Science
Light We will be investigating the way
that light travels, looking in
particular at the way light is
reflected from a variety of
surfaces, including mirrors. We will
also be exploring the way that
shadows are formed and designing
our own experiments to find out
what factors affect the size of the
shadow that is formed by
an object.
Humanities
History : Roman Britain
We continue to learn all about Roman Britain next
half-term. We will be exploring what happened when
the Romans invaded and how life changed for people
living in Britain afterwards. We will be looking at the
different challenges the Romans faced and investigating
some of their achievements. Throughout the unit, we will
be looking at a range of artefacts, ruins and historical
sources to help us with our thinking and learning.
RE : Special Places
We will be thinking about places that are special to us,
and then exploring mosques and churches and identifying
typical features of each.
Literacy
Next half-term we will be looking in depth at the narrative poem The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. Throughout our study of this piece, we will exploring the different features the poet uses and thinking about the reasons why he chose to put the text together in this way. We will also be exploring the effect that figurative language and descriptive vocabulary have in the poem, as well as examining its structure.
The unit will end with us producing our own narrative poem inspired by The Highwayman. We will also continue to complete Big Writing assignments every Friday, helping us to prepare to move up to Year 4/5.
The Arts
We will be completing the Roman Shields
which we have begun to construct this term,
customising them so that each class has its
own design. We will also be looking carefully
at different Roman weapons and then making
our own, all leading up to our planned Roman
battle re-enactment, involving all 3 classes on the field later in the term!
Next half-term, we’ll be learning about...
PE
Athletics
While Year 4 will continue to
develop their swimming skills
once a week, Year 3 will be
practising their athletic skills
as we prepare for this year’s
Sports Day.
Maths
Next half-term we will be looking at data handling, collecting our own data and creating a range of graphs and tables in order to answer questions and draw conclusions. We will also be revisiting properties of shape and applying our existing knowledge of different 2D and 3D shapes to problem solving activities. Linked to our topic, we will also be looking at and learning about Roman numerals. We will continue to practice our times table facts every day. Miss Davis’ group will be focussing on their 4x table, Mr Humber’s set will be working on the 8x table, while Mr Holgate’s class will be revising their 9x table.
Computing
We will be using Scratch to program our own simple computer games, learning how logical commands can be used to control characters & make them react to events - try it out at scratch.mit.edu.
CLASS 7 – JUNE 2016
Humanities
History : Roman Britain
Place the Romans on a timeline and place other periods we have
studied in order around this.
Ask questions to develop our understanding.
Understand historical concepts and terms such as civilisation, empire,
change etc.
Imagine what it was like to live in a different time period, recognising
both positive and negative differences.
Investigate the impact that the Roman Empire had on life in Britain.
Look carefully at objects, artefacts and images, and make suggestions
about life in the past based on our observations.
Identify reasons why the Roman Empire became so powerful.
Look for relics and remains of the Roman Empire in modern Britain.
RE : Special Places
Know the function of objects, places and people within religious
practices and lifestyles.
Recognise what influences us in our lives.
Begin to ask important questions about how religions and moral values
can influence behaviour.
Literacy Reading Identify and summarise the main ideas in a text, drawing ideas from more than one paragraph. Recognise and explain how language, structure and presentation contribute to meaning. Use dictionaries to check the meaning of words that we have read. Identify the use and effect of specialist vocabulary. Writing Create and develop settings, characters and plot. Experiment with a broad range of sentence structures, including questions, exclamations, speech and the use of subordinate clauses. Use language and style that are appropriate to the reader. Proof-read our work for grammar, spelling and punctuation errors. Grammar Use conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to express time and cause. Use fronted adverbials to describe how actions are being carried out.
The Arts
DT Use research to develop design criteria for innovative,
functional products that are fit for purpose.
Share our ideas through annotated sketches, diagrams
and prototypes. Select from and use a wide range of tools to perform
practical tasks (eg. cutting, shaping, joining and finishing).
Choose appropriate materials for a given task.
Evaluate our finished products against our design criteria
and identify ways in which our work could be improved.
Next half-term, we’ll be learning to...

Science
Light Recognise that we need light in order to see
things and that dark is the absence of light.
Investigate how light is reflected from
different surfaces.
Find patterns in the way shadows change.
Plants Identify and describe the functions of
different parts of flowering plants,
including roots, stems, leaves and flowers.
Discover the requirements of plants for life
and growth.
Recognise that environments can change
and that this can pose dangers to
living things.
Maths Identify and describe the properties of
common 2D shapes, including the number of sides and vertices.
Construct 2D and 3D shapes, including the use of nets for simple 3D shapes.
Interpret and present data using bar charts, pictograms and tables.
Understand and use simple scales in bar charts.
Solve one-step and two-step questions using information presented in bar charts, pictograms and tables.
Read and write Roman numerals to 100, and recognise that the number system has changed over time.
Quickly recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 x 12.
Computing
Design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals.
Solve problems by breaking them down into smaller parts. Evaluate and assess our work and the work of others. Use and combine a variety of software to design and
create a range of programs.
Year 3/4 – JUNE 2016
PE
Athletics
Use running, jumping, throwing and
catching in isolation and in
combination.
Evaluate our own performance and
identify ways in which it could be
improved.
Recognise the importance of warming
up before activity and begin to
develop our own warm-up activities.
