While at the high school, she was theCamden Diocese’s “Teacher of theYear” in 2000, and a 2006 finalist forNew Jersey’s Non-Public SchoolTeacher of the Year.
Hartman is involved in variouschurch and community service organ-izations, and has mentored youngpeople in her role as a Catholic educa-tor, youth minister and advisor in theU.S. Congressional Award Medal pro-gram.
She has also served as adjunct pro-fessor at both Cumberland County
College and Montclair StateUniversity.
“I am grateful for the wonderfulopportunity to serve as principal ofChrist the King Regional School andlook forward to embracing the respon-sibilities as its educational leader formany years to come,” Hartman said, adding that “it will be a real blessing towork with such a dedicated faculty andstaff and to partner with them and oursupportive caring parents in providing aquality faith-infused education for eachand every child entrusted to ourCatholic school.”
New principals at three schools(continued from page S5)
By T. S. Evans
On Jan. 5, 2010 Wildwood CatholicHigh School received notice from theCamden Diocese that it would be clos-ing at the end of the school year. Thatdecision motivated community mem-bers, alumni and parents to take action, and the efforts have been paying off.
Their fund raising efforts had thatdecision reversed within months andthe school is now operating with sur-plus funds.
A year after the plan to close wasannounced, enrollment was at an alltime low of 133. Enrollment increasedto 156 the following February.
This year the incoming freshmanclass is expected to be over 40 students— a small group but a significantincrease over the the 28 freshman lastSeptember. Total enrollment is expect-ed to be 163 students.
“I’m very happy that all the hardwork is paying off in enrollment andfinancial help from the local communi-ty,” Father Joseph D. Wallace, presidentof the school, said.
To get that boost in enrollmentAnthony Degatano, the Dean ofAcademics, and Kevin Quinn, advancement director, have been visit-ing local elementary schools to spreadthe word.
Wildwood Catholic administratorsare proud of the turnaround, and eager-ly point to the success of their students, including the ample scholarship moneythey earn.
The International Program will bring12-15 students from Europe and Asia.Quinn says they are a great boost bothculturally and academically to the stu-dent population. The foreign studentshave a great command of the Englishlanguage and are excellent writers. They also gain a lot from theirAmerican counterparts.
Administrators say WCHS maintainsa high standard, offering college prepa-ration courses that are interesting andchallenging. In addition to the advancedplacement program (AP), two courseswill now be offered from Seton Hall andKean University; that is, Real WorldTechnology from Seton Hall andEnvironmental Sustainability fromKean. WCHS is only one of threeschools in the state that is offering thelatter course. Both courses will beaccepted as transfer credits at any col-lege.
Students can also participate in 10athletic programs for girls and nine forboys, plus forensics, drama, music, stu-dent council, numerous clubs and theschool newspaper and yearbook. TheCrusaders have won awards in various
Wildwood Catholic starts new year in good healthcompetitions and these programs areoffered to the students in all four years.
Quinn said, “We are trying to help thestudents to continue their educationwith traditional academics plus lifeskills. We are an alternative to publiceducation in southern New Jersey – atuition charging school – so we mustprove we are better. Adding 40 to 45students may not look like much but wehave a lot to offer.”
Said Degatano, “We have encouragedstudents to visit and shadow our stu-
dents for a day. The new innovative pro-grams are getting the attention of thecommunity. The professional seminarsof law, medicine, research and writing, coupled with the college courses fromKean and Seton Hall, are reaping posi-tive reactions.”
“As a school, we must realize that inorder to grow and maintain the interestand loyalty of the community we must bebetter than any neighboring public school. In terms of tuition, we must be $7,000better than any other school,” he said.
