Very Rev. Thomas P. Acklin, O.S.B.

grams, and have garnered many insights intohow to improve our programs further.

Our strategic planning continues, and hereis a brief synopsis of our plansfor the future:

• Mission:Mission:Mission:Mission:Mission: The Seminary’sprimary mission is the prepa-ration of candidates for thepriesthood. At the same timewe have recommitted our-selves to preparation of laypersons for ministry and ofmen for the permanentdiaconate. We have also re-newed our commitment tocontinuing education forclergy at Saint Vincent Semi-nary and in local dioceses.

grated well in our community life and is one ofour strengths. This ethnic diversity recommitsus to maintaining our strong hispanic ministryprogram as many more dioceses are recog-

nizing the need for priestswho can exercise hispanicministry.

• Staffing: Staffing: Staffing: Staffing: Staffing: The planningprocess will allow us to besensitive to staffing needs. As the student body hasgrown we have filled aneed for a full-time vicerector and a full-time deanof students. Both of thesepositions were filled by onepart-time person not toomany years ago.

• Facilities:Facilities:Facilities:Facilities:Facilities: The Semi-nary is part of a campus-

(Continued From Page 1)

Our summer school continuesto grow, and we are reas-sessing it in an ongoing wayto further avail our resourcesto lay students and seminar-ians.

• Enrollment: Enrollment: Enrollment: Enrollment: Enrollment: We have been exceptionallysuccessful at recruitment. Enrollment is at a 35-year high. For the first time we have a studentfrom the Diocese of Savannah, and from threenew abbeys, St. Martin in Lacey, Washing-ton; St. Bede’s in Peru, Illinois and Ealing Ab-bey in London. We will persist in our recruit-ment efforts, but we will be sure not to loseour personal approach and strong Seminarycommunity.

As a result of increasing enrollment and thegrowing number of dioceses sending to SaintVincent Seminary, we continue to be more di-versified, culturally and ethnically, and we aredeeply enriched by that. This richness is inte-

wide effort to develop amaster plan for the entireSaint Vincent Community.

We will study facilityneeds, including student housing, office, din-ing and classroom space, and make sure wehave adequate facilities for the Seminary. Thisplan should be completed in 1999. With re-gard to facilities and programs, we are veryfortunate that we share facilities, as well asprograms, with the College.

• Spiritual: Spiritual: Spiritual: Spiritual: Spiritual: Our spiritual life program andother parts of our programs were rated highlyby the Bishop’s Committee, and we plan toreinforce this strength.

• Faculty: Faculty: Faculty: Faculty: Faculty: Saint Vincent Seminary was in-vited to be a part of the Keystone Project, sup-ported by the Lilly Foundation and other chari-table groups. This will fund a faculty projectto enhance not only the teaching process, butalso to focus on the learning process and al-low us to explore ways to enhance what takesplace in the classroom, using different peda-gogy as well as the latest developments in com-munications technology.

• Endowment:Endowment:Endowment:Endowment:Endowment: We recently completed con-struction of a new chapel and the expansionand renovation of the Elizabeth J. RoderickCenter, comprised of Seminary offices, studenthousing and guest accommodations. Addition-ally, as part of this capital campaign, we in-creased scholarship endowment. We need toexpand our endowment to raise additionalfunds for scholarships, for faculty enrichmentand to support our library’s excellent theologi-cal collection. In the future we will providemore information about our plans to endowthe Seminary more adequately.

Father Thomas P. Acklin, O.S.B., SeminaryRector, and Sister Cecilia Murphy, R.S.M.,recently attended a meeting in Indianapolis inpreparation for the Keystone Project, to en-hance seminary teaching and learning. SaintVincent is among 20 seminaries invited to takepart. During the project the faculty will deter-mine an issue involving teaching/learning onwhich it wishes to work for the next threeyears. Additional meetings are planned forFebruary 4 and April 15, followed by aweeklong session in Colorado June 27-July 1.Grants of $2,500 for initial planning effortsand $15,000 to implement the proposal wereawarded to the Seminary.

Archabbot Douglas, members of the Board of Regents,Family and friends of Father Demetrius,

Beloved Guest of Honor.

