A. THE COMPANY


Phase Motion Control, founded 1985, specialise in innovative motion control components and solutions, both electronic and electromechanical, reciprocally optimised to move forward the boundary of achievable performance in automation.

The Company was started in 1985 as the motion control division of Phase S.r.l., from which it separated in 1994.

From the onset, PMC developed specialty drive products for European Space Agency, Arianespace, ESO; in1992-1995 developed and installed the 10 m diameter direct drives at the hearth of the VLT telescope, currently the largest in the world

In the field of industrial products, an 1991 PMC started production of the range of low inertia PM servomotors Ultract designed for OEM. The latest version of standard servo motor range named ULIII was released in 2004. (General Purpose Market).

The development of OEM standard products was from the beginning driven and derived from the innovative technology developed for the specialty market; PMC hold a large number of patents and in the past also sold several licenses, e.g. to to SBC (later ELAU) in 1994

In 1998 PMC develops and manufactures the first serie of Direct Drive Permanent Magnet motors named TK. This type of motor was used mainly in the Machine Tools Market (Rotary Table Axis); afterwords will be used also to drive spindles (Milling and Turning). In 2002 PMC starts to work on the Special Drives (DD PM with electronic integrated) for the ALMA radio telescope, the first truly global cooperation in pure research involving both Europe and the U.S. in the realization on a plateau in the Atacama desert of the largest radio telescope in the world, over a period of 10 years.

In 2002 PMC announces the shipment of the first beta release of TW Systems (“intelligent motor” with built-in drive, CANOpen link, position controller) to a few selected partners/Customers for field testing; the production started in 4Q2002. Consequently right now PMC can claim 10 years of experience with Integral Motors (General Purpose Market).

In 2001 PMC opened a new productive site in Ningbo (China), the Phase Motion Control Ningbo. The main reason was the possibility to manage and control directly the rare earth permanent magnet technology for the magnets production.

In 2009, in the new building (40.000m2 covered and 5 buldings), PMC Cixi is actually able to produce the complete range of PMC products portfolio (Torque Motors TK series – Integrated Motors TW series – Linear Motors Wave series).

In 2005 AxM high density and power drive was released for production. Current rating 9 A cont 20A peaK at 400 vac in a 80 (W) x 160 (H) x 145 (D) package. PLC programmability, ENDAT + CANopen interface, RS 232 and Intradrive part are standard. The AxM range was then extended to the current 400 A rating of the Ax-W water cooled units and to EtherCat interface (General Purpose Market).

In 2006 very large torque motors for giant machines are produced in modular, axial air gap configuration. Each stator module is potted in epoxy and embodies its own thermal sensors and sealed liquid cooling circuit. (Forging Presses Market)


In 2007 the new TK-D direct drive low speed generators reach 97.5% conversion efficiency at 300 kW, 250 rpm.TK-D low speed, direct drive PM generators, with 1.15 m diameter, have been tested in a mini hydro application on a variable speed turbine operating over the 230-280 rpm speed range, at 300 kW output (Power generation Market). In 2008 PMC designed and is commissioned one of the largest roof mounted (2.05 MW - photovoltaic power plant), grid connected photovoltaic plants in Europe. The plant covers the 40,000 sq meter roof of an existing logistic hub located in Casella, northern Italy and uses Ax-Sun water cooled PMC advanced power converters.

In 2014 the new PMC location in Genoa will be opened.The new plant will be inserted in a green area of 200.000m2 (named Proxima Tech Park) and will have a covered area of 24,000m2. The new plant will sport a Class A+ energy sufficient building using a combination of innovative systems both for sustainability and work condition optimization
