ATTRACTIONS visitleeds.co.uk

First up, the collections of Leeds Art Gallery and the Henry Moore Institute, with everything from magnificent 19th century oils to the most provocative modern sculpture, as well as exciting exhibitions such as the Northern Art Prize, all free of charge. After enjoying lunch inside the amazingly ornate Tiled Hall Café, we head for the new Gallery Shop and Craft Centre and Design Gallery for that one-off treat.

Harewood House

Feeding the penguins at Harewood House

Inside Harewood House

…after taking a tour of the house, you can easily spend a whole day here. We always try to time it, so we can help feed the penguins! Then we head to the Terrace Tearooms for something delicious and enjoy views of the lovely ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped gardens, before catching a contemporary art exhibition in the adjoining Gallery.

Harewood isn’t just a beautiful stately home…

visitleeds.co.uk ATTRACTIONS

After a tour of the sumptuous treasures of Tudor-Jacobean Temple Newsam house……pay a visit to the estate’s farm, where you can admire rare breed sheep, pigs and chickens before finding out just how tasty they are with a dish of sausages in the café. If you’d rather try the local vintage tipple, visit nearby Leventhorpe Vineyard to sample their award-winning wines.

Temple Newsam

Leventhorpe Vineyard

You might expect mills and mighty machinery to feature in the story of Leeds, as told in Leeds City Museum… ...and you’d be right, but there’s also everything from the British Museum’s Pharaoh: King of Egypt, to a trip down memory lane with the Silver 70s exhibition. Sitting outdoors at the café, you’re right in the heart of Leeds; it’s a brilliant location for watching events and also a starting point for city exploration with the Leeds Owl Trail.

Headingley Carnegie Stadium

Chevin Forest Park at Otley

If you’re among those sports fans whose heart beats faster at the mere mention of ‘Headingley’……then don’t miss the chance to experience a match with just fresh air between you and the action at Headingley Carnegie Stadium – the home of Leeds cricket and rugby. Then relive your favourite players’ most glorious moments at the Yorkshire Cricket Museum, before exploring Headingley, a hub for cafés and welcoming pubs.

Leeds Rhinos

It’s so peaceful, that it’s hard to believe Otley’s Chevin Forest Park… …is just a few miles from Leeds. If you’re feeling energetic, climb the wooded path up the Chevin to enjoy a fantastic view from the summit, or get pedalling along the 6.5km of cycle-friendly bridle paths. We’d recommend dropping in at the town centre Bondgate Bakery beforehand to stock up on some of the tastiest breads, cakes and other picnic goodies around.

Royal Armouries Museum Just a short walk along the waterfront from the city centre, the Royal Armouries……at Clarence Dock is home to thousands of unique, precious – and sometimes downright terrifying – objects, from the exquisitely deadly weapons in the Oriental Gallery, to Henry VIII’s tournament gear and the largest animal armour in the world. Don’t leave without seeing how you’d fare on the battlefield by testing your skills in the crossbow range.

The 12th century abbey has inspired poets and painters over the centuries and still has a haunting atmosphere, as you follow in the footsteps of its monks. Just across the road is Abbey House Museum, a gem of a family day out, with recreated Victorian streets and toys through the ages. Catch

a bite to eat at the Gatehouse Café – or pick up some fresh produce from the monthly deli market in the abbey cloisters – and then it’s a gentle walk back into Leeds along the canal towpath, looking out for more wildlife along the way.

Kirkstall Abbey

Keep your eyes peeled and you might see a rare wild red kite soaring majestically over the iconic ruins of Kirkstall Abbey…

To get a taste of Leeds’ creative scene, join other culture vultures……on one of the Art Walks on the first Wednesday of each month. Led by savvy curators Pavilion, the early-evening walks take in their pick of the city’s current exhibitions at venues such as Project Space Leeds, the Henry Moore Institute and Leeds Met Gallery. Stop off for a pint or a bite to eat first in Holbeck Urban Village: We recommend the Cross Keys.

Holbeck Urban Village

Meerkats at Tropical World.Chelsea Gardens, Roundhay Park

We can spend hours lazing in Roundhay Park……watching everyone having fun, or wandering around the beautifully planted and award-winning Chelsea Gardens inspired by Monet, the Alhambra in Spain and Leeds’ canal heritage. Or, we work up an appetite with a brisk walk around the lake, before enjoying lunch or dinner at The Mansion then paying a visit to the exotic animals in Tropical World.

Lotherton Hall Bird Garden

With red deer running through the parkland and everything from flamingos to snowy owls among the 200 rare species in the bird garden, Lotherton Hall……is another country house offering far more than fine china – although it has that too. Roam beyond the Edwardian gardens to discover nature-filled woodlands, before returning for afternoon tea in the Stables Café.

It’s no surprise that shows often start at West Yorkshire Playhouse and end up in the West End…Go there and you know you’ll be in for a treat, be it heavyweight drama, fresh new writing, family shows such as Swallows and Amazons or electrifying performances from Phoenix Dance.

Whether it’s roof-raising sopranos or finger-clicking showstoppers on the bill we’re always excited the minute the curtain lifts at Leeds Grand Theatre and Opera House…Their 2012 programme is packed with hit shows including Dirty Dancing, Northern Ballet’s Madame Butterfly and Opera North’s Giulio Cesare. Head upstairs to the Howard Assembly Room and you’ll even get a behind-the-scenes peek at Opera North in rehearsal.