In the twenty-fourth and final chapter of his masterpiece, the evangelist Luke gives a story

which we call simply, “The road to Emmaus.”

Two disciples — unfortunately going in the wrong direction —are joined by the stranger

who “opens their minds to understand the Scriptures.”

Looking back on that incident, they later say to one another,

“Did not our hearts burn within uswhile he talked with us on the way,

and opened up the Scriptures?”

How many of us here this eveninghave made similar comments

after leaving one of your classes, Father Demetrius!

Oh yes, there were those countless pieces of stimulating information.

Heroes: like Lagrange and de Vaux,Benoit and Bea,

Moses and especially David;

Breakthroughs: like Divino Afflante Spirituand Vatican Council Two;

Methods: like Text or Form or Redaction Criticism.

But, there was so much more than simply information.

There were those wonderful insights, those clever asides

deftly delivered with that shy smile, which were such an inspiration,

and which set our hearts on fire. . . .

Yes, you have long been recognized as an exceptional exegete.More than thirty years ago,

you were already asked to contribute to the Jerome BiblicalCommentary

which was composed by“the best of English-speaking Catholic exegetes.”

That alone should tell youhow esteemed you are among your peers.

But to us,who had the privilege of knowing you as

teacher,it’s been the Vision,

the Perspective,the Outlook-on-life,

which has been so valuable to us over the years.

Forty years later,as I — as so many of us —

recall your Scripture lessons,

I dare say they have so often sustained usin our challenging moments of ministry

because they were always positive, alwayshopeful.

You have always encouraged us —and by “us” I mean not only your fellow Benedictines,

but countless parish priests like myself, and numerous religious sisters and laity across this country —

to be motivated by that Positive Perspectivewhich you drew in large part

from the very nature of the Scriptures, but alsofrom the spirit of the Vatican Council,

from being raised in a large, loving, trusting family, and, I suspect, from your natural disposition.

“Are you doing any writing now?” someone may ask.“Oh, presently I’m working on two books,” you would answer.

. . . not one . . . but two!That’s Father Demetrius Dumm . . .

There was little time in your lectures for the negative. We were not a Church under siege, you would remind us.

We were a Church on the march!

To the tired, the timid, the discouraged, you would simply say,

“Get out of yourselves.Stop talking about the heat,

and the dust,and the dryness.

Open your eyes and look at those Flowers in this Desert!”

That’s not information, Father Demetrius.That’s a whole biblical approach to life. . . .

I think it has sustainedmany a grey-haired — dare I say — old person

in our gathering here this evening.

I think I can speak for all of them, when I say,

we are, and will forever be, grateful.

Thank you.

logical and historical topics. His works havebeen published in Slovak, English, Italian andGerman.

He was born in Udavske, in the Diocese ofKosice, Slovakia, and has enjoyed a close as-sociation with the American Slovak commu-nity over the past nearly four decades.

The Cardinal commended Saint VincentArchabbey for its work in preserving and pro-moting Slovak culture in the United States, andthe Seminary for training young Slovak menfor the priesthood.

In his homily he discussed the mission of theChurch, which had its origins in Christ, a mis-sion grounded in God’s love for all humanityand intended for all. The Church’s mission,Cardinal Tomko said, is a continuation of thatof Christ. The mandate of that mission, he said,is to “go out to all nations, preaching andteaching them, baptizing them, and formingthem into a church.”

The Church then, must show its apostolic na-ture and preach the Good News, living outthe command of Christ as an action of God

Mrs. Mary Ann Johanek, National President of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Associa-tion, explained in announcing the fund, “The Benedictine monks from Saint Vincent estab-lished churches and schools, founded new religious communities, helped newly arrived Slo-vak immigrants with their physical and spiritual needs, taught the Slovak language andeducated generations of priests to pass on the Catholic faith.” In recognition of this signifi-cant role that the Saint Vincent Benedictine community has played in Slovak-Americanculture, the First Catholic Slovak Ladies established this fund to support the educationalworks of Saint Vincent Seminary. Father Rene Kollar, O.S.B., professor of history in theCollege and Seminary, in his work, Saint Vincent Archabbey and Its Role in the Develop-ment of Slovak-American Culture and History, noted “Through its educational programs inthe College and Seminary, Saint Vincent provided opportunities for Slovak-Americanseverywhere to enter the mainstream of American Society.”

