Widows and Orphans Widows and orphans apply to lines of a paragraph in this
context, rather than to women and children.- A widow is the last line of a paragraph appearing by itself at the
top of a page.- An orphan is the first line of a paragraph appearing by itself at
the bottom of a page.
These problems can be prevented using the followingactions.
1. Click the Widow/Orphan Control check box, and then2. click the Keep lines together option to ensure that the entire
paragraph appears on the same page. Or3. click the Keep with next option to prevent a soft page break
between two paragraphs. This option keeps a heading, whichis a one-line paragraph with its associated text in the nextparagraph
