SEASON’S GREETINGS
Learn Lead Succeed ISSUE 4 • DEC 2018
2018 was another very busy but highly successful year for
Auburn Girls’ High and it is due to the dedication and hard work
of both our students and our staff.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those
involved in each and every success we have had this year both
big and small. We would also like to thank our parents and
carers for encouraging their daughters and wards to participate
in the many activities and opportunities provided for their
children. Below is a photo taken of a group of our prefects who
were invited by the Australian Newspaper’s “Deal Magazine” for a
panel discussion with eminent business leaders.

Principal’s Report
Dear Parents, Term 4 has once again been a productive and exciting term where we have continued to offer exciting initiates for our
students and continue to seek ways of improving our school. You will find this Newsletter continues to provide a small sample of what makes our school such a wonderful place to learn and work.
Panel Discussion As you know, at Auburn Girls, we pride ourselves in offering a broad range of leadership opportunities for our girls. In October a group of our prefects were invited by the Australian Newspaper’s “Deal Magazine” for a panel discussion
with eminent business leaders. The conversation ranged from resilience, to gender in the workplace and challenges and choices for young women as they enter the world of work. The panel was led by inspiring
women leaders in business including the Chair of Boral, Kathryn Fagg, the CEO of BAE Systems, Gabby Costigan and the CEO of the Financial Services Council, Sally Loane.
Our Captains, Sabah Charif and Nabiha Ullah were significant contributors to this discussion and proud ambassadors of our school, featuring on the magazine cover pictured. Well done girls and may you continue to Learn, Lead, Succeed.
Bell Time Adjustments 2019 After extensive consultation with the Parents and Citizens
Association of Auburn Girls High School and Staff throughout Semester 2, 2018, the school bell times will be adjusted slightly in the morning. The adjustments for 2019 are outlined below:
➢ Period 1 will begin at 8.45am, with a warning bell at 8.40am each morning.
➢ Roll Call will be at the conclusion of Period 1. Please Note:
• All other bell times remain the same. • All students are required to be seated in class by
8.45am or they will miss valuable classwork. • Teachers will be marking the Period 1 attendance roll
at 8.45am and you will be notified if your daughter is absent by SMS.
• Late students are to report to the Student Services desk.
Parents please ensure that you make arrangements for your daughter to be at school on time each day. There are far
too many girls being dropped off late by parents. Being on time is a requirement and teaches students responsibility. We seek your cooperation with this important issue. A letter was forwarded home with your daughters on the
5th December.

award acknowledges her outstanding contribution
to Auburn Girls and our local community. I am
also proud to say that the compares for this

Deputy Principal’s Report – Years 7 and 8 Another busy term has passed for Year 7 and 8 students.
Some highlights include selected Year 8
students attending the PCYC before school each
Tuesday with Ms Mahmoud to participate in
physical activities and eat a healthy breakfast,
Year 7 Swim School and excursions for History,
English, and wellbeing initiatives. Students spent
time preparing for and sitting their Yearly
Examinations in the hall.
A highlight this term was the whole day
incursion for Year 7 and 8 where each cohort
spent a day in the hall completing workshops on
cyberbullying, funded by the Federal
Government. Topics included safe use of Social
Media, respectful relationships, online bullying
and security of personal information. The
presenters provided lots of great tips for students
and everyone left thinking about their online
presence.
As the year draws to a close, I would
encourage all students to check their uniform for
2019 and prepare to purchase any new items
needed. It is a great idea to have two or three
school shirts to ensure a clean one is available to
wear every day. I also encourage students to
think about what adjustments they may need to
make to their morning routines so that they are
on school grounds by the 8.40 am warning bell,
ready to be outside their classroom at 8.45 am
for Period 1 in 2019. Year 8 and 9 students return
on Thursday 31 January.
I would like to wish everyone a happy and
safe holiday season and look forward to working
with you all again in 2019.

