Richard M. Parison, Jr. is Hampton Arts new Artistic Director. He has been a professional theater director and producer for over 20 years, beginning his theatre career at Great Lakes Theater Festival in Cleveland, Ohio. He spent several years in Philadelphia as Associate to the Producing Artistic Director, at the Walnut Street Theatre

and then later as Acting Artistic Director for the Prince Music Theater. As a director, he is a multiple nominee for the Philadelphia Barrymore Award for Dreamgirls, The Glass Menagerie and The Big Bang. He most recently directed Fiddler on the Roof for Virginia Repertory Theatre, in Richmond, which received 10 nominations for the Richmond Critics Circle Awards, including Best Director. Richard is thrilled to join The American Theatre and The Charles H. Taylor Arts Center as Artistic Director. Look for him at the Theatre and the Arts Center.

The Who’s Tommy A Bluegrass Opry

Maybe not your standard bluegrass lyric, but a line known by all the world from the biggest rock opera of all time, The Who’s Tommy. 45 years after its original release, this classic of classic rock has now been fully realized as a full length bluegrass tribute featuring Springfield, Missouri’s The HillBenders. Conceived and produced by SXSW co-founder and longtime musician/producer Louis Jay Meyers, this Bluegrass Opry brings a new perspective to Tommy while paying total respect to its creators.

Originally composed by guitarist Pete Townshend as a rock opera that tells the story about a deaf, dumb and blind boy, including his experiences with life and the relationship with his family. The original album has sold 20 million copies and has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for “historical, artistic and significant value.”

With a perfect mix of virtuoso musicianship and rock star vocals, The HillBenders bring Pete Townshend’s original vision to life in a new and exciting way. It’s amazing to hear banjo, dobro, mandolin, bass, and guitar bring the same energy and vision to Tommy as The Who did with a full rock band and orchestra. The live performance is a full 75-minute show covering the original album from start to finish with special video accompaniment and audience participation. This performance is ‘based on a true story’, happening in Greenwich Village, New York, in the late months of 1958. The audience is present during Buddy’s band rehearsal as he prepares for the mid-western cavalcade of performers known as The Winter Dance Party of 1959. The stage vibe is intimate as Buddy’s dialogue is totally directed at the audience; the tone is conversational and responsive to questions raised during the pre-show warm-up.

As the story goes, Buddy and his young wife are expecting their first child but living on borrowed funds due to bad business dealings with his Texas-based management handlers. Although he has had eighteen months of nation-wide recording exposure and fame, and a very successful musical tour in England, Buddy wants to expand his inspirational efforts to include big band arrangements and movie sound

tracks. But the bills must be paid by contracting for the extended Dance Party tour. Buddy’s musical combo, The Crickets, opted to stay in Texas; therefore Buddy needs to rehearse his touring band.

That is the show’s premise which provides context for an evening of Holly favorites and those of the Everly Brothers and Little Richard. Are we joking? No, these artists were friends of Buddy and he pays tribute to these influences in the show. This unique format for a stage play is certain to give an inside look at a life which has been described as “eighteen months of fame and generations of influence”.

No one remembers when the neighbors started calling the McCutcheons to complain about the loud singing from young John’s bedroom. It didn’t seem to do much good, though. For, after a shaky, lopsided battle between piano lessons and baseball (he was a mediocre pianist and an all-star catcher), he had “found his voice” thanks to a cheap mail-order guitar and a used book of chords.

Celebrate the return of the blues legend that left American Theatre audiences last season begging for more? Yep, Eddie’s back! 2014 Blues Hall of Fame inductee, Eddie Shaw continues to build upon his unparalleled career as a Chicago blues saxophonist/bandleader in a city where guitar, harmonica and piano players have long ruled the roost. A multiple Blues Music Award winner and perpetual nominee in the Instrumentalist–Horn category, Shaw has blown his industrial-strength sax with the likes of Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and Magic Sam. And with his Wolf Gang he has racked up the most road mileage of all Chicago bands over the past four decades, crisscrossing the country from Maine, where his upbeat, high-energy blues is a particular favorite, to countless points south and west.

Looking back over the past 25 years of rootsy, string-based music, the impact of Leftover Salmon is impossible to deny. Formed in Boulder at the end of 1989, the Colorado slamgrass pioneers took their form of aggressive bluegrass to rock and roll bars at a time when it wasn’t so common, helping Salmon become a pillar of the jam band scene and unwitting architects of the jamgrass genre.

