The Philips Lighting differenceWe believe in creating innovative outdoor solutions that beautify and inspire. At the same time we also respect the delicate balance that exists between the identity of a city and the needs of its residents. Our expertise and unrivalled knowledge has enabled us to develop LED lighting solutions that are practical and beautiful, but also energy efficient and sustainable. Solutions that make cities more liveable while still respecting the planet.

A responsible choiceIt’s well known that inefficient lighting depletes our planet’s precious resources and that emissions can affect the quality of air that we breathe. But it’s also important to understand

the impact of artificial light on our sleep and other natural processes that affect our quality of life as a whole. By limiting light to when and where it’s needed, our solutions help you to reclaim ‘dark skies’ for the sake of beauty, natural rhythms and conservation.

Better experiences, better livesOn the pages that follow you’ll find out how Philips can help you to create engaging environments, clear, de-cluttered spaces and secure and beautiful LED-lit streets. We’re committed to helping cities build an image of livability and vitality. Invigorating skylines without high energy use and helping people to do more by using less. We know you are too.

Introducing LEDsHighly efficient, long lasting, environmentally friendly and controllable, LEDs have opened up a whole new world of possibilities for lighting. Over the last decade, advances in technology have taken place at the speed of light, enabling you to light exciting spaces and create flexible ambiences with high intensity, white or coloured light. All with a fraction of the energy consumption of conventional lighting techniques.

LED outdoor lightingUntil recently, LED systems were only suitable for narrow streets, limiting their use in other urban lighting schemes. Now, thanks to breakthroughs in lighting technology, LEDs can provide uniform illumination for residential streets going up to >15m width, all depending on light levels required. White light that’s clear and comfortable with perfect colour rendering and no glare, making our cities feel safe and look more attractive.

Saving energyBut LED light isn’t just aesthetically pleasing. The technology is extremely energy-efficient, delivering white light of consistent high quality, brightness and intensity, whilst cutting energy costs by up to 70%. LED sources also have an extremely long life, thereby eliminating the sort of maintenance and replacement required by traditional lighting. A ready-to-use, future-proof solution that will pay for itself within the lifetime of the light source.

Sustainable solutionsSustainability and respect for the environment are our core values. That’s why our LED solutions aren’t just low on energy use; they’re also support sustainable design. Longer lasting, they need replacing less frequently, thereby reducing waste. They’re also mercury free and can be housed in special luminaires designed for easy disassembly and recycling. A green switch alternative that’s good for your city and the planet.

Today is an exciting time for anyone working with LED-based solutions because they allow light to be used in completely new ways. Two technology trends are pioneering the new world of LED – mimicked light sources and LED plates. Each innovation is driven by the needs of people, helping them to feel more comfortable and at home in their surroundings.

2 LED technologies LEDGINE & Fortimo

LED plate (LEDGINE)LED plate solutions provide the same excellent light quality and building blocks as mimicked light solutions. They also provide outstanding night preservation with minimal light spillage, glare or nuisance. However, they offer considerably more scope than mimicked light sources in terms of their range of outdoor applications. The multi-layer optics allow you to customise solutions for any major road, urban street, city centre or residential application with the option to upgrade quickly and simply at any time in the future.

Mimicked light sourcesSolutions that provide a diffused distribution of LED light are known as mimicked light sources because they provide a similar ambience to PL and PL-T solutions. Thanks to the remote phosphor technology there is no compromise whatsoever on light comfort What’s more, mimicked light sources provide excellent facial recognition and an improved perception of safety. The breakthrough technology provides a more sustainable and financially attractive solution for residential lighting applications with no colour shift over time or between luminaires.

In the current context of awareness of ecological issues and our footprint on the planet, it is important to emphasize the costs of public lighting on our energy bill. This latter represents approximately 40% and could be reduced by 50% if the lighting was equipped with telemanagement solutions.

The right light at the right moment

StarsenseSystem of remote light points that works equally well on ferromagnetic and electronic equipment and which can be integrated in the lamp foot or deported mast. It is not limited in power scenarios and it can easily have different behavior on the same installation. Most comprehensive system, it also allows to have feedback from the installation, which supports easy maintenance. This solution can generate up to 70% energy savings.