Year 9 and 10 have had a productive term 4 and will be looking forward to a well-earned break!
Year 10 have completed all their Yearly Examinations and assessment tasks for each subject and will be receiving their RoSA
at the end of the year-What an accomplishment! Year 10 should be proud of this milestone and looking forward to becoming a senior student.
Week 8 Year 10 will be on work experience and have the opportunity to be part of the working world; we look forward to hearing from the girls about their experiences in week 9 in career lessons. A big thank you to Ms Heemi for all her organisation to
make this happen. On the 22nd of November, Ms King and I had the pleasure
of seeing Nosrat Farela Year 10 at the Bankstown RSL receive the Community Service Award. Nosrat is a Peer support mentor, a co-founder of the Auburn Girls Environmental Alliance, Vice President of
the schools Interact Club. She is also a Youth Ambassador for
YWAM Medical ships, a Youth Ambassador for MYAN NSW and the United Nations Youth Aotearoa Leadership Tour Delegate Nosrat is very deserving of this prestigious award, and is to be congratulated on her success.
Another exciting piece of news is Ye Bin Lee Year 9 received
the highest mark in her Korean Examination which she studies externally, she also is participating in the Miryong Woncheon Yonex Korean Junior open International Challenge and we wish her all the best.
In the last week of term, 15 Year 10 students will be attending the PCYC Job Readiness Skills Course; during the 4 days, they will complete a barista and first aid course and be mentored by
Police Youth Case Managers and the PCYC Youth Workers. What an
exciting opportunity to work with members in the community and develop their skills for the working world.
These students: Nora El-Sayed Ahmed, Khyle Banares, Sheetal Burathoki, Ella Grace, Messisa Ho, Chloe Huang, Jessica Lee, Helen Mi and Mandy Ngo performed at Auburn West Public
School for their multicultural day, there dance routine was amazing and I am sure many of the girls from Auburn West will join the K-Pop club when they come to our school.
Students in Years 9 and 10 have received a subject requirement notification for next year, a sign out form and information about the new merit badge awards for 2019. Please read these and ensure you daughter has the right equipment and
requirements for next year. I would like to wish all the students and their families a safe
and enjoyable break and look forwards to seeing you all in 2019. Ms Leanne Jackman Relieving Deputy Principal

Years 11 and 12
It has been another productive year and we are
all working towards a well-deserved holiday. I would
like to especially congratulate Year 12, 2018 on the
completion of the Higher School Certificate and
outstanding HSC results. I hope that the girls all
achieved the results that they worked so hard
towards and are accepted into any future careers
that they had hoped to go into.
Year 11 students on the other hand have just
started the Higher School Certificate journey and
they will have completed one whole term of the
Year 12 course work this term including the
completion of the first of many assessment tasks.
I am aware that there are already a number of girls
who have received course non-completion warnings
(N-warnings) for their HSC courses. The satisfactory
completion of a course requires Principals to have
sufficient evidence that the student has:
• followed the course developed or
endorsed by NESA
• applied themselves with diligence
and sustained effort to the set tasks and
experiences provided in the course by the
school
• achieved some or all of the Course
outcomes.
Students may receive N-warnings for any of
the above three reasons. It is very important that
students work with their teachers to redeem these
warnings. All students are now aware of the
importance of attendance, completion of
assessment tasks and school work as well as
developing and maintaining resilience and a positive
attitude in their final year of school. They have been
a wonderful senior cohort so far. Please note that
we do not approve any holiday leave in senior
schooling and if there are any concerns about your
daughter please contact me as soon as possible.
I would also like to take this opportunity to
acknowledge the following students for reaching the
forth tier of our Positive Behaviour Reward initiative.
Their reward was a morning Tea with our principal
and receiving the Rose Gold Badge.
The Senior cohort would not be so marvelous
without their absolutely fabulous Year Advisers Ms
Garvey and Ms Bakhos Years 12 and 11 respectively
and Wellbeing Team that includes Ms Matta and Mr
Brackenbury. The year groups are truly lucky to
have such a caring and compassionate team looking
after them.
Finally, I wish you all a very peaceful,
relaxing and safe break. Merry Xmas and Happy
New Year!

