The parks are places where we can relax, talk story, and enjoy the beauty of the Leeward Coast. Caring for these parks takes a combined, coordinated effort and that is why I am continuing to introduce new legislation and placing increased focus on initiatives to improve and sustain these key community areas. I recently introduced Resolution 15-9 requesting the City Administration set forth specific requirements for dedications of park improvements. As you know, it took the City more than half a year to open our new Ocean Pointe Park, which was constructed and ready to be opened early in 2014. This Resolution will help City departments, including the Department of Parks and Recreation, Depart- ment of Planning and Permitting, Department of Design and Construction and the Department of the Corporation Counsel create an efficient process for private developers to follow, when they build our public parks. My goal is for our city departments to have specific requirements and be actively involved from the start of planning in order to expedite park improvements so we can readily enjoy these public spaces. Another initiative I have underway is Bill 58 (2014), which will incentivize park adoptions and make it easier for organizations to donate their time and resources towards improving our parks. I believe that by having multiple businesses, organizations and groups in our community partner together, we can beautify and revitalize our parks without raising taxes for homeowners. While the City’s existing Adopt- a-Park program brings volunteers to help keep our parks clean, I believe that we as a community can do more for our parks that will develop these areas into culturally rich gathering spaces. organizations. The parks are places where we can relax, talk story, and enjoy the beauty of the Leeward

PRESCHOOL OPEN DOORS PROGRAM APPLICATION PERIOD BEGINNING SOON The Department of Human Services (DHS) will be accepting applications for its Preschool Open Doors (POD) program between March 1 and April 30, 2015. Applications received dur-
ing this period will be considered for preschool participation between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016. POD is a DHS child care subsidy program that provides statewide services to eligible low- and moderate-income families sending their children to a licensed preschool, prior to kindergarten entry. The goal of POD is to promote school readiness and to provide children with the opportunity to gain essential foundational skills they need to be successful in life.
