Cork demand bottledFeasibiliTy studies are being

carried out by the Irish Port of Cork into construction of a second cruise ship terminal in Cobh to cater to expected visitation rises.

Upgrades to current facilities will be installed to accommodate larger vessels in the meantime.

Port authorities are aiming to berth passenger ships of all sizes at a dedicated facility rather than send them to nearby cargo ports.

Fifty-four ship visits are slated for 2014, including the new Royal Princess, bringing a combined 108,000 guests, with the port expecting this to grow to 75 calls per year over the next five years.

Two more TUI vesselsGerman line TUI Cruises has

ordered a fifth and sixth newbuild unit of its popular Mein Schiff series, to be named Mein Schiff 5 and Mein Schiff 6.

The line, which is a joint venture between Royal Caribbean Cruises and TUI AG, will take delivery of the new vessels in 2016 & 2017.

Both vessels will be built by STX Finland at its Turku yard, will feature 15 decks and will be sister ships to the already-delivered Mein Schiff 3 (CU 29 May) and the forthcoming Mein Schiff 4.

Shoretours to host seriesshoreTours.com.au has

expanded its services to host small groups on cruises with the launch of the Food and Wine Cruise Series 2015.

The Australian-based company, which designs independent and private excursions at Australian, New Zealand and South Pacific ports, will kick off the new product with two itineraries aboard Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas in Feb.

Director Hope Kramer said the move was “a continuation of why I started Shoretours”.

“There are so many wonderful Australian experiences that aren’t getting explored and I wanted to find a way to showcase the best of the region so people really feel like they are getting the best out of their time in port,” she said.

A 10-night Tasmanian cruise via Burnie, Hobart, Melbourne and Adelaide includes “chaperoned, exclusive and unique food and wine tasting adventures” at Hellyer’s Distillery, Adelaide

City Markets and a Mornington Peninsula farm.

An 11-night Queensland cruise via Newcastle, Cairns, Airlie Beach and Brisbane offers tours to the Hunter Valley, Kuranda Scenic Rail in the Daintree, and seafood sampling in the Whitsundays.

Numbers are limited to 16 pax on the Tasmanian cruise and 32 for Queensland, with both departures from Sydney.

Kramer, who grew up in Tasmania, said the new product was an ideal combination of Australians’ love of food, wine and travelling in style.

“Furthermore, a cruise ship is the ultimate designated driver,” she added.

Prices start at $2,875 per person – see www.shoretours.com.au.

Wine routes on seasmsc Cruises has launched a

new range of themed wine tasting cruises through the Western Med, departing from Genoa, Italy.

Priced from $664ppts, seven-night cruises depart 02 & 09 Nov aboard MSC Splendida, visiting Naples and Messina in Italy, Tunis, Barcelona and Marseille.

An extra departure on 14 Dec will swap the Italian ports of call with Rome and Palermo, Sicily.

Itineraries will include a shore excursion to a wine producer or cellar in Barcelona and beverage package onboard the ship.

Country songs on CCCcaPTain Cook Cruises will host

country music superstar Adam Harvey for a special one-off fundraising show on Sydney 2000 as part of a renewed partnership with the McGrath Foundation.

Scheduled for Sun 12 Oct, tickets for the show will also include a two-course lunch and drinks package & lucky door prize draws.

Harvey will perform a collection of his all-time greatest hits and tracks from his newest album, which hits shelves on 22 Aug.

Tickets purchased before 15 Sep are priced from $99 per adult, rising to $129 per adult after this date, and $69 per child aged 4-15.

All ticket proceeds over $50 will be donated to the McGrath Foundation for its work raising awareness about breast cancer & funding specialist nurses in communities across Australia.

Crystal fitness focusFiTness equipment provided

by Olympic Games equipment supplier Technogym will be added to Crystal Serenity as part of a renovation due to start on 09 Sep.

The Crystal Cruises vessel will also see a circuit training program added to complement the line’s new range of active shore options.

sanDy Beach Park on the Hawaiian island of Oahu has found itself a cool new mascot for its promotional endeavours.

Meet Kama the surfing pig, who confidently & competently rides three-foot high waves at Makapu’u Beach Park aboard his own surfboard.

Kama’s surfing ability was discovered after a particular instance where he accidentally fell into a swimming pool and surprised his adoptive family with a strong swimming ability.

Princess nurtures piano talent

syDney’s young musical talent recently received a gift of the arts from Princess Cruises, with the donation of a fully refurbished baby grand piano to a city school.

Recently restored after many years entertaining travellers onboard, the baby grand is now a feature at the High School of the Performing Arts in Newtown.

The piano was one of two given to the school after being replaced aboard Sun Princess this year.

One of the two now serves as a practice and audition piano, while the second provides a gluttony of quality spare piano parts.

During a visit to the school by Princess Cruises, student Neil Baker performed a mini Chopin concert to show the piano was still delivering a first-class sound.

“It’s nice to know that a piano that was being replaced on one of our ships is now helping a new generation of musicians to make their way towards bright futures in music,” Princess Cruises vice-president Australia & New Zealand Stuart Allison said.

Allison is pictured above during the visit with head music teacher Gemma Thomas, school principal Stephen Grey, student Neil Baker, and Meg Koffel, Princess Cruises.

ceo Alex de Waal has praised last week’s decision by P&O Cruises to base one of its new ships in the city (CU 05 Aug) from Sep 2016.

Pacific Eden will operate a series of departures from Cairns over two months, which de Waal says will bring a $4 million financial boost to the city’s economy.

P&O boss Ann Sherry said Cairns was perfectly located for voyages to PNG and the Solomon Islands.

conqueror Peter Hillary will again sail onboard Lindblad Expeditions as a guest lecturer next year after his first voyage quickly sold out.

Hillary, who himself has climbed Everest five times, will participate in a ‘Journey to Antarctica’ voyage departing 28 Jan & 07 Feb 2015.

Elsewhere, highly awarded author Barry Lopez will take part in an voyage to Arctic Svalbardon on 09 Jun 2015, speaking about his life of acclaimed literary work.

Other lecturers signed to speak as part of the Global Perspectives Speakers for the remainder of 2014 next year include author Jared Diamond, teacher Carol Kidu and explorer Lawrence Blair.

SeaDream YC in depthsmaller ports, bays and inlets

will be visited as part of the 2015 summer Mediterranean program from SeaDream Yacht Club.

According to the line, the new program aims to attract cruisers who have already visited larger ports frequented by larger liners.

In some cases, cruises will see visits to as many as nine ports in countries such as Croatia, Greece & Italy, staying overnight in many.

The season operated by the line’s two yachts SeaDream I and SeaDream II consists of 40 departures across the Med.
