Nestled in the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, our campus is beautiful year-round and our academic programs take advantage of this “natural laboratory” every day.

At 4,000 feet above sea level, Lees-McRae is the highest campus on the east coast, offering miles of hiking, running, and biking trails on campus. The Appalachian region is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts, and many of our students take advantage of the activities in our area, including hiking, camping, climbing, repelling, kayaking, fishing, skiing, and snowboarding.

The Banner Elk community has something to offer every student, including festivals, theatre events, concerts, dining, shopping, and much more.

• At Lees-McRae College, academics reach far beyond the classroom, and the Blue Ridge Mountains serve as a “natural laboratory” for our students.

• Wildlife Biology students have access to our 70 acre Elk Valley Preserve and Ecology Field Station where they work hands on with local habitats and conduct research.

• The May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at Lees-McRae houses the Blue Ridge Wildlife Institute in which our Wildlife Rehabilitation students work with nearly 1,000 animals each year.

• Our location in ski country allows Athletic Training students the opportunity to observe the ER during ski season and work directly with our own LMC student athletes.

• For students who truly love the outdoors, our Outdoor Adventure Studies minor offers several unique classes in outdoor leadership.

“Outdoor Programs has been a huge part of my college career, and the director, Dee Thomas, has been very supportive and encouraging. She’s pushed me to do things I didn’t think I could do and helped me grow as a person and a leader. My favorite experiences at LMC have come from the relationships I’ve built with my professors. When I’ve needed help, it’s always been there for me.”

Our History, Your Future

Founded over 100 years ago by Reverend Edgar Tufts, Lees-McRae College is a campus rich with history and natural beauty. Our original native stone buildings have become a Lees-McRae trademark and still serve as classroom buildings and residence halls. The LMC atmosphere is truly one of a kind, from Tufts Tower to Tate Lawn to our historic Mill Pond. We encourage you to visit and take part in the full Lees-McRae experience.

Lees-McRae College is a residential campus, spanning over 460 acres in a beautiful mountain valley.

Students are required to live on campus in one of our 11 residence halls, which include cottages, suites, apartments, houses, halls, and our Honors Cottage. Students living on campus enjoy many benefits like wireless internet, cable television, laundry facilities, student lounges, two workout facilities, and ample green space to enjoy the mountain air, explore, and study.

Want to bring a pet?

Can’t imagine leaving your beloved family pet at home? Bentley and Baldwin Residence Halls and all on-campus apartments and houses are now pet-friendly, housing students and more than 35 pets. One of a handful of pet-friendly campuses in the nation, Lees-McRae allows second year students to apply for a pet-friendly room.

Sacred Campus Traditions

Each year, Lees-McRae College honors the campus traditions of Mountain Day and Mountain Day of Service. In the fall, Lees-McRae students, faculty and staff celebrate Mountain Day, an opportunity for the entire campus community to come together and explore our beautiful surroundings. In the spring, Lees-McRae celebrates Mountain Day of Service, a day reserved for the campus community to complete a variety of service projects. Last year, students, faculty, and staff completed over 30 service projects on campus and throughout the Banner Elk community.
