Rector’s Message

Very Rev. Thomas P. Acklin, O.S.B.

I had the privilege of beginning early the celebration of the new millennium and the Jubilee Year by making a pilgrimage to Rome in December. Father Justin Matro, O.S.B., Director of Spiritual Life at Saint Vincent Seminary, defended with highest honors his doctoral dissertation entitled “Christian Suffer-ing in the Spiritual Writings of Adrienne Von Speyr.” We visited the Vatican Congrega-tion for Education where we received the news that the Seminary has once again been authorized to grant the Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree. We also visited Francis Cardinal Arinze who heads the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue and who will be visiting Saint Vincent Archabbey and Seminary between April 29 and May 1, 2000. Perhaps the highlight of our visit was an opportunity to concelebrate Mass with Pope John Paul II. In the Papal apartments as well as in the Curia offices, I was impressed with the simplicity and faith with which these dedicated people live and work.

Back in Latrobe we recently welcomed Rev. Monsignor Paul A. Lenz to return as a member of the Board of Regents and welcomed as new members Most Rev. Bernard W. Schmitt, Bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, West Virginia, and Mr. Mark F. Garcea from Virginia Beach, Virginia. At my request, I am most grateful that Father Kurt J. Belsole, O.S.B., has been appointed by Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., Chancellor of

Diocese of Pittsburgh Auxiliary Bishop John B. McDowell, a graduate of Saint Vincent Seminary, became the first author to write a book on the late Bishop Hugh C. Boyle, also a Saint Vincent graduate, who headed the diocese from 1921 until his death in 1950 at age 77 — the longest tenure of any bishop in the lengthy history of the diocese.

The defining moment in Bishop Boyle’s life came with the Johnstown flood of 1889, when he lost his father and seven brothers and sister. Just his mother and one brother survived.

During his 29 years as bishop he confirmed more than 500,000 children and ordained 623 priests.

“Water, Death and Grace,” a 100-page softcover book is available at Kirner’s, 219 Fourth Ave., Pittsburgh.

Saint Vincent Seminary, to assist me in the growing administrative responsibilities of the Seminary so that together, we can continue to maintain a strong presence within the Seminary community, as well as to maintain a good relationship and communication with the various dioceses whom we serve.

As we cross the threshold into this millennium and begin the Jubilee Year 2000, we certainly do so with great strength and faith. Our Seminary is strong and we have been blessed with much growth, but especially a deepening sense of our mission and service to the Church. With the advent of our website we are hoping to extend our message to the broadest possible audience and to be in touch with people during this millennium in ways we could never have imagined. Above all, the meaning of the Jubilee Year gives us great hope that all which has kept us in any type of bondage may be transformed into a new freedom so that the Church may be renewed by rededicated shepherds and faithful ministers.

authorized the affiliation with the Dominican House. “Saint Vincent Seminary received very high commendations from the bishops who send students here,” said Very Rev. Thomas P. Acklin, O.S.B., Seminary Rector, who received the news during a recent visit to Rome. He explained that the credentials of the Seminary faculty and course offerings are studied during the Congregation for Education’s review of the petition, in addition to inquiries made of bishops who send students to the Seminary.

Although the degree is a “Bachelor in Sacred Theology,” this is not to be confused with the undergraduate bachelor’s degrees offered at colleges and universities, Father Thomas explained. “The S.T.B. will prepare students for ordination to the priesthood as well as further study in pontifical universities.” The degree is recognized internationally and therefore enables students to enter graduate programs in pontifical universities in Europe and throughout the world.

new Basilica spires and the blessing of the new baptismal font.

Cardinal Arinze is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Pontifical Council for the Laity. He is one of the five cardinals on the presiding council of the Holy Father’s central coordination committee for the Great Jubilee Year 2000.

Born in 1932 in Nigeria, Cardinal Arinze was baptized a Catholic at age 9, and entered the seminary at age 13. He was ordained a priest in 1958, a bishop in 1965 and a cardinal in 1985.

Following the civil war in Nigeria, which ended in 1970, he, as archbishop and later as President of the Nigerian Council of Bishops, was a major contributor to the mobilization

of the native clergy, religious and laity. He led the evangelization movement in Nigeria, which doubled the number of Catholics in the country in less than 14 years. By the time he was called to serve in Rome in April of 1984, 66 percent of the population in his Archdiocese was Catholic, in comparison to the Nigerian national average of 11 percent.

As an experienced leader in the Church and a man rooted in the Nigerian background, he understands the spiritual attack on the family, the importance of the Eucharist, the potential impact of a growing seminary, and the art of evangelization. He is also a leading televi-sion personality in the United States and throughout the world.

Most Rev. Nicholas C. Dattilo, Bishop of the Harrisburg Diocese, was the keynote speaker at Saint Vincent Seminary’s Annual Alumni Day banquet.

Msgr. Jules Roos, a Pittsburgh diocesan priest who has served the poor of Chimbote, Peru for 36 years was honored as a Saint Vincent Alumnus of Distinction by the Saint Vincent Alumni Association on October 26, 1999. Msgr. Roos, a 1952 graduate of Saint Vincent College and a 1956 graduate of Saint Vincent Seminary, is the executive director of The Social Work Center in Chimbote.

The Center began many years ago in one room, but now consists of a maternity hospital, outpatient clinic and clinical laboratory, with a number of social service, special studies and foreign service programs. From January through June of this year, the Center handled a total of 100,313 cases, including 1,539 babies delivered. The patient treatment statistics from 1966 through 1998 show that 3,014,028 individuals have been served. Once a thriving fishing port 250 miles north of Lima, Chimbote attracted a great number of unemployed persons looking for work. Atmospheric condi-

tions decimated the fish population, and natural disasters, ranging from a 1970 earthquake to floods in the early 1980s have created very poor living conditions, and resulted in a 70 percent unemployment rate. Many people live in straw shacks without benefit of water, electricity or sewerage.

The poverty of this region and its substan-dard living conditions, causes malnutrition, dehydration, tuberculosis, premature delivery of newborns, and high risk newborns. In addition to treating these and other medical problems, the Center is also focused on meeting the moral and spiritual needs of the people it serves and on providing maternal and child care programs. In presenting the award, Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., the Chancellor of Saint Vincent Seminary, said that “Monsignor Roos has served the poorest of the poor for most of his priestly ministry. His care and service to those whom he has been called to serve has