DynadimmerAdditional controller included in each light point - operated on electronic equipment and can be integrated into the lantern. Il can apply 5 levels of power, (re) definable on the level and duration, per chosen light point. For example, an average energy saving of approximately 40% per year can be realised.

LumistepElectronic ballast bi-power which lowers the flux of the lamp and power consumed over a period of 6, 8 or 10 hours (3 programmed versions - not editable). Lumistep doesn't require an external controller. The potential energy savings (on power system) is 23% in 60W version, 40% in 90W and 140W version.

LED GREEN Program

Carbon neutral luminairesSustainability and energy saving are our key core values. We aim to delight people with energy efficient solutions, through efficient optics, light sources and intelligent controls. With LEDs we’ve also greatly reduced the amount of energy needed to run our luminaires, the reason they have the most environmental impact.

However, we’ve also decided to go one step further by neutralising the environmental impact of some of our ranges. SpeedStar will not only represent a breakthrough in energy efficient solutions for road lighting; it will also be the first certified carbon neutral luminaire!

The carbon footprint of its manufacturing phase has been assessed and verified by an external and independent agency. By financing certified projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions, we will be compensating for this figure, making it carbon neutral. This programme will soon be extended to our key outdoor luminaire ranges such as CitySoul and CitySpirit.

Best in class for energy savings, produced in a ISO-14001 factory which offsets its carbon footprint, SpeedStar is definitely the greenest luminaire of all.

Acting responsibly towards the environment means securing the optimum balance between energy savings (and CO2 reduction) versus costs during the lifetime of your LED luminaire. The LED GREEN Program ensures that all your luminaires have their LEDGINE modules upgraded at the right time, allowing you to benefit from continuous energy savings.

Peace of mind from Philips To maximise their performance, LEDGINE modules need to be replaced every six to eight years. Our LED GREEN Program takes care of it for you, ensuring all your luminaires have their LEDGINE modules upgraded at the right time with a full guarantee on all luminaires during the 10-year Program. Not only will it eliminate any worries about unforeseen maintenance costs, as LED technology evolves over the next 12 years, 6-yearly upgrades could reduce your energy consumption and CO2 emissions by an extra 45%.

Planned upgradesThe LED GREEN Program is an extremely attractive financial option that makes planning for upgrades simplicity itself. With budget control and complete flexibility you can afford to go LED now and show your commitment to continuous energy savings in the next 10 years.

Preventing accidentsWhite LED light makes our streets safer for drivers and pedestrians. Visibility is a critical factor in road safety and tests show that this is actually improved with white light. Not only can drivers detect roadside movement more quickly, they also have more time to stop should something be about to cross their path. Pedestrian safety is also improved because people are more likely to see oncoming traffic and react accordingly. So, by making our roads and pavements safer, white LED light has the potential to prevent serious injuries and reduce fatalities.

Revolutionary LEDLED technology is revolutionising functional outdoor lighting for major roads in the city. Energy efficient and controllable, it also offers dimming possibilities. For example, Starsense eliminates wasted light during the night when there is less traffic and therefore less light is needed. It’s easy to install and pre-set dimming schemes make saving energy simplicity itself.

At the heart of a city lie its landmarks. Lighting buildings and monuments puts them centre stage, creating markers for orientation and celebrating the city’s unique identity. From single buildings to entire districts, lighting adds the drama and accents that bring the cityscape to life at night.

Architectural lighting

Inspiring ideasIn the hustle-bustle of the city, the imaginative use of light can create a sense of space, manage moods and enhance lives. Our lighting solutions provide 1,000 shades of high quality white light in a wide range of colour temperatures and brightness. With a wide variety of optics you can create precise light effects for every architectural application. All it takes is our technological expertise and your imagination.

Powercore TechnologyPowerCore technology controls the power output to fixtures rapidly, efficiently and accurately. Our iW solutions have channels of warm white and cool white light with colour temperatures from 2700 K to 6500 K. The brightness can be adjusted at the same time as varying or maintaining a constant colour temperature, giving you an intelligent, tuneable solution for all sorts of applications. Our eW solutions give you the option of static white light in 2700 K and 4000 K temperatures with the ability to adjust the brightness according to your preference.

