The Yellow Ribbon Program is a student driven organization that educates the school community about suicide awareness and prevention. This year the Yellow Ribbon members worked on fundraising to buy yellow ribbon cards. The cards are given to students to provide information on the signs of depression and suicide. In addition, the cards encourage those thinking about suicide to reach out for help and has a number to contacts for sup-port. The students sold cookies over Christmas, designed suicide prevention bracelets and held a school dance to raise money.

Throughout the past school year, the three journalism students have been quite busy. Taking pictures at the multiple events throughout the year—like homecoming and snow week—have kept us preoccupied. Kara Benolken, Bridget Col-lins, and I have been busy plugging away at the last yearbook for Le Center High School. Present at many different school events, the three of us have taken the initiative to make sure all the usual components are incorporated into the yearbook. Class faces, organizations, faculty, sports, and the senior pages are just a few of the different parts we have been working on. Along with the yearbook, we have also pub-lished multiple editions of The Wildcat Tales, the school newspaper. Printing these editions monthly

at the beginning of the year, and taking a break towards the middle, due to lack of staff, we plan on finishing with a senior edition in the month of May. Unfortunately the journalism class was an independent study this year, due to scheduling difficulties, leaving the three of us taking this class instead of study hall. We have accomplished a lot this year and hope to produce an outstanding yearbook. I would like to thank the local businesses for their advertisements at the beginning of the year. It is greatly appreciated! I also would like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Harmeyer for heading up this class. She has been a wonderful help this year assisting with completing and making sure the yearbook gets done on time!

The Minnesota State High School Mathematics League was founded in 1980-81 and was modeled after leagues that have flourished along the U.S. eastern seaboard since mid 1940s. The first year four schools participated, followed by sixteen schools in the second year.

The League exists to identify students who have unusual mathematical ability, to give them recogni-tion and encourage-ment, to bring them together with simi-larly gifted students for mutual stimulation, and to prod them into the study of topics not commonly taught in the high school cur-riculum. Students compete in Algebra ( simple and advanced ),Geometry, Trigonom-etry, and Probability.

League activities are focused on students with unusual mathe-matical ability, but they

are inextricably related to other concerns in mathematics educa-tion. We have always believed that a program for gifted students is shortsighted if it is not developed in a way that strengthens mathemat-ics education for all students.

Member schools be-long to a division of five to ten schools that often are aligned with their athletic confer-ence competitors. Each school has a team with a maximum of eight students, although individual participation

is also encouraged. The teams in each division come together for five meets each season. The top scoring team, and in some circumstances the top two teams, and the top scoring students in each division are invit-ed to the State Tourna-

ment which is held on the second Monday in March at Eagan High School. Currently there are 163 schools in the League in 24 divisions. Over 2,000 students participate. LeCenter is in the Wasioja Division,

which consists of the following schools: Shattuck-St.Mary’s, Pine Island, Kenyon/Wanamingo, Zumbro-ta/Mezeppa, Cannon Falls, Triton & Good-hue Public. 5 - Com-petitions are held each year in Kenyon.

Building year for Knowledge BowlBy Peter Kuriger Advisor

Knowledge Bowl is essentially a fast paced game in which schools compete against each other to answer chal-lenging questions. Five member teams compete in a written round followed by four oral rounds in which three teams vie to be the first to answer the question that they’ve just heard.

We practiced weekly, participated in six meets and made some lasting memories. Although we had a good year and learned a lot, this was a

building year for us. As teams compete from year to year they improve in their skills and knowl-edge. Members of this years team have improved quite a bit and I expect to

see them become much more competitive in the years to come. You

haven’t seen the last of them yet!
