As part of WNET’s ongoing commitment to exploring the experiences of our military servicemen and women, WLIW21 will highlight the stories of local veterans with Legacies of War: Coming Home (September 4 at 10:30pm) and Legacies of War: Vietnam (September 11 at 10:30pm). In Legacies of War: Coming Home, local veterans from different generations and branches share their stories of adjusting to civilian life after service. Legacies of War: Vietnam explores the war through the experiences of veterans from the New York tri-state area. We meet retired U.S. Army Colonel Jack Jacobs of Far Hills, New Jersey, who received a Medal of Honor for his actions during the Vietnam War. Edie McCoy Meeks, a Vietnam veteran from Beacon, New York, joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps after her brother was drafted and joined the Marines. Salvatore Scarlato, a Korean War veteran from Hauppauge, Long Island and the president of the New York State Korean War Veterans, has dedicated himself to supporting veterans of all eras. “The Active duty and Reserve veterans we interviewed brought to life the numerous challenges returning veterans face during their reintegration to civilian life, as well as the many ways they have grown and benefited from their service,” producer Marisa Wong said. Added producer Sasha Schechter, “Local organizations like NYC Veterans Alliance and Service Together really helped us understand the veteran landscape in our own backyard.” The documentaries are also being made available, at no cost, to PBS stations across the country through WNET’s new digital content sharing platform, Wavelength. By sharing more stories about veterans, the team hopes to inspire deeper understanding of the veteran experience and better support the returned and returning service members in our communities. T he tri-state region is home to more than 1.4 million veterans.

Two strong female leads bring their comedic chops for WLIW’s Friday lineup. In Marley’s Ghosts (above), Marley Wise tries to work, love, and, most importantly live, while sharing her life with three ghosts: her husband, her lover and the local vicar. In Miranda, it doesn’t matter what the titular character attempts in life, whether it’s dating or simply dealing with her overbearing mother, she always seems to fall flat, quite literally.

The film chronicles the real life story of the seismic

upheaval that rocked the western world in the early 1500s. Against all odds, a lonely outcast stood up to the world’s dominant superpower — the Catholic Church — and won. It was a battle of ideas that formed Western society as we know it today, sparking the rise of individualism, universal education, religious freedom and new roles for church and state.
