A Warm Welcome to Foundation Stage 1

at Hornbill School

Dear Parent,

A warm welcome to you and your child from the Foundation

Stage 1 (FS1) team at Hornbill School. We hope you had a

lovely summer break and are as excited about the year ahead

as we are!

We would like to thank you for taking part in our home visit

programme which gave us a fantastic opportunity to get to

know you and your child.

The strong FS1 team hosts a wealth of expertise and

experience which will benefit your child during their time with

us. When children first join us, they are encouraged to settle

into school and feel comfortable in their surroundings. During

this transition, and all year, the team make careful

observations of what your child needs to learn and deliver this

through fun, play– based activities that suit their needs and

interests.

Please find enclosed a number of general reminders and

information relating to FS1.

We look forward to a fruitful and exciting year!

Information about Foundation Stage 1

A few essential details and timings:

Physical Play

We take part in physical activities every day. This includes times in our outdoor

classroom and soft play area. We do not get the children changed for physical

play, so please note that they should come to school in clothing appropriate for

both outdoor and indoor activities. Shoes are especially important and we

request that children do not wear flip flops or crocs or shoes without backs as

accidents can occur during physical play time if children wear them.

Snacks and Drinks

We provide fruit and water on arrival for those children who feel that they need

something to eat and drink when they arrive. In addition to this, the children can

help themselves ( and are encouraged to do so ) to water at anytime of the day.

We also provide a healthy snack with milk or water during the FS1 session. We

request $35 per half term in order to provide this for your child. If you have any

questions regarding snacks please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Sun Lotion and Hats

As we encourage the children to learn through physical play the children will

usually take part in outdoor activities several times in a day. It is important that

your child has sun lotion applied prior to arriving at school. In addition to this we

teach sun safety and strongly encourage all children to wear a hat for all outdoor

play and activities. Spare clothing that your child brings to school can easily be

misplaced around our environment, so we ask that you kindly label all items with

your child’s name. Please keep personal property such as toys or books at home.

Library

We have our own Foundation Stage Library which the children will visit at least

once every week. Children can borrow one book at a time to share with you at home

and we ask that you return these books to school, in their book bags, so that they

can change them each week. Please check your child’s book bag for information

about their library day. The FS library is also open most days for you to change

books yourself if you please. It is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 0800

– 0815hrs.

Entering School

We would ask that when entering the school gates, if you are carrying an umbrella,

to put the umbrella down when walking within the school grounds. This will ensure

everyone’s safety. There have been some accidents involving umbrellas where others

have been hurt when bumped into with an open umbrella.

Helping in School

We would be delighted with any help, support or offer of your

talents on either a regular or occasional basis in the classroom. This

could be anything from sharing a story with the children or helping

with arts and crafts, as well as supporting the children to develop

their learning through playing at specific activities. Please let us

know if you would like to help as this would be very welcome.

Home Time

At 1115hrs, when our session ends, we have a routine that ensures all children leave

school feeling positive. We escort children who travel to the bus to the correct

busses and, as they board the bus, we always make sure we say ‘good bye’. For

children who walk to school, we settle the children so that they are sitting on a

carpeted area within their base class. We will then open the door and call each

child’s name as we see their adult, who will be queuing outside the classroom. This

system means that each child has an opportunity to say good bye and leave in a

safe and orderly manner. We ask for your patience as this system can mean that

you have to wait a few minutes while the children say ‘good bye’. Please refrain

from calling your child’s name as it can lead to confusion inside the room where

they may have been asked to do something by the Keyworkers or Teacher.

Keeping in Contact

If you have any questions or concerns at any time please do not hesitate to

contact us directly or via the school office. If we are unable to meet with you

straight away we will arrange a mutually convenient appointment. We are

available to talk on the phone or in person and a member of our Nepali staff will

be happy to translate during meetings for those Nepali parents who would prefer

to use their first language.

Thank you in anticipation of your support. We look forward to working with your

child and yourselves to ensure that school is a happy and fun place where your

child can reach their full potential and feel confident and happy.

