LECTURE SERIES 1

Muslim Women in Contemporary Times

Lecturer: Dr. Monia Mazigh Days: Mondays, September 14th - October 26th (No class October 12th) Time: 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.Location: Room 124, Leeds House Building

This lecture series is an introduction to contemporary issues related to Muslim women. Through a board range of fiction and non-fiction books, articles, and videos, we will explore the question of women in Islam. We will avoid the trap of easy media representation or sensationalism centered on the orientalist discourse of passive Muslim women in need to be saved. Instead, a more nuanced and multidimensional approach to tackle some of the issues affecting Muslim women will be explored. Issues such as veiling, polygamy, Islamic traditions, as well as Islamic feminism will be discussed.

Lectures, discussions, film clips, readings

Cost: $130.00 (HST included) Enrollment capacity: 55 participants Note: This series is a repeat of Women and Islam, offered in Fall 2014.

LECTURE SERIES 2

Exploring America Through Regional Fiction:

20th-Century Classics Lecturer: Stefani NielsonDays: Mondays, September 14th - October 26th (No class October 12th) Time: 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.Location: Room 124, Leeds House Building

The U.S. contains many smaller “countries” within its broad borders that are home to unique voices, customs, behaviours and histories as well as landscapes. Explore how masters and mistresses of the modern novel and short story use physical landscape to explain the emotional geography of their characters, passing critical yet loving eyes on the people and places giving America’s regions life. Beginning with the cool climate of the Northeast, we will move to the gothic Southeast, the pragmatic Midwest, the punishing Plains, the history-laden South, and finally to the “promised land” of the West.

LECTURE SERIES 3

Gut-Brain Ecology Lecturer: Dr. Sarah Musavi Days: Tuesdays, September 15th - October 20th Time: 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.Location: Room 124, Leeds House Building

What makes you unique apart from your looks? Would you believe that there is tremendous diversity in the human genome and that we are only 10% similar to each other in genetic terms? The difference comes in the form of the microbial populations in our bodies. How we think, eat, move and where we live changes us 90%. In this lecture series, we will explore how our gut is at the centre of our microbial setup, how the nervous system affects it, and how chronic problems can be simplified by improving the gut ecology. You will learn how to take your health in your own hands with simple steps to changing your gut ecology.

Brains, Minds, and Theories of Human Nature

Lecturer: Dr. Sterling Lynch Days: Tuesdays, September 15th - October 20th Time: 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.Location: Room 124, Leeds House Building

Illuminating new discoveries in neuroscience and psychology have, in recent years, revolutionized our understanding of brains, minds, and human nature. In this lecture series, we will examine the implications of some of these new and important discoveries from a philosophical perspective, drawing on some of the most influential accounts of human nature in Western philosophy. Bridging the present and the past, students will be introduced to the ideas, thinkers, and science that will help them formulate a coherent philosophical answer to the question “who am I?”

LECTURE SERIES 5

The Neuropsychology of Memory and Vision

Lecturer: Dr. Peter Fried Days: Wednesdays, September 16th - October 21st Time: 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.Location: Room 124, Leeds House Building

Memories are fluid, mental reconstructions where the original input is modified as it enters our storage and then is contorted during retrieval according to our brain’s current emotions, expectancies, past experiences, and beliefs. Similarly, visual perception is a dynamic process shaped by current events, expectancies, and biases, so that the visual images/perceptions we “see” are based on numerous assumptions that are the product of our brain rather than our eyes. The theme of the present series of lectures will be on how the brain constructs our memories and visual perception.

Four Leaders that Made Russia Lecturer: Oksana DrozdovaDays: Wednesdays, September 16th - October 21stTime: 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Location: Room 124, Leeds House Building

Forever torn between East and West, and indeed buffering the two, Russia combines immense ethnic diversity and expansive geography. Russia’s colourful and vivid history combines socialism and capitalism, Christianity and Islam, western innovation and oriental tradition. Blending these diverse currents was always a challenge for the country’s leaders. Tsars, emperors, commissars, and presidents played a key role in Russia’s development as a state and as a world power. Who “opened” Russia to Europe? Who brought the country its greatest glory? And who was the cruelest Russian leader? These and other fascinating questions will be discussed in this lecture series.

According to Homer, Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae and the leader of the Greeks in the Trojan War, was the most powerful king in Bronze Age Greece.