2nd Annual Combined Schools and Fire Brigade Concert
This year the Auburn Girls High School concert bad was invited to perform with two other high
schools. On Friday, November 24, the AGHS Concert Band travelled to Jannali High School to rehearse
for the 2nd Annual Combined Schools and Fire Brigade Concert. The band has been practising several
times a week to learn 12 pieces for the concert.
We spent the day rehearsing with the concert bands from Jannali High School and Lucas Heights
Community School under the trusty baton of Mr. Ian Newham.
The concert was held on the Saturday evening, with a short rehearsal and BBQ beforehand. The
combined band played two sets before the NSW Fire and Rescue Band wowed us with their amazing
performance, accompanied by a precision marching drill team.
It was an incredible experience for the band and we look forward to participating again next year.

Careers Term 4 has been another busy one for Careers with some of the following results:
• 48 Year 12 students have already gained 84 early university offers through various schemes. Most of these offers were due to high academic results throughout Year 11 and the first half of Year 12, or through consistent
community and school leadership. We know there are many more rounds of offers to come and we look forward to hearing more in the coming months. • We developed a new partnership with Beacon Foundation this term, thanks to Ms McKenna. These programs collaborate with local employers to run a number of Work Readiness and Career Mentoring
workshops for students in Year 9, 10 and 11. This is an exciting opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of the
world of work and give an insight into potential careers in our local area. • Year 10 have successfully completed a week of work experience, with students hosted in a range of
occupations including Law, IT and Finance, Fire Service, Health, Teaching and Retail. Congratulations to all the girls who gained positive feedback from their host employers. This has been a wonderful opportunity to develop some key employment related skills, as well as to help make more informed career choices in the future. • A number of Year 11 students have stayed back
on a Tuesday afternoon for voluntary one-hour sessions to gain additional information about university pathways and processes. Many girls are already considering how they might maximise their chances of UAC offers next year, and ensuring they are well prepared. These information sessions will continue in 2019, with a
schedule published on the Careers noticeboard to help
decide which sessions to attend. • Some Year 7 and Year 9 students have participated in excursions to UNSW and WSU to gain early information about university – what it looks like, who attends and how do they get there. Thank you to all our university partners for their ongoing support.
Ms Heemi days. The first day was held at SAP and day two at
PEPSICO. The program provided opportunities for students to have career conversations with people in the
workforce and gain an insight into a ‘day in the life’ of some of the employees. The program had a broad focus on different roles available within the organisations, including programmers, managers, sales, legal, marketing, HR, finance, researchers, product developers
and digital engineers. Students thoroughly enjoyed the workshops and took home a goody bag. Financial Literacy Certificate 1 Twenty students from year 10 were given a rare opportunity to complete the Certificate 1 in Financial
Literacy Course. The girls showed dedication and maturity throughout the two days. Ms Ghamroui

Nosrat Fareha, above left, recently represented South Western Sydney at the State Debating

7E History On Wednesday the 31st October, 7E
completed a process called mummification. We did the mummification process on students. Mummification is a mummy that has been mummified. It is a process of embalming a deceived human or animal whose body is
preserved. 7E students worked into groups and nominated one of their peers to be mummified (don’t worry it wasn’t the real mummification
process.) 7E students worked very hard to be successful in their work of mummification.
Each group planned out their work and brought useful things along with them for their
group project. Some things were, the jars as a resemblance of the organs put in the jar. Jewellery were also brought to show the treasury. One group even made fake organs out of red paint, tissue and water.
Most groups used toilet paper rolls but
some even brought clothes and bandages along with them. We did the mummification process because we thought it would be fun to actually do something we are learning.
7E is learning all about Ancient Egypt and one part of it is the process of mummification! Reihaneh
Debating Wrap Sweet Semi-Final Success
It has been a busy year for all our debate teams. Both coaches have observed a rise in skill level across all of our debaters. A pleasing development has been many of our girls are now regularly ‘hitting the bells’ which means they are
speaking for the allocated times. In a HUGE first for Auburn Girls High School, our Year 7/8 and Year 10 teams both excelled and qualified for the semi-finals of the South West Sydney region. Both teams debated exceptionally well to make these finals and in both cases were very close to winning. Both Mr Bailey and Ms Rao are excited at the prospect of coaching them next year and watching their development.
In 2019 we plan to enter seven teams across four
competitions, which will be our largest debating squad ever. We will also be providing students the opportunity to enter more public speaking competitions, so please encourage your children to come and see either Mr Bailey or Ms Rao if they are interested.
The Year 10 team were, Nosrat Fareha, Aisheeya Haq, Zara Hanif and Isabelle Khammy, with reserves Doha Goreishi and Safiya Allameddine.
The Year 7/8 team were Hafsa Farooq, Roba Goreishi, Fatema Mansur, Lavangiah Karunakuran, Wasila Zeidan and Areeba Haq. (Above is a picture of all the girls who participated in debating
this year in some capacity.) Mr Bailey

