51.3 Course Description
Explores the technical issues associated with buildingtypes for public use, including building structure,construction materials and techniques, and cost planningand specification.
It is aimed at developing students understanding of theimplications of using alternative materials for structuralsystems; an understanding of construction design anddetailing; and an appreciation of the selection and designof foundations in response to specific ground and soilconditions.

61.4 Course Objectives
On completion of this course students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the ground and soilconditions, materials, systems and components usedin the construction of commercial buildings;
2. Demonstrate knowledge of the techniques used toincorporate them into building, including sequencing ofoperations;
3. Evaluate design alternatives in terms of buildability andcost;
4. Communicate design alternatives using drawingsreflecting the statutory standards.

71.5 Teaching and Learning methods
This course will be delivered using the following means: Lecture for 3 hours per week for 12 weeks. Recordings of lectures will be made available on Blackboard,
usually within 24 hours of the event on campus. These willbe available through Blackboard to all students enrolled inthis course.
Self study tutorial questions and discussions. These will beavailable through Blackboard to all students enrolled in thiscourse.
Outside classroom: i) Emails/Blackboard discussion forum,ii) Your peer learning group and or iii) Consultation time : 4to 5 pm on every Wednesday.
Distance learning students will receive equivalent instructionthrough online or other distance education strategies.