You can also enjoy the awe-inspiring sounds of Leeds Town Hall organ for free on Monday lunchtimes – it’s the largest of its kind in Europe and the Town Hall itself is a Victorian masterpiece.

Top comedians and their fans alike look forward to nights at the City Varieties… …a plush, Grade II listed Victorian music hall with a wonderfully intimate atmosphere – we love meeting stars in the Circle Bar after performances.

The Electric Press on Millennium Square has everything you need for a great family evening out……with a host of tasty restaurants next to the Carriageworks Theatre, where you’ll find plenty of affordable shows, along with events such as Banff Mountain Film Festival and the Emerge gala of new work.

CITY LIMITLESS

One reason why we love Leeds so much is that it’s only a quick hop out of town to discover so many other wonderful Yorkshire experiences.

York will take your breath away and we’re not just talking about the massive stained glass windows in the Minster……nor climbing the 275 steps to the top of its tower. There’s history around every corner and a great way to view it is by walking the medieval city walls. We love to stop off in the Yorkshire Museum Gardens with a picnic from de’Clare Deli.

Feel your cares melt away in the baking hot rooms and icy plunge pool of Harrogate’s Victorian Turkish Baths……an exquisitely tiled temple to total relaxation. Afterwards, indulge yourself with afternoon tea at Bettys, before taking a stroll around the lovely Valley Gardens or browsing some of the antiques shops in the Montpellier Quarter.

Built by Victorian mill owner Titus Salt to house his workers, these days Saltaire village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site……with cafés, vintage shops and its own festival every September. After a walk along the Leeds-Liverpool canal, enjoy a bistro lunch in the light-filled Salt’s Diner before browsing the large collection by David Hockney housed in Sir Titus’s imposing Salts Mill.

Take a stroll like no other around Yorkshire Sculpture Park……where green fields and woodland are home to extraordinary sculptures by greats such as Henry Moore, and where a relaxed picnic or lunch on the café balcony is a feast for the eyes, too. For a truly culture packed day out, move on to the award-winning new Hepworth Gallery and delve into the creative genius of sculptor Barbara Hepworth.

If you enjoyed the film of Jane Eyre, see more of the Brontë sisters’ wild and romantic world with a visit to their home, the Brontë Parsonage Museum……in picturesque Haworth. Stir your imagination further with a trip on the nearby Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, where vintage steam trains chug along the line featured in The Railway Children.

Bradford is the centre for photography and film – that’s why we love it! Discover world-class, cutting-edge images in the National Media Museum and nearby Impressions Gallery……or catch 3D marvels and gripping adventures in the Museum’s IMAX. Show the kids what you’re made of at Space Invaders in the games lounge, before enjoying a taste of Asia in the Curry Capital of Great Britain 2011.

Map Ref: Leeds City Map G4

Situated in the heart of Leeds and showcasing international talent, Opera North is England’s award-winning national opera company. Vibrant and vivacious, the company prides itself on a fresh approach to opera. Also programming its own performance space in Leeds, the Howard Assembly Room, the company brings the most exciting musicians, performers, writers and film together in the North of England.

The year begins with two of the greatest of Italian operas: Bellini’s Norma and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Brimming with glorious melodies, spellbinding arias and achingly beautiful duets, Norma’s famous ‘Casta Diva’ was made legendary by Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland. Madama Butterfly is one of the world’s best loved operas, with a heartbreaking story of love and betrayal, exquisite set and costumes, and rapturous music which has become universally popular outside the opera house.

May 2012 sees a major new production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s great classic Carousel. Voted Best Musical of the 20th century by Time Magazine, it features some of the most powerfully moving songs ever written for the stage, including the immortal ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, ‘If I Loved You’ and the joyful ‘June Is Bustin’ Out All Over’.

In June 2012, the company performs the second part of its critically acclaimed Ring Cycle, Wagner’s Die Walküre. After the sell-out success of the first instalment, tickets are already in short supply.

HEADINGLEY THE TOPS153 Otley Road, Headingley, Leeds LS6 3QGT: +44 (0) 113 257 2197F: +44 (0) 113 257 2197E: [email protected]: www.thetops.co.uk

Located within walking distance of shops, supermarkets and all amenities, this detached house stands within its own gardens and private car park and is divided into two self-contained apartments, providing accommodation only two-and-a-half miles from Leeds city centre.

The ground floor apartment sleeps two persons in one double bedroom, whilst the maisonette above sleeps five persons in three bedrooms.

Each unit has its own lounge with colour TV and DVD player, bathroom with bath and shower, full gas central heating, a fully-equipped kitchen including laundry and ironing facilities and all bedding and bed sheets are provided.

The address is within easy reach of Headingley Carnegie Stadium, Leeds United FC, Leeds General Infirmary, St James’s Hospital, Yorkshire Television, Leeds University, The Royal Armouries, and Leeds Bradford International Airport. The centre of Bradford is only nine miles away.

Our type of accommodation is recommended because unlike hotels and guest houses, these apartments have the advantage of being self-contained and private, and are virtually a home from home. The Tops was established in 1980 and is open all year.
