Ferroelectric

Inmostdielectricmaterials(insulatingdensesolids)thepolarizationiseitherionicorelectronic.Ferroelectricmaterial:Ioniccontributionisthelargestandithastwoofthefollowingconditions1. Containsionsdisplaceinresponsetoanelectricfield

2. Thedisplacementslineupinthesamedirection3. Thedisplacementsdonotdisappearafterremovingtheelectricfield

‐Someferroelectricmaterialsdevelopaspontaneouspolarizationwithoutanexternalappliedelectricfield.‐Insomematerials,polarizationdoesnotvanishafterremovingtheelectricfield(remnantpolarization).Itcanonlyremainremovedbyinvertingtheelectricfield,ahysteresisloopisobtained.Whatistheimplicationofthat?

Note:DirectionofpolarizationisreversibleNote:Ferroelectricsdonotusuallycontainiron.Whyaretheycalledferroelectric?CriticalTemperature(Curie):similartoferromagnetic.Abovethecriticaltemperature,ferroelectriceffectsaregoneandthematerialbecomesdielectric.RangeofCurietemperature:
