SSP shows EVERYSpeech Soundin the English
languageand EVERY
Spelling VariationThis covers all but around 55 words in the WHOLE of the English Language.
Get Onboard !
SSP is the only program worldwide that exposes children to the whole of the English
alphabetic code within their first two years of school, and is used as an early intervention to prevent reading and spelling difficulties. Those using SSP pledge to do everything possible to ensure that every child enters year 2 reading
and spelling with confidence.
Useful wall posters to print and laminate, plus info about SSP
We are listening to speech sounds and taking a picture of the speech sound.
The pictures of speech sounds are not always the same and children using SSP know that from term 1.
A child might hear ‘sss’ in a word and take a picture in their mind, and SSP helps them work out which one eg
c – cent. SSP is an inquiry based approach as well as one in
which there is explicit , systematic and direct teaching (through the initial levels)
Say the word (grass)
Listen for the speech sounds
____ _____ _____ _____
1 2 3 4Imagine you are taking a picture of each of the4 speech sounds with your speech sound camera– what might each one look like? Which sound shall we choose?
g gg r assc
s?
The children imagine they are taking pictures of the 4 speech sounds, and choosesound pics (representations) When you talk about letters these are simply lettersof the alphabet – and also have their own name. So, yes, this is an ‘es’ but what speech sound is it a picture of? It’s one (there are 8 or 9) of the pictures for the speech sound ‘ssss’
We guide them to 1 hear the smaller parts2 work out their order
3 make choices using the clouds4 Look at the ‘King’ way (the right way)
and look at which he chose for the speech sound pics (the pictures of the speech sounds we heard)
5 Write the King way out 7 times if you have time(helps the brain store this new learning, or further reinforce it)
Yes, they could memorise ‘grass’ but their brain will miss out on all this code discovery and learning ! Plus, our brains can only memorise
around 2000 words as whole words.Learn the 150 or so speech sound pics and that’s it!
All your choices covered.Because SSP children read early, they can also recognise
when the word ‘looks right’ and start to understand the codeeg they will very quickly tell you that ‘ss’ is not going to be a choice if the
speech sound is at the beginning of the word…
This is why children are reading and spelling with confidence before the end of their Prep Year, using SSP
SSP breaks it down into specific skills
PA
Phonics
Fluency and comprehension
Verbal Intelligence developed at all times in a range of ways. Story telling, book sharing, rhyming, active listening, role play and more.
Children won’tunderstand skillsif they can’t hearthe speech sounds
Every Child Regularly Monitored
Every Prep child is screened for poor phonemic awareness within the first few weeks of term 1 (1 minute test), every child is monitored to check progress at every level (4-5 minute test), and assessment tools are used to check reading and spelling skills of new children in
order to plan accordingly (4-5 minutes).Tests are quick and easy, and can be conducted by TAs, to allow teachers to TEACH.
Working smarter, not harder!
At all times, from term 1 of Prep, those using SSP try to see sound pics in words, and encourage children to do the same. This really helps to shape their reading AND spelling brains and prevent
difficulties. It also allows teachers to see where there are gaps in PA and code knowledge. Use every opportunity to do this !

To develop exceptional spelling (encoding) skills we need tostart from SPEECH. If children cannot hear the smaller parts
in words (phonemic awareness) they will not be able to develop these skills. They need to SEE words as made up of
speech sound pics (pictures of the speech sounds, not letters)
Interesting, varied decoding and reading material provided
Children learn to ‘see’ the Speech Sound Pics in words. This helps their reading and spelling skills
Children learn that speech sounds can be represented by ‘speech sound pics’™.
This shows the explicit teaching order (Green, Purple, Yellow, Blue) however children also use the clouds even from the Green Level
Teachers adapt
them for classroom

the
code
When all four levels have been covered teachers go through each cloud, to ensure that no
spelling variations have been missed.
Within Prep and Year 1 children will have been taught the WHOLE of the English code, and be able to use all 150 or so speech sound pics™
within decoding and encoding activities.
Reading for MEANING can happenfar earlier for most children, in addition to
a positive approach to reading and spelling, and higher levels of
self-confidence.
Being able to SEE the code helps most children with reading and spelling, even if they aren’t learning every speech sound pic for that speech sound
yet

perfect play toy out group touch August
I play with my puppy, he loves it so muchHe’s wriggly, he licks me, he’s silky to touch. He’s perfect when out with just me, or a group…He tugs on my toys, and runs round in a loopIn November when cold, or August when hotHe just wants to play, he just doesn’t stop!
Even if you’re 8 and far too old for songs and rhymes the clouds really HELP with spelling ! Please display all on walls, and ideally
let every child have their own copy.
All Speech Sounds in the English Language have a Speech Sound Cloud™.
These have been developed by the Reading Whisperer and offered to you for free, for non-commercial use
(Please let me know if Ive missed any !)

All of the pieces fit into place for each child when we take the SSP Approach
Although all children are being taught all 5 elements, SSP allows teachers to identify which children need more time, different resources etc to make sure that each piece fits. Even though all children need the same skill set, their ability to find each piece and use it correctly may be different. If we leave it until even term 2 of Prep many
can already have decided they don’t like this puzzle, and don’t want to play anymore. Its not a fun game.
So YES they need a fantastic phonics program, but FIRST they need good PA. ‘ PREVENTION is key within SSP ‘ !!
