The International Relations Office (IRO) works with more than 300 partner universities in 50 countries around the world to send you on exciting international programmes. Our wide-ranging spectrum of international summer programmes (i-SP), internships (i-Intern), research attachments (i-RAP) and university network programmes provide stimulating opportunities to gain the skills required to be a future-ready graduate. Innovative programmes such as our Study Trips for Engagement and EnRichment (STEER), take students to emerging markets such as Latin America and the Middle East to explore, together with a faculty member, issues and themes associated with a particular region. During your undergraduate years, these programmes will hopefully provide the opportunity for you to experience student life in a foreign country, pick up a new language, experience different cultures, overcome novel challenges, make new friends and ultimately become global citizens! Peruse these pages to find out where you can go, what you can do, and how you can make informed choices regarding your study abroad options!

SEP is an opportunity for students to spend one or two semesters studying at a partner university; earning credits towards their NUS degree, while continuing to pay NUS tuition fees. SEP is a chance for students to experience a different academic culture, live in a foreign country and possibly learn a new language! Students can choose from more than 300 partner universities in 50 countries, either under a University-wide (across participating Faculties) or a Faculty-level (specific to a particular School or Faculty) Exchange arrangement.

ABOUT

STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMME (SEP)

Tang Jet Yang DanielNUS Business School, SEP to Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi, Italy

SEP is about strengthening the bonds we have with each other through the challenging moments and fun times, and rediscovering my Singaporean identity.

I am now more appreciative and proud of Singapore’s achievements.

My exchange has given me the most unique experience I could ask for. I’ve given Taiwan four months of my life, and in return, Taiwan has given me a suitcase of memories that will last a lifetime.

During my exchange to Duke University, I joined an Alternative Fall Break Program and went to Apopka, Florida for a service learning trip at Hope Community Center. Together with my fellow Duke students, we conducted a workshop for the immigrant women in the community. The inspiring and reflective experience will stay on with me for the rest of my life.

International Internships (i-Intern)

To prepare NUS students for the demands of an increasingly globalised economy and interconnected international community, IRO offers i-Intern for students to expand their knowledge and hone their skills in a cross-cultural workplace setting. Students are exposed to international best practices at the workplace and career development opportunities in diverse industries, companies and non-profit organisations. These programmes are generally held during the NUS vacation period from May to August and December to January. A longer internship for a full semester may be possible.

International Summer/Winter Programmes (i-SP)

NUS students can participate in i-SP offered by partner universities and global university networks of which NUS is a member. They allow students to explore and cultivate a deeper appreciation of the culture and lifestyle of the host country through opportunities for personal development and independent travel. Some i-SPs also allow students to explore non-traditional countries. These programmes are generally held during the NUS vacation period from May to August (summer) and December to January (winter).

The experiences, knowledge and skills gained from the STEER Kazakhstan programme have opened a gateway for me to the Central Asian region. STEER offers an abundance of career opportunities and the promise of exciting prospects. Undoubtedly, the entire programme has impacted me positively to pursue a career beyond Singapore and to be at the bridgehead forging business and economic links between the two.

I have actively encouraged some of my friends in Thailand to apply for the TF LEaRN Programme @ NUS so that they could experience the benefits of this programme. The programme has empowered me to go beyond my boundaries and allowed me to play a part in building the foundation for an integrated region of the future.

I really appreciate Temasek Foundation for giving me this opportunity to take part in the TF LEaRN programme. I have learned a lot from this out-of-classroom experience. After doing volunteer work in Shanghai, I realised how satisfying it is to think for and to help others, and hope to be more involved back in Singapore. I will definitely recommend this programme to my peers at NUS.

The Sino-Singapore Undergraduate Exchange (SSUE) Programme is a prestigious programme spearheaded by the respective Ministries of Education (MOE) of Singapore and China. It is the only G-G (Government to Government) Tertiary Exchange Programme between Singapore and China. The programme was initiated in 2002 by Singapore’s then Prime Minister Mr Goh Chok Tong to provide an avenue for cross cultural exchange between local university students and selected Chinese universities. The programme aims to instil Singaporean students with a global perspective and an enhanced understanding of China and its potential. It also exposes students from China to various aspects of Singaporean life, education and culture. The programme consists of two legs – the first in China (May), followed by Singapore (July).

The SSUE programme has benefitted me in various platforms. It was my personal decision to befriend the people we met on this trip, scale relational hardships and brave novel food and adventures - that made the trip really meaningful to me. If you enjoy actively forging new friendships and have any interest in China, this programme will give you all the opportunities that you can ever wish for.

I took a lot of writing classes at Yale expecting to write Western stories like everyone else, but ended up talking about Singapore at every chance I got. My professors and classmates enjoyed my sharing and I'm glad that I was able to show them new ways of seeing the world just as they widened my own horizons. FINANCIAL AID

FINANCING YOUR INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMES

FINANCING YOUR SEPSEP is a great opportunity for students to experience studying in an overseas university without worrying about additional tuition fees of overseas partner institutions. During SEP, students continue to pay NUS tuition fees, but apart from this, students must ensure that they have the financial means for other expenses like airfare and living costs during their SEP abroad. Students should consider the affordability of various SEP destinations when planning their exchange semester(s), as the cost of living varies from cities to cities.

To help students alleviate the financial burden of participating in SEP, a number of financial assistance schemes are available for students to apply.

The NUS International Relations Office (IRO) fosters partnerships with premier institutions around the world

to enhance NUS’ standing as a world-class institution. In tandem with NUS’ vision of becoming a leading global

university centred in Asia, IRO (established in 1996) has developed meaningful international engagements with

many peer institutions and fostered interactions and collaborations in education, research and technology that benefit our students, staff and stakeholders. Our partners are higher education leaders from all over the world, with

whom we share international standards and best practices in order to foster a sustained culture of excellence on our own campus. Besides the Student Exchange Programme (SEP), IRO also works with NUS faculties and schools on

other overseas attachments, including International Summer Programmes (i-SP), International Internships (i-Intern), and

International Research Attachment Programmes (i-RAP).