Support Faculty What a wonderful year we have had with many achievements from our students. It has been
another exciting and busy year for the Support Unit Faculty.
During this year, students were involved in a range of activities, which assisted in development of
many skills such as decision-making, active listening, problem solving, learn to work with and for others, communication and management skills. On Monday 29th of October 16 students and five teachers from the Support Unit attended the three-day Vision Valley Camp at Vision Valley Rd, Arcadia NSW. The three days started with some competitive
games at the campsite. The group moved on to begin with flying fox and after some safety and a practice run, we began our fun. All students and
teachers showed bravery, and that was great to see how every student encouraged each other and shared tips on how to complete the challenge. The students explored through the camp’s activities such
as canoeing, waterslide archery, many elements which built and strengthened their individual skills and raised awareness of how we could have effective and efficient teamwork. The Camp ended with a great feeling of accomplishment as fears were overcome and comfort zones were challenged.
The Camp wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of Ms Sin, Mrs Clipsham, Ms Maroon, and Ms Rodríguezes. A special shout-out to all support teachers who gave up their time and assisted the students at the camp. Some Students from Years 9-12 have completed or up-dated their resumes and applied
online for part time or casual work. Great to hear feedback from students who have gained an interview or job offer. Students in senior classes had have another successful year with their work experience and travel training program. Every Tuesday students have participated and developed their employment
related skills through a retail and packing factory at AFFORD Ingleburn. This program is an excellent opportunity to develop students’ social, communication and teamwork skills and develop their independence. On Wednesday 7th & 14th of November we
hosted the Year 6 students transitioning into Year 7 in 2019. I would like to thank all our future parents who supported their girls and attended the
information session. I hope orientation day helped to make a difference to the big challenge students will face when they enter high school. Sadly, at the end of year, it is always a time
when we say farewell to a number of our students, some of whom have been with us for many years. To those leaving, I wish you a really happy future and if you ever have time, please do let us know how you are doing and if there is anything we can do to help you in the future, please just ask! For our students and their parents, I wish you a
very happy, safe and peaceful holiday; I hope you thoroughly enjoy your holiday and I look forward to welcoming you all back in the New Year, as we aim to make 2019 our best year yet! Ms A Saleh

Term 4 has been a busy term in Mathematics with many activities and opportunities for students
to showcase their mathematical skills.
Year 7 to 11 classes have been involved in a Money Smart incursion. Students enjoyed having the chance to role play and learn about Financial
Mathematics from a visiting expert. A number of students from Year 7 to Year 10 participated in the 2018 UNSW Global Assessments - ICAS Mathematics Competition. ICAS Assessments are designed to recognise and reward academic excellence. The assessments are based on the curricula for the relevant year.
Students are asked to demonstrate a deeper, integrated, and thorough level of learning.
Congratulations to Warisha Durrani, Hiba Maricar, Areeba Tauqeer (Year 7) and Kylie Le, Helen Mi, Barmen Wong (Year 8) for achieving a Credit, placing them in the top 35 percent in their division. Congratulations also to Amy Khoa (Year
8) and Catherine Do (Year 10) for each achieving a Merit in a very competitive and prestigious
competition. Below is a photo of students who
participated and achieved pleasing results.
Year 7, above, have been studying properties of geometrical shapes this term. The students have enjoyed comparing and summarising the characteristics of
triangles and quadrilaterals. Below are photos of 7MATA and 7MATE in action. On Friday the 23rd of November, 50 Year 10 students accompanied by Mrs Vij, Ms Nguyen and Mrs Fidanboy went on an educational excursion to the Ten Pin Bowling Centre in Lidcombe (see photos below). The day was
filled with exciting opportunities where students were able to apply what they learnt in class regarding angles and trigonometry in real life. Students were amazed how simple concepts such as weight, friction, speed and angle can be used to determine the desired path of the bowling
ball. To consolidate our educational journey, students were exposed to the various marketing strategies used in
our modern world such as percentages, sales, discounts and best buys. Students were allowed to examine various products available on the shelves in stores at Lidcombe Centre and by doing so, they were able to mentally calculate the sale prices.

