What does this have to do with drawing?

When you were little the left side of your brain needed to organize the world around you and came up with symbols for everything.

These are called schemas…

Over the years some of your schemas have gotten more complex, but they still do not represent exactly what you are seeing.

When you are drawing your brain struggles to draw the symbol your left brain has come up with, while the right side wants to draw what it actually sees.

Learning to draw means learning to make a mental shift from the Left mode to Right mode.

Upside down Drawing

• This activity will be a easier for those who are mostly Right Brained.

• Your left brain is the side that recognizes the image when it is right side up.

• Therefore when we draw an image upside down the left brain is shut off and the right brain gets to work viewing the image as lines and shapes instead of a person.

Choose one of these images you’d like to draw.

The image should be upside down at the top of your page.

Draw the image as you see it. (upside down)

Use Sighting-when you look at where something is in relation to something else.

Look at the shapes and spaces in-between items

Take your time and add all details.
