Tulsa Children’s Museum (TCM) offers science,

technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and

Health & Wellness educational programs for your field

trip, classroom, after-school program, or other group.

Based on local and national education standards,

programs are educator-friendly and can be delivered

to meet your specific classroom or curriculum needs.

All programs are led by experienced educators and

designed around process skills frameworks, including

communication and collaboration, creativity and

innovation, and problem solving and critical thinking.

TCM’s curricula is designed to complement Oklahoma

Academic Standards and introduce elementary age

children to fun, hands-on learning while engaging in

the practices of inquiry and experimentation.

Any TCM class can be delivered at Discovery Lab in

conjunction with a study trip or group visit or as an

outreach program. Classes are one hour in length

(except for Brain, Body, Balance [B3] classes for Pre-K

& Kindergarten) and are designed to accommodate a

Animal Adventure Code : 1998 Cost per class : $100

Children have fun learning yoga-inspired animal moves and playing games on an imaginary trek through the jungle. Resting after their long hike introduces students to self-calming techniques.

Balancing Acts Code : 1999 Cost per class : $100

Children develop not just their physical balance skills but discover inner balance as well, learning to recognize the messages from their body and act on them to maintain steady energy and feel less chaotic physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Bee Moves Code : 2007 Cost per class : $100

Children explore their own five senses through actively learning about honeybees. Through dancing, sniffing scents, and buzzing, students create a bee colony and learn to work together as a hive.

Brain Integration Code : 1994 Cost per class : $100

Students explore their right and left brain hemispheres and learn how integration is the key to wholeness. Perfect for emerging readers, this classes uses cross-lateral movements and exercises that cross the body’s midline to strengthen and connect both halves of the brain for optimal learning.

Students explore the physics and geometry of a bubble and experiment with the properties and formation of bubbles.

Science of Shapes Code : 0044 Cost per class : $125

Students will find and discuss polygons in the environment and architecture. They will explore different polygons using different building materials.

Slime Code : 0012 Cost per class : $125

Students learn the states of matter and create a Non-Newtonian substance. They explore the texture, elasticity, and consistency of their slime by conducting a series of tests.

Sound Science Code : 0048 Cost per class : $100

Students learn about vibration through sight, sound, and touch. They create a working instrument out of recycled materials.

Up, Up, & Away Code : 0050 Cost per class: $100

Students will learn about air pressure and how it affects objects around us. They will explore the flying ability of different materials and construct their own simple flying machine.

Tiny Science Code : 0049 Cost per class : $100

Students learn about tiny (nano) science. They use their sense of hearing to listen better and their sense of smell to explore scent molecules that are too small to see.

Happy Healthy Hearts Code : 2001 Cost per class : $100

Children learn the location and function of their heart and how to keep it healthy through movement, eating well, and staying calm. Students move and play to find their pulse, pack a healthy picnic for an imaginary boat trip, and use deep breathing to find calm.

Rainbow Food Code : 2008 Cost per class : $100

Children discuss their favorite foods and the importance of eating a rainbow diet by incorporating multi-colored food into their meals. Students will learn about natural versus artificial foods and flavors and how different ingredients affect their bodies. By making a lunchbox art project and putting together healthy meals as a class, students take active steps towards making healthier food choices and sharing that information with their families.

Students will explore how light waves interact and reflect. Students will build a working kaleidoscope from recyclable materials.

Design a sculpture that moves. Students explore balance and kinetic energy to create a unique piece of art.

Students will learn what can be made from recycled plastic. They will have an understanding of how plastics are recycled and what happens when we don’t recycle.

Shape Shifting Code : 0045 Cost per class : $125

Students will find and discuss polygons in the environment and architecture. They will explore different polygons using various building materials transforming them from one dimensional shapes to three dimensional shapes.

Students explore the principles of aerodynamics and learn about the four forces of flight. They use these principles to create their own flying machines.

Students design blades to be tested on a wind turbine. They discover how the angle of the blade affects the speed of the turbine.