During the first part of this term we will be supporting

children in their transition to their new classrooms. We will focus

on settling into routines using visual timetables and a consistent

approach through all FS1 classrooms. In addition to this, we will

provide opportunities for children to explore and discover the

values of sharing and turn taking. This term we will learn more

about ourselves and our families, our class and our community. The

children will enjoy learning Nursery Rhymes and favourite holiday

songs as well as expressing themselves through art work.

Term 1- 2016/ 2017

Term 2– 2016/ 2017

This term, in order to promote social development, we will focus

on working within a group. It is important that children acquire

co-operation skills as it helps them to ultimately become

collaborative, as well as independent, learners. The children will

also be helped and encouraged to attempt new activities and

experiences this term. Adults will work with the children in

promoting independence skills both with their learning and play -

selecting activities themselves and returning equipment once they

have finished. These will include a range of ICT equipment which

will add a new dimension to their play by enabling them to explore

the setting in a different way.

Page 9: Learning Phase 1 Curriculum Handbook

Page 9 Parents Handbook 2016 - 2017

The third term in school will be exciting as the children display

increasing independence in selecting and carrying out their choice

of activities. We will be working on enhancing child initiated

learning with a particular focus on the social skills of sharing and

turn taking. Together, they will develop their group interaction and

negotiation skills as they use the Foundation Stage learning

environment. In addition, they will learn some traditional tales and

be encouraged to use their language skills to identify with some of

the characters in the stories.

Term 3– 2016/ 2017

Stay & Play Sessions

and

Landing Pads

Stay and Play sessions are opportunities for you to join your child

in their classroom and play alongside them. This is a wonderful

opportunity to share in your child’s exciting learning journey!

Towards the end of each term you will be invited into class again

for a Landing Pad activity. During this session your child will talk

you through what they have accomplished and participate in a fun

theme–related activity with your child.

Aims of Hornbill School At Hornbill School we aim to:

Engage the hearts and minds of our children by offering every child

access to dynamic, enriched and inclusive curriculum which is inspiring and

relevant to the needs of our diverse community. Such a curriculum would

include all the requirements of the English National Curriculum and the

essential elements of the Nepalese National Curriculum for the Nepali

children.

Ensure learning and teaching is of a high quality and is planned and

managed so that every child is supported and challenged. In this way all

children are prepared with the essential tools for learning, giving them

the appropriate foundations for future success in life.

Work creatively with both local and global communities to ensure our

school continues to be a learning place where children and staff develop,

the curriculum continues to change and improve over time, and resources

are available flexibly and imaginatively.

Provide equality of opportunity for all so that learning can be

accessed by all children, whatever their background or

abilities, and within and beyond the classroom and school day.

Mission Statement

Our multicultural school promotes a happy, safe and caring

environment that is committed to helping all children experience

success, whatever their background or abilities, and to ensure

they achieve the highest standards in all they set out to do.

Safeguarding Children

At Hornbill School, the health, safety and well-being of every child is

our paramount concern. We listen to our pupils and take seriously

what they tell us. Our aim is that children will enjoy their time as

pupils in this school.

We want to work in partnership with you to help your child to achieve

their full potential and make a positive contribution.

On rare occasions our concern about a child may mean that we have to

consult other agencies even before we contact you. The procedures,

which we follow, have been laid down by Service Children's Education,

and the school has adopted a Child Protection Policy in line with this

for the safety of all. If you want to know more about our procedures

or the policy, please speak to the Headteacher or your child’s class

teacher

Do be honest and always tell the truth.

Do be kind, friendly and polite at all times, saying “please”, “thank you”,

“excuse me” and always using other people’s names.

Do listen carefully to the person whose turn it is to talk.

Do use your time well - it’ s too precious to waste either yours or others.

Do all you can to conserve resources, recycle them where possible.

Do work hard and try your best.

Do your work and let other people do theirs.

Do look after your things and other people’s property.