On Tuesday the 11th of December, Year 8 had Numeracy Day. Students competed within
their teams and against other teams. It was a
day filled with working mathematically and problem solving. Below and right is a snapshot of students engaged in numeracy workshops. We are fortunate that at Auburn Girls High School all Year 7 to 12 students have access to Mathsonline. This term we have seen some outstanding achievement in Mathonline. I
encourage all students to make use of Mathsonline particularly to revise and consolidate their mathematics understanding over the school holidays. My staff and I wish all a peaceful and safe break. If you have any problems concerning your daughter’s progress, please do not hesitate

On Friday the 26th of October my Year 8
Turkish class went on a Turkish Cuisine
excursion to Sahara Restaurant at Parramatta.
Our class studied the topic of ‘Turkish Food’
during Term 3 was given a task to choose a
Turkish restaurant to visit. Each student came
up with a proposal and we decided on Sahara
due to its location and proximity to the station
and travel expenses.
We left our school at 10:30 am and
walked to Auburn station, then we walked to
Auburn Turkish bakery and bought a surprise
cake for one of our class friends as it was her
birthday. We caught the train to Lidcombe then
directly to Parramatta station as it was the
fastest route. We were all excited to get to the
restaurant as we were very hungry.
The owner of the restaurant introduced
himself to our class, and showed us around the
restaurant. He had already reserved our tables
and so we sat and patiently waited for the
food. Firstly, we received a platter with the
Turkish traditional bread and dips. Then the
main dish arrived, and with meet skewers, rice
and salad.
It was a lovely day out with My Turkish
class, Mrs Amr and Mrs Fidanboy. A day that
will always be remembered.

There is no doubt that technology has provided a new avenue for hurtful and intimidating situations.
In a world where friends are made with the click of a mouse, it's probably not surprising that relationships are
just as easily terminated. In fact, the New Oxford American Dictionary's word
of the year for 2009 was ‘unfriend'. Defined by Oxford University Press as: "to remove someone as a ‘friend' on a social networking site such as Facebook", the word's
popularity gives an insight into the volatile nature of many online friendships.
So, is unfriending just unfriendly, or is it cyberbullying? What if a group of school mates gang up and publicly unfriend your child all at once – does that
constitute bullying? And does the definition of cyberbullying really matter when your child feels hurt?
At a glance • Bullying that occurs online or via technology is called cyberbullying.
• Online relationships can be different to face-to-face relationships.
• Hurtful comments and embarrassing photos posted online are potentially there forever. • Solutions to cyberbullying need a whole
community approach, not just schools or parents working in isolation.
• Filters only block certain content and aren't a solution to cyberbullying. • Parents need to be aware of the technology their
kids are using, and learn to use it as well.
While schools are making it a priority to address cyberbullying (and good digital-citizenship) in their policies and curricula, the problem needs a whole
community approach. Solutions also need to involve social media outlets, cyber-bystanders, parents and the
government.
Parents have to be participants One of the world's leading experts on cyberbullying,
Professor Donna Cross, says the most important thing we parents can do is be involved and familiar with our kids' online lives. Because most cyberbullying happens in the
home, parents need to be aware of the technology that young people are using, so that they can be in that space
with them and look at the ways in which they are
engaging with their friends.
