Encountering Christ

• “On page after page, we find that what is presented here is not theory, but an encounter with a Person who lives in the Church” (PF 11).

Fidei Depositum

• JPII’s Apostolic Constitution on the Publication of the CCC – given Oct 1992(30th anniversary of opening of Vat II)

• Guarding the Deposit of Faith is the mission of the Church.

• Vatican I – had the topic of a universal catechism but then the Franco-Prussian war 1870 broke out and the council was closed prematurely.

• Vatican II - the topic of a universal catechism was proposed by Cardinal Jager (See Intro to the CCC p. 11) but this call did not develop into action for two decades.

Fidei Depositum

• Vatican II & the CCC – Intention & Purpose of the Council =

• to highlight the Church’s Apostolic & Pastoral mission

• To lead all to seek & receive Christ’s love…by making the truth of the Gospel shine forth

– Principal task of the Council = • To guard & present better the precious

deposit of Christian doctrine

• Not to condemn errors so much as to calmly show the strength and beauty of the doctrine of faith

– For JP II, Vat II is the constant reference point for [his] every pastoral action

Fidei Depositum

• 1985 Extraordinary Synod – – Called by JP II to

• Celebrate graces of Vat II • Study its teaching in greater depth so

the Christian faithful can better adhere to it.

• To promote knowledge & application of it.

– The Synod Fathers said, “Very many have expressed the desire that a catechism or compendium of all Catholic doctrine regarding both faith and morals be composed…The presentation of doctrine must be biblical and liturgical. It must be sound doctrine suited to the present life of Christians”

Fidei Depositum • JPII’s response = “After the Synod

ended, I made this desire my own, considering it as fully responding to a real need…of the universal Church”

• CCC and the New Evangelization

– It is offered to the entire Church “for a catechesis renewed at the living sources of the faith…[it] will make a very important contribution to that work of renewing the whole life of the Church”

Fidei Depositum 1 - Process & Sprit of Drafting • “Very extensive collaboration” • 6 years of intense work • 1986 – Commission of 12 Cardinals

Chaired by Ratzinger – tasked with preparing a draft – Gives directives, follows all stages of editing.

• Editorial committee - 7 diocesan bishops, theological & catechetical experts assist. – Write the text – Make emendations requested by the

Commission & the Bishops of the whole world – resulting in a symphony of faith

• 1000 bishops responded, the final version reflects their more than 24,000 modi, 9 Drafts, …this is truly the “voice of the universal Church”

Arrangement of Material FD 2

• A catechism should faithfully & systematically present: – The teaching of Sacred Scripture

– The Living Tradition

– The teaching of the Magisterium

– Spiritual heritage of • The Fathers

• Doctors

• Saints (see p. 62 in Intro to CCC)

• All of this is to “allow for a better knowledge of the Christian Mystery & for enlivening the faith of the People of God” (emphasis added)

Page 10: Lecture 5 The Catechism of the Catholic Church: The “sure ...jbitting.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/127908114/Lecture... · mission of the Church. •Vatican I – had the topic of a

• It presents both new & old – The content is always the same(old) but

is the source of ever new light(new)

• Kept traditional order as seen in the Roman Catechism (aka Catechism of St. Pius V, aka Catechism of the Council of Trent)

• “The Primacy in catechesis is to be given

to God and to His works” (Intro p. 48)

• These 4 Parts are related to one another…they are all centered on the Christian Mystery

The Christian Mystery FD 2

• The Christian Mystery = The Mystery of Christ

“…I became a minister according to the divine office which was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now made manifest to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we proclaim, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man mature in Christ” (Col 1:25-28).

Doctrinal Value FD 3

• Publication ordered by virtue of the Pope’s “Apostolic Authority”

• “It is a statement of the Church’s faith”

• “A sure norm for teaching the faith”

• Catechists, “use it assiduously in fulfilling [the] mission of proclaiming the faith and calling people to the Gospel of life”

Page 13: Lecture 5 The Catechism of the Catholic Church: The “sure ...jbitting.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/127908114/Lecture... · mission of the Church. •Vatican I – had the topic of a

Intended audience

• Primarily intended for the Bishops…but also intended for all the faithful and even those individuals outside the communion of the Church who ask us to “give an account of the hope that is in us” (Cf. 1 Pet 3:15; FD 3; Laetamur Magnopere)

• At the service of evangelization - “among its intended readership are agnostics, seekers and inquirers” (Intro to the CCC p. 19)

• At the service of the New Evangelization – the CCC “might now even begin to reevangelize a world desperate for Christ’s saving truths” (Flawed Expectations p. 33)

• Chapter V of Catechesi tradendae (articles 35-45) is titled “Everyone Needs to Be Catechized” and articles 43 and 44 deal with the target audience of adults.

The CCC, Adult catechesis and training for mission

• Catechesis of adults is the “principal form of catechesis” (CT 43)

• The 1971 GCD goes so far as to say, “All other forms [of catechesis], which are indeed always necessary, are in some way oriented to it [adult catechesis]” (GCD 20)

• “The “Catechism of the Catholic Church” and its Compendium are, above all, a resource for teaching the faith and supporting adults in the Church in their evangelizing and catechizing mission” (Synod Prop 29 Oct 2012)

Determining the Essentials

• “the person who becomes a disciple of Christ has the right to receive "the word of faith" not in mutilated, falsified or diminished form but whole and entire, in all its rigor and vigor” (CT 30 emphasis added).

• At the same time, a selection of teaching points must be made.

• “The whole of the faith is essential but I only have a limited amount of time to hand on the faith” (Craft 91).

Foundational Truths (Craft 97) • The essentials of

doctrine should flow from and return to the Foundational Truths.

• For meaning - higher illuminate the lower, Reason words

MHT, Christ, Paschal Mystery, Human Person

Foundational Truths

• Example - When teaching the doctrine of “sin” we must refer to the higher truths of God and man.

• The CCC show the importance of knowing the higher truths. Look at the opening paragraph to the 3rd pillar. It’s a quote from St. Leo the Great: – “Christian recognize your dignity” – “You share in God’s nature” – “Remember who is your head” – “Never forget that you have been

rescued” – “into the light of the Kingdom of

God”

---Man ---The Trinity ---Christ ---Paschal Mystery ---the Church

The Story in the CCC

• Summed up in CCC 54-73 • Again in CCC 1079-1082 as mentioned above • Present in whole parts of the CCC e.g. the

fourth pillar on prayer (“in the Old Testament” CCC 2568), (“in the fullness of time” CCC 2598-2622), (“in the age of the Church” 2623-2649)

• In individual topics and sections e.g. the doctrine of the Church – “her origin in the Holy Trinity’s plan and her

progressive realization in history” (CCC 758)…from the Father’s heart (CCC 759)

– Her institution in Christ “in the fullness of time” (CCC 763)

– Her perfection in “the glory of heaven” (CCC 769)

– See p. 87 in Craft

The Compendium

• In his letter approving the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI says, “it contains, in concise form, all the essential and fundamental elements of the Church’s faith…which allows believers and non-believers alike to behold the entire panorama of the Catholic faith” (emphasis added).

• The compendium also contains beautiful art work for teaching and Common catholic prayers.

Discussion Questions

• 1) Why is it that Pope Benedict felt comfortable teaching that the Catechism is not theory or opinion, but the reality of our faith, an encounter with the Person of Christ? (hint = John 18:37; Dei Verbum 2)

• 2) How can DREs/PCLs better implement Blessed John Paul II’ call to use the Catechism assiduously in proclaiming the faith?
