Antiquing & Finishes Bob Park

Bob will demonstrate the methods he uses to produce the finishes he’s known for. Instruction will include: preparing the leather, application of dyes, oiling, application of Fiebing’s antique paste, final finishes and the tools used for the various applications. Bobby will also discuss/demonstrate other products used for antique finishes and final top coats for comparison purposes. Open Q & A at the end of the demonstration (time permitting). You’ll begin your day carving and stamping some designs of your choice on swatches of belt leather. Al has many designs from which to choose, from beginner to very ambitious! You will be able to do more than one! Antiquing and blacking the background is covered next, followed by instruction on lining your belts with pigskin or 3 oz. strap leather (with opportunity to add decorative cuts to the strap leather, too!). “BearMan” Techniques: Realistic Leaves Ed Labarre

Ed will focus on how to tool realistic, natural looking leaves – how to get the leaves to stand out and be the focus of the design. The proper use of thumbprints, pear shaders and petal lifters will be examined. You will explore how to apply the vein structure and stems on the leaves and touch on getting the depth of tooling to make the leaves stand out. Leather donated by Hermann Oak Leather Co.Materials to Bring: Maul/mallet, an assortment of bevelers, pear shaders and thumbprints, P206, P208, P367 (or similar), 2 styluses (for drawing veins), petal lifters, background tools, swivel knife, strop and a stamping surface.

Border Designs Bob Park

Bobby will discuss the use of borders in conjunction with western floral tooling. Discussion will include various border styles, such as implied borders, cut borders, bead borders, geometric borders and complex borders, as well as layout, spacing, corner treatments and tooling sequences. Students will have the opportunity to practice using the border tools of their choice under Bobby’s supervision in the afternoon session. Open Q & A at the end of class (time permitting). Materials to Bring: Your favorite border tools or any stamp that you would like assistance with, along with stamping tools, dividers, ruler, stylus and a stamping surface.

Braiding Personal Training Ron Titus

Whether you’re just starting out, or you’ve been at this for years, Ron’s decades of braiding, lacing and knot tying experience will bring your skills to a whole new level. Gaps or loose ends in your lacing? Trying to master a new knot? Have a special project that requires braiding? If you need help, Ron can help you learn how to do it yourself! Leather or rawhide, bring in your projects or just sit down with Ron and ask away. From quirts and reatas, reins to bosals, walking stick grips to hatbands, Ron will work with you until you “get it”! Ron will gladly converse with you about preparing rawhide as well.Materials to Bring: Awl (can be purchased from Ron), any projects you have questions about, notepaper, pencil, camera and questions! Several types of rawhide will be available. All students under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

In this workshop/demonstration the student will be introduced to the various methods utilized to produce professional quality edges. The demonstration will include the Weaver Burnisher, the Fantastic Burnisher, various rotary burnishers and burnishing by hand. Examples of the various stages being demonstrated will be provided to the students. Additional topics will include dying edges and various methods for final finishing. If you want to learn to produce beautifully finished edges, this workshop is a must! Open Q & A at the end of the demonstration (time permitting). All skill levels welcome. This workshop will get your swivel knife closely acquainted with your stamping tools! You’ll learn how to do a “folded” ribbon border as well as a “twisted” ribbon border. These designs are the perfect accents for many projects and can easily be adapted to many border shapes. You’ll be able to try a new tool designed specifically for these borders, as well as learn to make them with the tools you already own. Dress up your projects and give them a more polished look with these decorative accents! All skill levels welcome. Special tools will be available for loan or purchase during or after the workshop. The goal for this class is to provide the student with the knowledge and confidence to take chap/chink orders, take proper measurements, select suitable leather, and do layout, cutting and construction. Creating Western Floral Designs Bob Park

This workshop is designed as an introduction to drawing floral tooling patterns utilizing the techniques outlined in Bob’s book, Creating Western Floral Designs. Bob will outline a step-by-step, mechanical approach to drawing patterns which is intended to assist those who have difficulty with the design process. Topics covered will include the anatomy of a pattern, basic layout, the use of borders, placement of flowers and stem work and the use of various design elements, which are typically found in western floral designs. You will practice the techniques covered under Bob’s direction in the afternoon. Copies of Creating Western Floral Designs will be available in class or ahead of time. Demystifying the Stitcher Chris Andre

If you have ever been stumped by your sewing machine, are the proud owner of a new stitcher, or are planning on purchasing a stitcher, this workshop is for you. Chris “Slickbald” Andre will cover setting up a Class 4 Cobra machine (or similar), finding “home”, tension and thread weights, and go over the accessories as well. Many applications will be demonstrated. Questions are encouraged and students will have the opportunity to practice with the stitchers on hand. Embellished Dog Collar Becky Jacobs

A workshop for beginners! Humans should not be the only ones wearing leather goods. Join Becky and have some fun making a beautiful dog collar or harness. Becky will take you through every step from cutting the leather, design, coloring/antiquing, top coating and finishing the edges for a professional look. Crystals will be provided for embellishments, if desired. She will have samples on hand. You will need to measure your pet’s neck to determine the collar’s length. If you want to do a harness, please contact Becky before February 19 at 909-915-7219 or email: [email protected]. Beginner Tandy kits with a basic tool set will be for sale if you need them. Leather donated by Wickett & Craig of America.Materials to Bring: Paper, pencil, ruler and *sharp* shears. If you own them, bring: a swivel knife and strop, basic stamping tools, maul, an alphabet set, and any tools you may have for punching holes or slits. European-Style Square Billfold Kathy Flanagan

This two-day workshop will reveal the art behind making a stylish European-style square billfold. Day 1 will cover the tooling of a Sheridan style pattern on the exterior, while Day 2 will address the interior lining assembly. You’ll take the project home to finish as you like (laquer/stain/edge). This liner style is different from a Roper wallet. Materials donated by: Hermann Oak Leather Co, Wickett & Craig of America, Fiebing’s, Bee Natural Leather Care and Renia USA.Materials to Bring: Swivel knife, strop, ruler, mallet, straight edge, stylus, wing dividers, cutting board, stamping surface, pencil and paper.

Floral Pattern Layout Al Gould

Discover floral pattern layout, combined with geometric and basket stamping. Learn how to draw patterns that show symmetry and balance, and properly lay out basic patterns. Further instruction involving basic pattern components (flowers, buds, leaves, stems and fillers) will open up inexhaustible possibilities for pattern layout. Stone inlay and figure carving are what this workshop is all about. The subject will be a large scarab beetle, gently lifted into full 3-D, and inlaid with a beautiful stone for special effect. Bob will take you through each step from pattern transfer to carving and lifting, to inlaying of the stone and coloring. Finally, you’ll be given tips on finishing this project for presentation/framing. In this workshop we will each build a strop that will work for your particular needs. It will be one of two styles – either a handheld strop or a bench strop. The handheld strop will be 2” wide x 30” long (or shorter, depending on your particular needs). The bench strop will be approximately 3” wide x 15” long. After we build the strop, I will demonstrate the most effective way to use it with a variety of edged tools. During Bob’s 53 years as a saddle maker he has made saddle bags of all sizes and shapes. Here, the student will build and take home a medium sized pair with an accordion-style gusset. Bob will explain styles, materials and construction methods as well as the methods of attaching saddle bags to a saddle. Patterns will be supplied, student will lay out, cut, stamp, rivet, sew, edge, oil and polish the pair that they make. Time will only permit a simple border stamp (bring a favorite). You will do some dye mixing and learn theory behind creating interesting colors and designs. Blending, shading, & fading techniques will be discussed and applied. Learn the fundamental principles and techniques of how to put a consistently sharp cutting edge on virtually all of your leather craft cutting tools. We will start by defining the cutting edge and how to achieve the best cutting edge possible. Then we will briefly cover the most effective sharpening media. Afterwards we will spend a considerable amount of time putting an edge on your round knife, swivel knife, skiver, pocket knife, draw gauge blade, trim knife, splitter blade, etc. The idea is for you to develop the skills to effectively and efficiently sharpen your various leathercraft knives and get a consistently sharp cutting edge. This workshop is designed for the leathercrafter that uses and wants sharp cutting tools and will be catered to any skill level – novice to master. We will be covering a lot of information in a short period of time with the goal of having your tools sharpened better than they have been done before. Western Gun Rigs: Design & Construction Chris Andre

Learn the fundamentals of professional holster design and construction. This class will focus on Western holsters for Cowboy Action Shooting with the student designing and making two holster styles of their choosing. This class will cover the fitting of the holster (style) to the customer, types of holsters and their applications, as well as designing holsters from scratch. In construction we will cover when to use and how to install a welt seam, a full liner, and wet molding. The class will also cover shop tips and production techniques to help the student hit the ground running. This class it intended to take the intermediate leather worker to the next level, and is not intended for beginning leather crafters. INSTRUCTORSChris AndreChris “Slickbald” Andre is an award winning, professional leather artist and maker in Frederick, Colorado. Chris works mostly in cowboy action and concealed carry gun leather while dabbling in saddles, cowboy trappings and motorcycle gear. Chris is also an active and competitive member of SASS and Cowboy Fast Draw, and is a lifetime competitive shooter, and USMC Marksmanship Instructor. Chris authors a variety of instruction and pattern packs for gun leather and other items as well as offering private classes in holster making and carving.

Robert BeardRobert owns Pro Series Tool Company in Farmington, New Mexico, where he specializes in designing and crafting custom leather tools. He is a world-renowned carver, instructor and toolmaker and has been a leather artist for over forty years. Robert spends much of his time on the road, teaching leather art to students in the U.S., Canada and overseas. He was awarded the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft in 1987 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.

Bob BrennerBob has been a full-time saddle maker for 35+ years, after spending ten years in the banking industry. With a degree in Business Administration, majoring in accounting and finance, Bob published the book “How to Establish Prices for the Saddle Maker or Leather Worker”. This book is based on the day to day accounting and pricing practices in his shop. As a founder and Executive Director of the American Saddle Makers Association, he is the editor and lead author of ASMA’s GREEN BOOK guide to pricing, the “How Do I Make That?” book series, Western Saddle Fit, and others.

