Women with Fire Masks

• Taken in Downshire Hill, London, 1941

Page 5: Lee Miller

• The lighting that was used in this photograph was natural because it was taken outdoors.

• The photograph is taken from the back of the women that are sitting down. I can tell because the woman's face is really bright and she's looking back to the camera.

• Rule of thirds appears on this photograph because the woman to the left would be on the line. This photograph is really sharp and not blurry at all.

• This photograph is trying to communicate how women had to protect themselves from everything that was going on at that time during the war.

• I selected this photograph as opposed to any other one because I wanted to learn more about why those women were wearing those masks.

Prison Guard

Taken in Buchenwald, 1945.

Page 8: Lee Miller

• The lighting used was artificial. The lighting was taken from the front and it was adjusted properly.

• The main subject is the man that has been brutally beaten.

• The photographer is trying to communicate how badly people were beaten that were on Hitler's side.

• In this photograph the texture of the photograph isn't really good because it looks blurry in some parts.

• The photographer is trying to communicate the revenge taken by the inmates on their former guards. And how badly people had revenge and beat the people they didn’t like.

• I selected this photograph as opposed to any other because it shows how the prisoner was beaten and you can see the pain he's going through.

From The Top Of The Great Pyramid

Taken in Egypt , 1937.

Page 11: Lee Miller

• The lighting that was used was natural because it was taken outdoors.

• The light was behind the pyramid and it made it have a shadow. It was interesting that the picture is just a shadow and not the actual pyramid.

• The main subject is the shadow of the pyramid which was placed at the

• center of the photograph.

• The photograph is striking because the shadow of the pyramid is at the center.

• The photographer is trying to communicate that you can reach a high point in your life and that shadows are also interesting photographs.

• I selected this photograph as opposed to any other one because I was wondering why she took a photograph of a shadow.

Dead SS Guard in the Canal

• Taken at a concentration camp in Dachau, Germany 1945

Page 14: Lee Miller

• The lighting in this photograph is natural. It is coming from the top as if were from the sun. The light isn't too bright nor too dark.

• The main subject in the photograph is the dead man that is floating in the water. I can tell because it’s the biggest thing and it just captured my eye.

• The main subject is really striking because its at the center of the photograph and there’s nothing much around his body but water.

• The photographer is trying to communicate that after the war many people were being killed. The images that Miller captured in war's immediate aftermath also reflected a disturbing, surrealistic juxtaposition of horror.

• I selected this photograph as opposed to any other because I wanted to know there

this photograph was taken and I wanted to know who that guy was.

Saul Steinberg at Farley Farm

• Taken at Farley Farm. July, 1953.

Page 17: Lee Miller

• The lighting in this photograph is natural. • I cant really tell what direction it is exactly coming from but I know its from the

sun. The light from the sun just evens everything out in the photograph.

• The main subject in this photograph is the man who is at the center on the photograph. I can tell because the is at the center and everything else is farther apart .

• The photographer wanted to make this photograph more striking by taking the photograph outside with the natural light from the sun. The texture of this photograph is very sharp and not blurry.

• This photograph was a post war photograph at Lee Millers home.

• I selected this photograph as opposed to any other because I wanted to know what that man was doing and where he was at.
