O-1 A reading from Sirách 2, 1-9 (Trust in God)

My child, when you come to serve the Lord,

prepare yourself for trials.

Be sincere of heart and steadfast,

and do not be impetuous in time of adversity.

Cling to him, do not leave him

that you may prosper in your last days.

Accept whatever happens to you;

in periods of humiliation be patient.

For in fire gold is tested, and the chosen,

in the crucible of humiliation.

Trust in God, and he will help you;

make your ways straight and hope in him.

You that fear the Lord, wait for his mercy,

do not stray lest you fall.

You that fear the Lord, trust in him,

and your reward will not be lost.

You that fear the Lord, hope for good things,

for lasting joy and mercy.

Sirácides (Eclesiástico) 2, 1-9 Confiando en Dios

Si te has decidido a servir al Señor,

prepárate para la prueba.

Conserva recto tu corazón y sé decidido,

no te pongas nervioso

cuando vengan las dificultades.

Apégate al Señor, no te apartes de él; si actúas así,

arribarás a buen puerto al final de tus días.

Aceptas todo lo que te pase

y sé paciente cuando te halles botado en el suelo.

Porque así como el oro se purifica en el fuego,

así también los que agradan a Dios

pasan por el crisol de la humillación.

Confía en él y te cuidará;

sigue el camino recto y espera en él.

Ustedes que temen al Señor,

esperen su misericordia,

no se aparten de él, pues podrían caer.

Ustedes que temen al Señor, confíen en él:

no perderán su recompensa.

Ustedes que temen al Señor,

esperen recibir todo lo que vale la pena:

O-2 A reading from Sirách 6, 5-17 (true friendship)

Pleasant speech multiplies friends,

and gracious lips, friendly greetings.

Let those who are friendly to you be many,

but one in a thousand your confidant.

When you gain friends, gain them through testing,

and do not be quick to trust them.

For there are friends when it suits them,

but they will not be around in time of trouble.

Another is a friend who turns into an enemy,

and tells of the quarrel to your disgrace.

Others are friends, table companions,

but they cannot be found in time of affliction.

When things go well, they are your other self,

and lord it over your servants.

If disaster comes upon you, they turn against you

and hide themselves.

Stay away from your enemies,

and be on guard with your friends.

Faithful friends are a sturdy shelter;

whoever finds one finds a treasure.

Faithful friends are beyond price,

no amount can balance their worth.

Faithful friends are life-saving medicine;

those who fear God will find them.

Those who fear the Lord enjoy stable friendship,

for as they are, so will their neighbors be.

Sirácides (Eclesiástico - 6, 5-17) La verdadera amistad

Las palabras amables te harán ganar muchos amigos,

un lenguaje cortés atrae respuestas benevolentes.

Ten muchos amigos,

pero para aconsejarte escoge uno entre mil.

Si has encontrado un nuevo amigo,

comienza por ponerlo a prueba,

no le otorgues demasiado pronto tu confianza.

Hay amigos que sólo lo son cuando les conviene,

pero que no lo serán en las dificultades.

Hay amigos que se transforman en enemigos

y que dan a conocer a todo el mundo

su desavenencia contigo para avergonzarte.

Hay amigos que lo son para compartir tu mesa,

pero que no lo serán cuando vayan mal tus negocios.

Mientras estos marchen bien, serán como tu sombra,

e incluso mandarán a la gente de tu casa.

Pero si tienes reveses, se volverán contra ti

y evitarán encontrar tu mirada.

Mantente a distancia de tus enemigos

y cuídate de tus amigos.

Un amigo fiel es un refugio seguro;

el que lo halla ha encontrado un tesoro.

¿Qué no daría uno por un amigo fiel? ¡No tiene precio!

Un amigo fiel es como un remedio que te salva;

los que temen al Señor lo hallarán.

El que teme al Señor encontrará al amigo verdadero,

pues así como es él, así será su amigo.

Light is sweet!

and it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun.

However many years mortals may live,

let them, as they enjoy them all,

remember that the days of darkness will be many.

All that is to come is vanity.

