhere below
garbage collector on the success totem pole, but in
Christ’s kingdom, I am called royalty, a co-heir
with the Son of promise! (Just like you are, in case
you forgot.)
Having read through Mark recently, I am
reminded of just how unpopular Jesus was with the
powerful and influential people of society. The
poor, the sick, the outcasts, and the sinners
crowded around him, wanting to feel even a touch
or hear a word of hope and love. Christians, ones
who really live it out, have very rarely found great
acclaim or notoriety. Sure, you have one or two
every century, such as Billy Graham or Mother
Teresa, but Jesus’ example and instructions are
difficult to swallow and even more difficult to live.
Jesus claimed ultimate victory at his lowest
moment, not his greatest. It was not when the
people wanted to crown him king that he defeated
the great enemies of sin and death, but at the cross
where even those close to him deserted. Jesus'
example is not one of loss, but one of complete
victory. And so it is with us. We often lose in the
world’s eyes, because Jesus asks us to make
difficult sacrifices to follow him. However, we
have the glorious assurance that Jesus has already
conquered, and our struggle to carry our crosses
daily will lead to sharing in his victory!

During the month of August, HVCC
is participating in Shoes for Orphan
Souls. Please bring children’s new
shoes and socks to the church and
place them in the collection boxes in
the foyer. Information brochures are
available at the Information Station.
The church office will be
closed September 1, for the
Labor Day Holiday.
September 14, will be a very significant day here
at HVCC. First, we encourage every one of our
members and friends to personally invite
someone to come to church that day. A carry-in
dinner will follow worship service. What better
way to get to know people than to sit down to a
wonderful meal together.
Second - “Expand the Family” is the theme of
our capital stewardship campaign which will
begin September 14. We will begin raising
needed funds to help us in various building
remodeling and improvements. The foyer will be
completely remodeled to make it bigger, brighter
and even more welcoming. The awning at the
entrance way of the north parking lot will be
changed to be similar to the one over the school
entrance. Improvements will also be made to the
platform in the sanctuary. This campaign will
last until the Sunday before Thanksgiving,
November 23. When we gather for worship that
day we will announce the total amount of funds
collected for these projects.
Expand the Family