Kathy FlanaganKathy has been working with leather for four decades, beginning in 1970, in 4-H, learning from masters of the craft. In 2005, the International Federation of Leather Guilds awarded Kathy the “Best of Advanced” division and “People’s Choice” honors. Later, in 2009, the IFoLG awarded Kathy the “Pathway to Masters” award for her continuous efforts and willingness to teach in the field of leathercraft.

INSTRUCTORSAl GouldAl is a custom saddle maker and leather artist, having made saddles since 1960. Horses and cattle have been a large part of his life with experience in – and not limited to – high country packing mules and cow punching. Al is also a gold card member of Pro-Rodeo. He has taught a variety of workshops at numerous past shows and enjoys sharing as much of his hard-earned knowledge as possible. He was awarded the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft in 2009.

Bob KlendaBob has been carving leather since 1959 and making saddles since 1962. As past president of the Colorado Saddle Makers Association, as well as being one of its founders, he is accustomed to teaching saddle making and leather carving at its seminars as well as for 4-H and in his own saddle shop. Bob is primarily self-taught and is eager to share his knowledge with others. He is a recipient of the Howard Munsell Award for promotion of the art of saddle making, and in 2010 he received the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft.

Barry KingFrom his first leather project as a third grader to an artist in his own right, Barry King has remained true to the Sheridan style of carving. Though the majority of his time is spent developing and perfect-ing tools to carve and stamp leather, Barry, the 1994 Ann Stohlman Youth Award recipient and owner of Barry King Tools in Sheridan, Wyoming, still finds time to put his own leather tools to work.

Becky JacobsBecky is a leather artist and designer, bead worker and equine equipment designer. She started out doing leatherwork in junior high school. In 1981, she found a Tandy leather store in San Bernardino, CA, and took a couple of classes. Then, in 1997, Becky started to breed and show paint horses, which led to the making of horse equipment such as halters, headstalls with beading and Turks head knots. Becky has also started making purses with cow hide and exotic leathers of ostrich and croco-dile. She also enjoys making hand beaded leather belts. In her free time, Becky teaches braiding and lacing at her local Tandy Leather Store.

Paul KrauseAdd together 25 years of boot and shoe repair, five years of leather goods manufacturing, and 13 years of custom leather/boot making (gratefully all married to the same woman), and you have Paul’s life. With a 21st century life motto like “Bringing Something New in the World Through Creative Service”, he is enthusiastic about using his skills as a leather worker to serve the needs of those who make requests. From his 19th century location in Prescott, Arizona, he is beginning to recognize and implement the value of passing along what he has learned. Paul is happy to welcome all who share the love of leather and things related.

Ed LaBarreEd ”BearMan” LaBarre’s first connection with leather was in 1967 at age 13, in the leathercraft shop at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. He later worked at McLelland’s Saddle Shop in Florida and learned from Bob Dellis, who encouraged Ed to make tools. His son, Beary, now runs BearMauls. INSTRUCTORSErik LittleErik is a retired deputy sheriff and Marine Corps combat veteran. During his sheriff’s service, fellow SWAT officers convinced Erik to build holsters. In 2005, he retired and began making holsters full-time under the name Rafter-L Combat Leather. Erik credits Bruce Nelson (Bruce Nelson Combat Leather) for his guidance, support, and basic pattern design. Erik’s work has been featured in American Handgunner, Shooting Illustrated, SWAT, and many others. He is a member of the American Pistolsmiths Guild and a holster judge for the World leather debut in Sheridan, Wyoming. Paul ZalesakPaul Zalesak, founding president of Leather Wranglers, Inc., began tooling leather in 1974 in El Paso, Texas, under the tutelage of Jim Resley. A leather artist, knife maker, and expert in metallurgy, Paul also loves to teach basic swivel knife use and sharpening techniques. He is vice president of the International Internet Leathercrafters’ Guild, and is a member of the New Mexico Roadrunner Leather Artisans’ Guild, the Colorado Saddle Makers Association and the Lone Star Leather Crafters Guild.

Ron TitusRon has worked all over the West - in California, Washington, Arizona and Wyoming - on many ranches where he picked up and mastered the art of braiding. A long-time teacher of the trade, he has also studied under master braiders. He now gives private lessons at his ranch, teaching others his craft of braiding and knot tying in leather and rawhide.

Bob ParkBobby began tooling leather as a youngster in Arizona where he was greatly influenced by the cow-boy lifestyle. Specializing in western floral tooling, Bobby has developed a unique look in the tradition of the western style. His products sell throughout the U.S. and Europe and have won numerous awards at various shows and exhibitions. In 2011, he received the “Best of the Masters” award at the International Federation of Leather Guilds convention. Most recently, he received the “Bootstrap Award” at the 2012 Trappings of the American West exhibition for his contribution toward the ad-vancement of the art. Bobby so far has authored one widely acclaimed book entitled Creating Floral Designs.
