The International English Language Institute at Hunter College (IELI) is one of the oldest and most well-respected ESL institutes in New York City. Our outstanding faculty members and supportive administrators have been helping students reach their English language goals since 1950. The IELI prepares students for the academic challenges of an American university, for success in the business world or just to reach their highest potential as English speakers. The IELI off ers full-time and part-time classes for students of all levels, from beginner to advanced, and off ers classes in the daytime, evening, and on Saturdays.

The Academic Skills Program’s supportive and challenging environment provides intensive English instruction in the skills required for success in American colleges or graduate programs. This program is ideal for anyone whose goal is to apply to an English-language university. Academic Skills classes run in 8 week semesters and have 8 levels. Upon successful completion of one semester, students can move up to the following level.
Each level in the Academic Skills Program consists of the following courses:
GrammarGrammar classes review the form and function of grammatical structures. Students learn to master various topics and integrate them into their writing and speaking.
Academic WritingWriting classes are designed to help students develop their written English in preparation for college-level courses. Students focus on learning the elements of eff ective essay writing: outlining, organizing, composing and self-editing.
Academic ReadingReading classes help students improve their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. Students focus on academic reading strategies including: skimming, summarizing, reading for detail and reading for inference.
Oral SkillsOral Skills classes focus on improving students’ listening comprehension and spoken fl uency. Students work on improving pronunciation and expanding vocabulary.
*Students who complete level 8 of the program and score a 10 on the Departmental Exam can waive the TOEFL score when applying to any CUNY undergraduate program except Baruch.

Daytime Classes (8 weeks, 144 hours) $2100
Daytime Academic Skills classes are scheduled from 8:00am to 5:00pm from Monday to Friday and have a total of 18 academic hours per week for Full-Time students. Daytime classes can also be taken on a Part-Time basis. Schedules will vary based on level.
Evening Classes (8 weeks, 144 hours)
Evening Academic Skills classes are scheduled from 5:35pm to 9:35pm from Monday to Thursday and have a total of 18 academic hours per week for Full-Time students. Evening classes can also be taken on a Part-Time basis. Schedules will vary based on level.
4-Week Program (4 weeks, 72 hours) $1300
Students can take the Academic Skills Program as a 4-Week Program for a short-term, intensive course of study. Students begin in week 1 or week 5 of the semester.

*F-1 Students must enroll as Full-Time Students in an 8 week program. However, you can register as an F-1 for the 4 Week Program if you will be leaving the country soon or if you would like to try the program before committing to the full 8 week program.

The IELI’s TOEFL Test Preparation Program is designed to help students develop the language skills and test-taking strategies needed to achieve a competitive score on the reading, writing, listening
and speaking segments of the TOEFL iBT.
Skills and Practice for the TOEFL iBT (8 weeks, 144 hours) $2100This advanced level Full-Time Program is the most in-depth way to prepare for the TOEFL test. Students must have completed the equivalent of Level 6 in the Academic Skills Program in order to register. Daytime Classes (see Academic Calendar)
TOEFL iBT (7 weeks, 35 hours) $600This Part-Time course will help students build the necessary skills to prepare for the TOEFL exam. Suitable for students in levels 5-8. Saturdays, 9:00am to 1:10pm
Special Programs: Saturday Integrated Skills (7 weeks, 21 hours) $299These academic English courses focus on integrating reading, writing, grammar and listening and speaking skills in order to help students develop and solidify the language skills they need to succeed in the workplace and to pursue their academic goals. Saturdays, 9:30am-12:30pm

July @ the IELI (4 weeks, 64 hours) $1,350Spend your summer soaking in the sun and sights of New York City! July@theIELI is an intensive summer program with 4 hours of daily instruction and weekly cultural adventures in NYC with the IELI. Classes will include instruction and practice for improved speaking, listening, reading and writing. Trips to points of interest in New York City add a fun element to this summer program. Immerse yourself in the English Language and NYC living this summer!