Rejoice, O youth, while you are young

and let your heart be glad in the days of your youth.

Follow the ways of your heart, the vision of your eyes;

Yet understand regarding all this that God will bring you to judgment.

Banish misery from your heart and remove pain from your body,

for youth and black hair are fleeting.

Dulce es la luz y los ojos disfrutan viendo el sol.

Pero por muchos años que viva el hombre, y los disfrute todos,

debe recordar que los años oscuros serán muchos

y que todo lo que viene es pura ilusión.

Disfruta, muchacho, mientras eres joven

y pásalo bien en la juventud;

déjate llevar del corazón y de lo que atrae a los ojos;

y sabe que Dios te llevará a juicio para dar cuenta de todo.

Rechaza las penas del corazón y aleja los dolores del cuerpo:

niñez y juventud son efímeras.

1 Remember your Creator in the days of your youth,

before the evil days come

And the years approach of which you will say,

“I have no pleasure in them”;

and the clouds return after the rain.

8 Vanity of vanities, all things are vanity! 13 The last word, when all is heard:

Fear God and keep his commandments, for this concerns all humankind; 14 because God will bring to judgment every work,

with all its hidden qualities, whether good or bad.

1 Acuérdate de tu Creador durante tu juventud,

antes de que lleguen los días difíciles

y alcances los años en que digas: No les saco gusto.

2 Antes de que se oscurezca la luz del sol,

la luna y las estrellas, y a la lluvia siga el nublado.

8 Vanidad de vanidades, todo es vanidad. 13b teme a Dios y guarda sus mandamientos,

porque esto concierne a toda persona. 14 porque Dios traerá a juicio todo trabajo,

con todas sus cualidades ocultas, sean buenas o malas.

… y el polvo vuelva a la tierra que fue, y el espíritu vuelva a Dios, que lo dio. Pura ilusión —dice el Qohelet—, todo es pura ilusión. El Qohelet, además de ser un sabio, enseñó al pueblo lo que él sabía. Estudió, inventó y formuló muchos proverbios; el Qohelet procuró un estilo atractivo y escribió la verdad con acierto.

The word of the Lord came to me:

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,

before you were born I dedicated you,

a prophet to the nations I appointed you.

“Ah, Lord God!” I said,

“I do not know how to speak. I am too young!”

But the Lord answered me, do not say, “I am too young.”

To whomever I send you, you shall go;

whatever I command you, you shall speak.

Do not be afraid of them,

Me llegó una palabra de Yavé:

«Antes de formarte en el seno de tu madre, ya te conocía;

antes de que tú nacieras, yo te consagré,

Yo exclamé: «Ay, Señor, Yavé,

¡cómo podría hablar yo, que soy un muchacho!»

Y Yavé me contestó: «No me digas que eres un muchacho.

Irás adondequiera que te envíe,

y proclamarás todo lo que yo te mande.

No les tengas miedo,

14Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign;

the young woman, pregnant and about to bear a son,

shall name him Emmanuel.

15Curds and honey he will eat

O-7 From the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 11, 2-4 The strength of the prophet

The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him:

a spirit of wisdom and of understanding,

a spirit of counsel and of strength,

a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord,

and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord.

Not by appearance shall he judge,

nor by hearsay shall he decide,

but he shall judge the poor with justice,

and decide fairly for the land’s afflicted.

He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth,

and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. _______________________________________________________

O-8 A reading from the Prophet Isaiah 43, 1-6 Promises of Redemption and Restoration

But now, thus says the Lord,

who created you, Jacob, and formed you, Israel:

Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;

I have called you by name: you are mine.

When you pass through waters, I will be with you;

through rivers, you shall not be swept away.

When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned,

nor will flames consume you.

For I, the Lord, am your God,

the Holy One of Israel, your savior.

Because you are precious in my eyes

and honored, and I love you,

I give people in return for you

and nations in exchange for your life.

Fear not, for I am with you;

from the east I will bring back your offspring,

from the west I will gather you.

I will say to the north: Give them up!

and to the south: Do not hold them!