Optbin TechnologyIndividual LEDs are never exactly the same, so those with similar colour and output performance are grouped together in “bins”. Philips Optibin Technology is an advanced optimisation process that minimises the effects of the inherent variance and inconsistency of the "bins" produced by LED manufacturers. The result is optimal colour consistency across all our lighting solutions.

White lightWith a full spectrum of colour temperatures and a high colour rendering index, our white LED solutions allow you to illuminate the city’s architecture in a more vibrant, natural and authentic way. The only tool you need to unleash your creativity to dazzling effect.

Solar Lighting Customised solutionsApproximately 1.6 billion people in the world still have little or no access to electricity. So when the sun goes down at the end of the day, with it goes the possibility of participating in any social, cultural or recreational activities such as sport. Our solar powered LEDs let people play when night falls.

Every lighting scheme presents its own unique set of challenges. A myriad of different techniques, equipment and technologies are available to turn your creative ideas into reality. But to achieve the very best results you need to work as part of a team. No one understands that more than Philips.

LED floodlights, portable poles, solar panels and batteries, or just a set of floodlights. Setting up the system is made simple. Using the very latest energy-efficient LED lighting technology and advanced battery cells the system provides up to eight hours of floodlighting on a single solar charge – the equivalent of two or three full evening football matches or training sessions. This versatile floodlighting solution can also be very useful for non-sporting applications in locations without access to an electricity grid, such as evening classes in remote villages, festivities, safety and security, shops or outdoor markets, or emergency lighting for disaster situations. Solar lighting solutions from Philips also enable the vast improvement of street safety by bringing light to roads without the pre-condition of an existing energy network, just using the power of the sun when night falls. The systems are highly sustainable, with a rugged design, able to withstand the extreme rigours of life in some of the more challenging and remote terrains in the world. It’s perfect sense and simplicity.

RenderTool visualisationLighting designers have the skills and imagination to visualise the most amazing lighting possibilities. But not everyone shares that vision. That’s why we have developed our RenderTool visualisation service. It alllows you to superimpose images of luminaires and masts onto a snapshot of your location so that your clients can see an interpretation of your lighting scheme. Reassuring them throughout the whole design process and bringing light to life.

A world’s first from PhilipsIn November 2009 Philips came up with the ultimate solution: the world’s first dedicated solar-powered LED floodlighting (intense beams of light). The new Philips system enables communities in developing and developed countries alike to enjoy playing or watching sport long into the night, helping to bring the fun and enjoyment of sports to communities where a lack of electricity limits participation. The solar system is available as a fully portable solution, and also on project basis. It can include

Dedicated lighting professionalsOur dedicated application and product development teams are here to help. New demonstration areaTo address the changing agenda for lighting designers and reflect the increasing densification of urban areas, we have completely transformed our demonstration are at the Outdoor Lighting Application Center (OLAC). Originally representing a street with family homes, OLAC now recreates a contemporary urban setting with a mixture of residential buildings, a restaurant, nursery school and private houses.

The new area starts with an old installation as an eye-opener to demonstrate how lighting can be improved with modern technology. The new solutions are all state-of-the-art and feature a variety of light sources, luminaires, optics, lighting controls and dimming modes to illustrate the possibilities. It provides a unique opportunity to see the latest trends in urban lighting and assess how they meet the needs of your city in terms of sustainability, creativity and liveability. To find out more, just ask your local Philips representative.

city.people.lightOur city.people.light project pushes creative and intellectual boundaries, producing innovative and relevant lighting solutions that enrich urban settings. We share ideas and network with partners such as the Professional Lighting Designers Association (PLDA). We have also established an annual city.people.light award in conjunction with LUCI (Lighting Urban Community International) Association.

Experience it yourselfLighting our cities requires more subtlety than ever before to meet the very different needs of residents, motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. It must be functional and forward thinking, improving safety, visibility, ambience and identity at the same time as being energy-conscious and preventing light nuisance and spillage. We can help to inspire you.