Though the lineup would change through the years, the foundation of Leftover Salmon remained strongly rooted in the relationship between co-founders Emmitt, Herman, and banjoist, Mark Vann, proceeding through a decade of constant growth and nonstop touring. In 2002, Vann lost his battle with cancer. He was only 39 years old. Herman issued in memoriam: “Mark lived life to its fullest and he would insist that we do so as well.” And so they have. In 2012 NPR’s Mountain Stage heralded the group as “one of the most beloved acts on America’s summer-festival circuit.”

High Country, the band’s latest album, slips seamlessly in and out of character, disposition and style offering the full palette of Leftover Salmon’s aesthetic, from lightening-powered pick n’ grin to thoughtful blues balladry and all in between. The record’s a classic, if we’ve ever heard one. At the focal point of this movement, and of this film, are the farmers and chefs who are creating a truly sustainable food system. Their collaborative work has resulted in great tasting food and an explosion of consumer awareness about the benefits of eating local.

A feature-length documentary, Ingredients illustrates how people around the country are working to revitalize that connection. Narrated by Bebe Neuwirth, the film takes us across the U.S. from the diversified farms of the Hudson River and Willamette Valleys to the urban food deserts of Harlem and to the kitchens of celebrated chefs Alice Waters, Peter Hoffman and Greg Higgins. Ingredients is a journey that reveals the people behind the movement to bring good food back to the table and health back to our communities.

Celebrating April as the month of The Bard (historians believe Shakespeare was born on April 23rd,1564, the same day he died in 1616), we present this classic film re-telling of one of Shakespeare’s most famous stories. Above and beyond the genius move of setting a modern Romeo and

Juliet among the gangs of 1960s New York, West Side Story is a perfect storm of theatrical and cinematic talent. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, with a screenplay by Ernest Lehman (the man who wrote North by Northwest!) and that immortal score by Sondheim and Bernstein, the movie pays tribute to Shakespeare by treating his 1590s tragedy as 20th-century melodrama — and creating a second masterpiece from the first. Some of the film’s elements haven’t aged as well as others (Natalie Wood is not Puerto Rican, and she never will be), but for sheer emotional sweep, few adaptations of the Bard can touch it. Don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like this movie. Just. Don’t.

Swiney are creating a full evening of multimedia dance theater collage. The performance is in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the writing of Dr. Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech for the famous March on Washington in 1963. By placing Dr. King’s very important speech to the performance setting, the two choreographers explore not just the meaning of the text, but create a fusion of contemporary movement with sounded oration, blurring the boundaries between the speech and dance performance.

Yoga Therapy with Dr. Dilip Sarkar AT THE AMERICAN THEATREDilip Sarkar is one of the foremost experts in Yoga Therapy who combines his 45-year experience in Conventional Medicine with his extensive knowledge of Integrative Medicine, including Ayurveda and Yoga Therapy. Students will enjoy Dr. Sarkar’s relaxing session of breath work and meditative motion. Classes take place in the Dance Studio of The American Theatre; no experience in yoga is required and students of all levels will be comfortable, as the poses are adaptable to provide the desired intensity. Students should provide their own yoga mats and wear comfortable clothing.

The Virginia Stage Company’s summer theater camp will be a fun, high-energy week-long program that allows young people to engage their imaginations and experience the thrill of creating live theatre. Campers participate in a wide variety of theatre activities — including improvisation, storytelling, creative writing, and mime — all taught by teaching artists and actors dedicated to meeting each child at his or her level. At the end of the week students will share their work in a free performance open to the public.

2016East Meets West: Art for Everyone AGES 8+Students will learn about western and eastern art, drawing and painting and the Mystic Arts of Tibet, as they complete several unique, colorful, paintings and crafts. This class will include observing the Tibetan Monks creating their sand mandala and participating in creating the community mandala. All materials included. PUSH COMEDY THEATERJunior Improv AGES 7–12Students will explore the key elements of both long and short form improvisation. The session concludes with the students performing in a graduation show on The American Theatre stage. The Pushers are Virginia’s premiere sketch and improv comedy group. Make time in your schedule for a week of reflection and inspiration. The monks will once again create a sand-painted mandala: used as a tool for re-consecrating the earth and its inhabitants. From all the artistic traditions of Tantric Buddhism, that of painting with colored sand ranks as one of the most unique and exquisite. In Tibetan this art is called dul-tson-kyil-khor, which literally means “mandala of colored powders.” Millions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid into place on a flat platform over a period of days. The sand mandala will be deconstructed during the closing ceremony, half the sand will be distributed to the audience, while the remainder is carried to a nearby body of water. The waters then carry the healing blessing of the deposited sand to the ocean, and from there it spreads throughout the world for planetary healing.