Students learn how simple machines can make life easier. They design and create their own working simple machine.

Students explore the properties of a Non-Newtonian substance using starch and water creating glowing Oobleck.

Students will explore electromagnetism by learning how light waves interact and reflect. Students will build a working kaleidoscope from recyclable materials.

Bridges Code : 0020 Cost per class : $125

Students learn about the four types of bridges and how the design plays a part in the strength of bridges. They test the stability of their bridge by seeing how much weight it can hold.

Simple Machines Code : 0024 Cost per class : $100

Discover how simple machines can make life easier. Learn how the six simple machines work and how they have changed the lives of humans. Design and construct your own working simple machine.

Canister Rockets Code : 0011 Cost per class : $125

Students will get up close and personal with Sir Isaac Newton’s Third Law of motion while they explore the properties of chemical reactions and pressure through the use of sodium bicarbonate and water. Testing various fuels, students will draw a conclusion as to which provides the largest reaction.

Pipelines Code : 0027 Cost per class : $125

Children investigate how liquids are transferred using a pipeline. Working in small groups, they design, build, test, and revise their own pipeline using simple, everyday materials. They learn how viscosity and gravity affects the transfer of liquids.

Wind Play Code : 0025 Cost per class : $125

Students design blades to be tested on a wind turbine. Using a volt meter, students test how much air their blades produce.

Students will explore the concepts of inertia, drag and lift while creating just the right sail for their car. They will then test their cars using both a ramp and wind power. Students will then have the opportunity to make adjustments to increase the speed of their car.

This class gives children a foundation of balance to help navigate the many changes as they head into their teenage years.

Children learn the location and function of their heart and how to keep it healthy through movement, eating well, and staying calm. Students move and play to find their pulse, create their own healthy meal plan, and use breath and calming techniques to develop a personal routine for reducing stress.

Move, Play, Regulate! Code : 1997 Cost per class : $100

This class introduces students to TCM’s health and wellness curriculum. Children study simple anatomy, move through poses, play games, and learn breath practices to self-regulate through energizing and calming.

Rainbow Food Code : 2008 Cost per class : $100

This class gives students tools to choose healthy, multi-colored foods over sugary, processed, and artificial foods. By learning the science of how sugar, fats, proteins, and carbohydrates affect the body, students will design a healthy menu that leaves them with a new awareness of how to identify and incorporate healthy food into their diet.

This one-hour class is designed to inspire older students to be warriors of peace, giving them tools to create a solid foundation as they head into their teenage years. Classes are all male or all female and center around themes particular to each group such as physical health and nutrition, body image, school and family stress, relationships, peer pressure, focus and discipline, handling strong emotions, and establishing values. Students explore athletes, celebrities, and others who are using movement and meditation to improve their lives to inspire their own movement, meditation, and relaxation throughout class. After finding peace within themselves, students enact a small-scale service project to spread peace into their community.

DISCOVERY LAB ACADEMY OVERVIEW

Discovery Lab Academy is the STEM and Health & Wellness, referred to as B3 (Brain, Body, Balance), curriculum series offered by Discovery Lab. Though our Academy program, we offer 8-week in-school or out-of -school class series to partner schools or groups. Each series consists of eight one-hour classes and series can be delivered in single or multiple units to complete a semester or a support a specific educational objective. Our STEM curriculum is designed for grades K – 6 and B3 (Brain, Body, Balance) for grades PreK – 6.

All Academy classes are built around Discovery Lab’s Play2Learn philosophy featuring informal, meaningful play to supplement classroom curriculum and are delivered by experienced museum educators.

B3 (Brain, Body, Balance) provides in-school and out-of-school health & wellness programs to promote physical, mental, emotional, and social health and well-being.

Each lesson includes movement, play, and self-regulation techniques to address current educational issues such as executive functioning, social interaction, emotional intelligence, anxiety, focus, and discipline. When children are given a chance to learn and practice these skills in a playful, nurturing environment, they create a foundation for life-long academic and personal success.