Bring back my sons from afar,

and my daughters from the ends of the earth:

All who are called by my name

el que te formó, Israel:

No temas, porque yo te he redimido,

O- 9 A reading from the prophet Isaías 49, 1-6 The Servant of The Lord

Hear me, coastlands, listen, distant peoples.

Before birth the Lord called me,

from my mother’s womb he gave me my name.

He made my mouth like a sharp-edged sword,

concealed me, shielded by his hand.

He made me a sharpened arrow,

in his quiver he hid me.

He said to me, you are my servant,

in you, Israel, I show my glory.

Though I thought I had toiled in vain,

for nothing and for naught spent my strength,

Yet my right is with the Lord,

my recompense is with my God.

For now the Lord has spoken

who formed me as his servant from the womb,

That Jacob may be brought back to him

and Israel gathered to him;

I am honored in the sight of the Lord,

and my God is now my strength!

It is too little, he says, for you to be my servant,

to raise up the tribes of Jacob,

and restore the survivors of Israel;

I will make you a light to the nations,

that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.

Lectura del Profeta Isaías 49, 1-6

"¡Escúchenme, costas lejanas,

presten atención, pueblos remotos!

El Señor me llamó desde el seno materno,

desde el vientre de mi madre pronunció mi nombre.

Él hizo de mi boca una espada afilada,

me ocultó a la sombra de su mano;

hizo de mí una flecha punzante,

me escondió en su aljaba.

Él me dijo: "Tú eres mi Servidor, Israel,

por ti yo me glorificaré".

Pero yo dije: "En vano me fatigué,

para nada, inútilmente, he gastado mi fuerza".

Sin embargo, mi derecho está junto al Señor

As for me, I exalt my God, my soul exalts the King of heaven,

and rejoices all the days of my life.

Let all sing praise to his greatness, let all speak and give thanks in Jerusalem.

Jerusalem, holy city, he will afflict you for the works of your hands,

but will again pity the children of the righteous.

Give thanks to the Lord with righteousness,

and bless the King of the ages,

so that your tabernacle may be rebuilt in you with joy.

May he gladden within you all who are captives;

may he cherish within you all who are distressed

Lectura de Tobías 13, 7-11 Yo exalto a mi Dios

Miren lo que ha hecho con ustedes y celébrenlo en alta voz.

Bendigan al Señor de la justicia y glorifiquen al Rey de los siglos.

Yo lo celebro en el país del destierro,

y manifiesto su fuerza y su grandeza a un pueblo pecador.

¡Conviértanse, pecadores, y practiquen la justicia en su presencia!

¡Quién sabe si él no les será favorable

y tendrá misericordia de ustedes!

A bright light will shine to the limits of the earth.

Many nations will come to you from afar,

to your holy name,

Bearing in their hands gifts for the King of heaven.

joyful worship in you;

your name will be great forever and ever.

Happy are those who love you,

and happy are those who rejoice in your peace.

Happy too are all who grieve over all your afflictions,

For they will rejoice over you and behold all your joy forever.

According to the grace of God given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building upon it. But each one must be careful how he builds upon it, for no one can lay a foundation other than the one that is there, namely, Jesus Christ.

If anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, the work of each will come to light, for the Day will disclose it. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each one’s work.

If the work stands that someone built upon the foundation, that person will receive a wage.

But if someone’s work is burned up, that one will suffer loss; the person will be saved, but only as through fire.

Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy.

Yo puse los cimientos como buen arquitecto, pues recibí ese talento de Dios, y otro construye encima. Que cada uno, sin embargo, se pregunte cómo construye encima. Que les ilumine la mirada interior, para que entiendan lo que esperamos a raíz del llamado de Dios, qué herencia tan grande y gloriosa reserva Dios a sus santos.

G-1 Luke 1:26-38: Maria’s Yes!

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God

to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin

betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David,

and the virgin’s name was Mary.

And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one!

The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled

at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting

this might be.

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary,

for you have found favor with God.

Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,

and you shall name him Jesus.

He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,

and the Lord God will give him the throne of David

his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,

and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be,

since I have no relations with a man?”