Make the most out of your time in NYC with IELI Intensive English Programs. Our Intensive Programs are designed to be the most cost-effective way to master the language and improve your academic skills as quickly as possible. Customize your learning experience by combining Daytime Academic Skills classes with Elective classes, additional skills classes, Evening classes and/or Private Tutorials (additional $500 fee applies for private tutorials).
*Please note that, depending on your chosen schedule, there may be a 2-week break or more during the 8-week and 12-week intensives.
Elective Programs and Courses
Advanced Program (8 weeks, 144 hours) $2100This Full-Time course is designed for students who have completed Level 8 of the Academic Skills Program and would like to continue to develop their fluency. Classes focus on improving reading, writing and oral skills through creative expression and studying authentic texts and media.
College English Program (8 weeks, 144 hours) $2100This Full-Time course is designed for students who have completed Level 8 of the Academic Skills Program and the Advanced level and would like to prepare for study in a college or university. Students work on mastering challenging topics and preparing for college-level study through research projects and academic presentations.
English for Business (4 weeks, 18 hours) $300Prepare for success in the American workplace. This class helps you improve your fluency in both spoken and written professional communication. You will learn how to give presentations, lead and participate in meetings and make telephone calls. You will also focus on workplace culture and vocabulary.
Language and Culture (4 weeks, 18 hours) $300There is more to English than grammar rules! This class will focus on American culture and answer many important questions you have about the way Americans think, act and speak. Learn to communicate more effectively and confidently through understanding cultural norms, typical behaviors and popular slang.

Learn English and Professional job skills
What is English Plus?English Plus is English language study with specialized programs that allow you to develop a skill set within a specific area or discipline. Each specialized program of study generally comprises between 120-300 hours or more. Professional Certificates offered by Continuing Education are professionally recognized and provide you a competitive advantage when pursuing a new career or advancing in your current field.
Length of Program• Certificates designed to be completed in one year. • Students will have up to two years to complete the certificate.Note: Some certificates can be completed in one academic CE semester. (September –December) if students register for all classes.
Who can register for these programs • Students in Level 7 or higher. • Students from Level 6 can be accepted into CEP programs. An additional interview is required to make
sure their level of understanding and speaking is appropriate.

How to Apply to the IELI as a Full Time International Student
The IELI at Hunter College does not issue visas; only the I-20 form. The following steps must be taken to apply for the I-20 form required for your visa application:
1. Complete the Online Application:https://ww3.hunter.cuny.edu/ce/view.php?id=35451
2. Collection of documents: Submit a valid copy of your passport, make sure all information is visible. If you plan to travel with your spouse and/or children, a copy of their passport(s) and financial information must be provided as well. Passports must be valid for at least six months.
3. Payment information: A payment of $2,400 is required to process the application: $2100 (first semester tuition), $200 (application fee and placement exam), $35 (registration fee), $65 (international express mail fee). If your visa is denied, the application, registration and International express mail fees are non-refundable. Submission of the application must be done approximately five (5) weeks before the start of the session. Payment for each session must be paid before classes begin. To pay with a credit card, visit the following webpage: https://ielireg.hunter.cuny.edu/cers.aspx. U.S. bank check or U.S. money orders made to the order of ‘Hunter College-IELI’ are also accepted.
4. Verification of Sponsor and Funds: Verification of funds ($22,500 USD) must be submitted in the form of a bank statement or letter issued by a bank. The name on the bank statement/letter must match the sponsor document (Affidavit of Support). This document must not be older than 90 days. These must be originals, translated into English, and with the stamp/seal or signature from the bank.
5. Interview:*If your I-20 has been approved, contact the embassy or consulate of the United States in your country. Once you receive your I-20 form, be sure to have all the information and documentation required by the embassy or consulate at the time of the interview.*If you are a current F-1 student transferring into the IELI, please disregard all ‘interview’ information.
Note: Applications will not be processed until all original documents listed above are received. In order for international students to study full time, an F-1 student visa is required, unless the student has residency. Applicants must be 17 years or older.