The Sväté Písmo i Katolícka Viera Education Fund (Sacred Scripture and the CatholicFaith) at Saint Vincent Seminary will provide financial assistance for student scholarshipsand for faculty development as well as for maintaining the Sacred Sciences collection atthe library. The essence of what seminarians study at Saint Vincent is Sacred Scripture(Sväté Písmo) and the spreading of the Catholic faith (Katolícka Viera) is the mission towhich they will commit themselves as priests.

This endowment fund is both a timeless gift of thanksgiving and a commitment to futuregenerations. “We invite you to be a part of the future with Saint Vincent Seminary and itsmission of educating future priests who are men of prayer and pastoral sensitivity,” Mrs.Johanek said.

If you wish to accept this invitation and make a gift to the Sväté Písmo i Katolícka VieraEducation Fund, please use the enclosed envelope and note the purpose.

working in and through the Church, its bish-ops, priests, religious and laity.

He spoke of recent violence against mission-aries, recalling the dictum “From the blood ofmartyrs grows the seed of faith.” The violence, however, is only one face of mission, and“there are many happy stories of hundreds ofmen and women joyfully serving the Church infar-flung areas of the world,” Cardinal Tomkosaid.

“But today,” he said, “I would offer anothervision of this heavenly apotheosis, the visionof the Blessed Trinity,’ surrounded by thosesame myriads of angels and saints, but hereaccompanied also by so many hundreds ofthousands of missionary priests, religious andlaity, whose preaching and example have ledso many to faith and salvation in Jesus Christ. It is a vision of heaven filled with people ofevery nation and tongue and ethnic back-ground, all united in and by the love of Godwhich is at the very heart of mission. This is ourorigin, this is our purpose; this is the mandatewe have received and which we are dailycalled to fulfill. . . . This is mission today. Let usstrive to proclaim this salvation and power ofthe reign of our God and the authority of hisAnointed One.”

“Reflecting on the traditions of SaintVincent, we need to acknowledge the impor-tant role of faculty members in shaping futurepriests. Today, we celebrate Father Demetriusand his nearly 50 years of dedicated serviceto the Seminary. At the Board of Regentsmeeting we decided to establish an endowmentin biblical studies in his honor. The monies fromthis endowment will advance the academic andspiritual preparation of students for the priest-hood through student scholarships and facultyenrichment in biblical studies as well as enhanc-ing the Sacred Scripture collection at the li-brary. We will be inviting the financial partici-pation of Seminary alumni and friends in thisendeavor.“

Saint Vincent Seminary’s enrollment contin-ues to grow, with a total of 108 students en-rolled for the fall semester. That figure includes95 students in the ordination program, ofwhich ten are pre-theology I students, sevenare pre-theology II students, 22 are in first the-ology, 28 in second theology, 18 in third the-ology and 10 in fourth theology. There areeight non-ordination students in the master ofarts degree program, one in the master of di-vinity degree program, four in the master ofreligious education degree program and onecontinuing education student.

To put things in perspective, Father ThomasP. Acklin, Seminary Rector, noted that in 1990there were just 38 ordination students at theSeminary, including 22 diocesan students. Thisyear there are 78 diocesan students and 16Benedictines.

A CARA study on Seminary enrollment, using figures for 1997-98, put Saint Vincenton the verge of breaking into the top ten larg-est seminaries nationwide. That figure also in-cludes formation programs abroad sponsoredby the hierarchy of the United States, such asthe North American College in Rome and theAmerican College in Louvain, Belgium. Basedon last year’s figures Saint Vincent was tiedfor 11th place with Oregon’s Mount AngelSeminary, with 84 ordination students. Thelargest seminary by enrollment last year wasMundelein Seminary in Illinois, with 187 ordi-nation students.

The study still showed a decrease in semi-nary enrollment over the past 30 years, someof which can be attributed to a decrease information programs at the high school andcollege levels. The CARA report noted thatthe Church has developed other models, in-cluding pre-theology programs, to form priest-hood candidates.