And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit

will come upon you, and the power of the Most High

will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born

And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,

has also conceived a son in her old age,

and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;

During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.

And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.

As they continued their journey he entered a village

where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.

She had a sister named Mary [who] sat beside the Lord

at his feet listening to him speak.

Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him

and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister

has left me by myself to do the serving?

Tell her to help me.”

The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha,

you are anxious and worried about many things.

There is need of only one thing.

Mary has chosen the better part

and it will not be taken from her.”

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asks for a loaf of bread, or a snake when he asks for a fish?

If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him.

“Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.

“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. Pidan y se les dará, busquen y encontrarán, llamen y se les abrirá, porque quien pide recibe, quien busca encuentra, a quien llama se le abrirá.

¿Quién de ustedes, si su hijo le pide pan, le da una piedra? ¿O si le pide pescado, le da una culebra? Pues si ustedes, que son malos, saben dar cosas buenas a sus hijos, ¡cuánto más dará el Padre del cielo cosas buenas a los que se las pidan!

Traten a los demás como quieren que los demás los traten. En esto consiste la ley y los profetas.

Entren por la puerta estrecha; porque es ancha la puerta y espacioso el camino que lleva a la perdición, y son muchos los que entran por ella. ¡Qué estrecha es la puerta!, ¡qué angosto el camino que lleva a la vida!, y son pocos los que lo encuentran.

25 At that time Jesus said in reply,

“I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,

but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.

Since the bridegroom was long delayed,

they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, there was a cry,

‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’

Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps.

The foolish ones said to the wise,

‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’

But the wise ones replied,

‘No, for there may not be enough for us and you.

the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked.

Afterwards the other virgins came and said,

Entonces el reino de los cielos será como diez muchachas

que salieron con sus lámparas a recibir al novio.

Cinco eran necias y cinco prudentes.

Las necias tomaron sus lámparas pero no llevaron aceite.

Las prudentes llevaban frascos de aceite con sus lámparas.

Como el novio tardaba, les entró el sueño y se durmieron.

A media noche se oyó un clamor:

¡Aquí está el novio, salgan a recibirlo!

Todas las muchachas se despertaron

y se pusieron a preparar sus lámparas.

Las necias pidieron a las prudentes:

¿Pueden darnos un poco de aceite?,

porque se nos apagan las lámparas.

Contestaron las prudentes:

No, porque seguramente no alcanzará para todas;

es mejor que vayan a comprarlo a la tienda.

Mientras iban a comprarlo, llegó el novio.

Las que estaban preparadas entraron con él

en la sala de bodas y la puerta se cerró.

Más tarde llegaron las otras muchachas diciendo:

Señor, Señor, ábrenos. Él respondió:

Les aseguro que no las conozco.

Por tanto, estén atentos,

porque no conocen ni el día ni la hora.

Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.

When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.

So you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

On that day you will not question me about anything. Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.

Juan 16, 20-22 Nadie podrá quitarles su alegría.

Jesús comprendió que querían preguntarle y les dijo: Ustedes discuten entre sí qué significan mis palabras: dentro de poco ya no me verán y poco después me volverán a ver.

Les aseguro que ustedes llorarán y se lamentarán mientras el mundo se divierte; estarán tristes, pero esa tristeza se convertirá en gozo.

Cuando una mujer va a dar a luz, está triste, porque le llega su hora. Pero, cuando ha dado a luz a la criatura, no se acuerda de la angustia, por la alegría que siente de haber traído un hombre al mundo.

Así ustedes ahora están tristes; pero los volveré a visitar y se llenarán de alegría, y nadie les quitará su alegría. Aquel día no me preguntarán nada.

Les aseguro que todo lo que pidan a mi Padre, él se lo concederá en mi nombre. Hasta ahora no han pedido nada en mi nombre; pidan y recibirán, para que su alegría sea completa.

They said in reply, “John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.”

And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Messiah.”

Jesús emprendió el viaje con sus discípulos hacia los pueblos de Cesarea de Felipe.

Él les preguntó a ellos: Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo? Respondió Pedro: Tú eres el Mesías.
