Silkworms live for only two or three days after layingeggs. About 36,000 to 50,000 eggs are laid, and these arecarefully stored at the silkyworm farm until they are

ready to hatch. The eggs hatch into caterpillars, whichfeed on mulberry leaves. Soon, the caterpillars are readyto spin their cocoons. Not all caterpillars can spin silkcocoons. Only the caterpillars of a silkworm mothknown as Bombyxmori can do such spinning.

These caterpillars has special glands with secrete liquidsilk through its lower lips. The liquid produced after

later hardens to form fine strands. The caterpillarsmakes its cocoons using these strands. The threads onthe outside of the cocoons are rough, while those insideare soft and smooth.

Some fully-spun cocoons are heated. This kills the pupainside. The cocoons are then put into hot water to loosenthe fine threads. Finally, these threads are reeled off the

cocoons. The length of unbroken thread produced by a single cocoonmeasures about one-and-a half kilometers. Being twistedtogether several of these threads make single woven

    materials.

    1. How do the caterpillars grow?

    2. How do they produce the silk threads?3. How the farmers make a woven material?

It is interesting to know how the roads were built, which some of them are still in use today. First, the

Romans builders would clear the ground of rocks andtrees. Then they dug a trench where the road was to goand filled it with big stones. Next, they put in bigstones, pebbles, cement and sand which they packeddown to make a firm base. After that, they addedanother layer of cement mixed with broken tiles. Ontop of that rough construction, then they put paving

stones to make the flat surface. These stones were cut sothat they fitted together tightly. As the finishing touch, kerb stones were put at each sides of the road to hold inthe paving stones. It was also used to make a channel

for the water to run away.

This short explanation on how a cell phone work is reallywonderful. A cell phone or in long term "cellular telephone'works by transmitting signals of radio to towers of cellular.

The towers are networked to a central switching station. Theconnection usually uses wire, fiber optic-cables, ormicrowave.

Then the central switching station which handles calls in

certain given area is directed connected to the wire-basedtelephone system. Cellulars are pick up by the towers andrelayed to another cellular telephone user or the user of

    wire-based telephone network.

the towers vary in the capacity and capability to receivesignals. Some can receive the signal from short distance andthe others can receive more distance. However, there areusually more than one tower in certain given area so that the

system can handle the increasing telephone traffic.
