Kettle’s Yard the University of Cambridge’s modern and contemporary art gallery

Kettle’s Yard is a beautiful house that contains a remarkable collection of modern

art. In the house you can find paintings and sculptures by great names of early

20th century art including Miró, Henry Moore, Ben and Winifred Nicholson,

Alfred Wallis, Barbara Hepworth, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska and Christopher Wood.

As one of the participants in Curating Cambridge, the University of

Cambridge Museums’ city wide festival, we have more on than ever before!

There are new displays and exhibitions in all the spaces at and around

Kettle’s Yard this autumn – an installation by Cambridge artist Issam Kourbaj in

St Peter’s Church, wood engravings by Gwen Raverat in the house, photography

by Katherine Green and young people from North Cambridge in the Learning

Studio and a major exhibition of films and projects by Karen Guthrie and Nina

Past, Present, SomewhereFilms and Projects by Karen Guthrie & Nina Pope

A rare opportunity to enjoy the collected films and projects by artist duo Karen Guthrie & Nina Pope, in this their first gallery exhibition since they won the Northern Art Prize in 2008. Working collaboratively under the name Somewhere since the mid 90s, their participatory projects range from interactive online worlds to – in summer 2014 – a vast community-built ‘model village’ made from cob (an ancient earth building technique), a commission for the University of Cambridge’s North West Cambridge Development. Visitors to the exhibition will encounter a diversity of work from the analogue to the digital – from a cob-based installation to earlier examples of the artists’ ground-breaking digital and video works. Their acclaimed documentary films shine a light on often marginalised or unknown communities ranging from historical re-enactors (Living with the Tudors, 2007, based at Kentwell Hall near Cambridge) to seaside fugitives (Jaywick escapes, 2012). Of their first film Bata-ville: we Are Not Afraid of the Future (2005) critic Andrew O’Hehir said “It’s drily funny, sad, deeply weird and British to the very core of its being.” This exhibition follows the artists from their early video installations and websites to later large-scale sculptural work and feature-length films, screened daily in a gallery cinema.

Gwen RaveratWood Engravings

In Helen Ede’s bedroom, in the house at Kettle’s Yard, a series of wood engravings by Gwen Raverat (1885-1957) are on display. Gwen Raverat is already represented in the house in the form of a portrait by Elisabeth Vellacott. Most famous as the author of ‘Period Piece – a Cambridge Childhood’ Raverat also played a significant part in the wood engraving revival in Britain at the beginning of the 20th Century.

We are grateful to the Raverat Archive and the Fitzwilliam Museum for their assistance. A selection of Gwen Raverat cards and books are available in the shop.

Issam Kourbaj New Installation – 13 September - 26 October 2014

Born in Syria, Kourbaj has lived in Cambridge since 1989 and has been artist in residence at Christ’s College for many years. This recent work is informed by current events in his native Syria. In ‘Unearthed (In Memoriam)’ old hardback book covers are placed side by side covering much of the church floor, some covers are painted with white or coloured paint others have a black line painted across them, a representation of the ribbons placed over the photographs of the recently deceased in Syria.

I Come from a Place

Social documentary photographer Katherine Green and the ‘Club United’ group of teenage girls from North Cambridge have been photographing their community and experiences. At the same time, Katherine Green has been interviewing and taking portraits of some of the long term residents and community leaders from the area. The resulting exhibition celebrates this vibrant and welcoming part of the city.
