English Language Learning in Chile

The Spanish Language in the US
Latino students are the largest growing ethnic minority
in US public schools with documented Hispanics now
comprising almost 20% of public school enrollment
(ED, 2006). However, approximately 85% of all
elementary and secondary
teachers are European
American (Bureau of Labor
Statistics, 2008), and the majority
are monolingual (NEA, 2003).
Goals for Universidad Mayor
• Increased opportunities for English language learning for teacher candidates for more effective teaching of English in Chilean schools
• Increased opportunities for English language learning for faculty for more effective teaching and professional development
• Desire to provide professional development opportunities for practicing teachers who partner with the university
Goals for the Childhood Education
Department at Buffalo State
• Increased opportunities for teacher candidates to expand global awareness for more effective teaching of diverse groups of students in US public schools
• Develop partnerships with Universidad Mayor to promote Spanish language learning for teacher candidates and faculty
International PDS • Creation of an international Professional
Development School partnership to support the
development of teacher candidates, teachers,
school leaders, children, and university faculty in
Santiago and Buffalo

Teaching
• Co-teaching a course on curriculum theory and
practice in the English Education Department
Professional Development
• Offering seminars to provide professional development opportunities for the teacher candidates and faculty of the English Education Department at the Santiago and Temuco campuses as well as for
practicing teachers

Mentoring
• Developing a mentor program whereby upper
division students practice English language and
pedagogical skills while providing support and

• Begin portfolio development in the first year with
common course assignments used as artifacts
• A mechanism to align the curriculum and revisit
program expectations
Global Book Project
• Establishing the Global Book Project to promote English language literacy and global awareness for both teacher candidates and children at Escuela Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna, Numero 25

• The Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange is a direct one-to-one
exchange of approximately 120 teachers from primary and
secondary schools. The program operates between the United States

• The Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching Program sends U.S.
teachers abroad and brings international teachers to the United
States for a semester to pursue individual projects, conduct research,
