So this is what you got:

SharePoint 2003

SharePoint 2007

Where do you want to go?

Some facts:

Upgrade?

Or

Migrate?

SharePoint doesn’t support upgrading straight from 2003 or MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2013. You first have to go trough SharePoint 2007 - >2010.

SharePoint 2013 doesn’t support «In-Place upgrade». Which is a good thing!

SharePoint 2013 supports «database attach» which arrived with SharePoint 2010

SharePoint 2013 supports upgrade of some of the Service Applications

Upgrade or Migrate – that is the question!

What can be upgraded?

What can be upgraded? SharePoint Web applications/content

Custom Code

Service Applications

Search administration

Business Data Connectivity

Managed Metadata

PerformancePoint

Secure Store

User Profile (Profile, Social, and Sync databases)

What about upgrade from 2003 / 2007?

I have SharePoint 2003 / 2007… Should I skip 2010?

You can’t skip 2010, because SharePoint doesn’t support upgrading straight from 2003 or MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010

So what should you do instead…

Move Forward

Don’t Upgrade

Move Forward Migrate

So what about the migration..

We’re upgrading to a newer version of SharePoint

Why are we talking about migration?

We’re upgrading our hardware on prem, and also looking at the cloud

We can use this as an opportunity to clean up our IA and governance

How to migrate If you don’t want to go run trough every version of SharePoint to get to the last version, it’s plenty

migration tools that support migration from all the way back to 2003/2007.  Under i have linked some options (it’s many more), you need to look at the differences, and choose

the one which is right for you. This can change from project to project and the task you have in front of you.

Problem:

• Meeting workspace not supported in SharePoint 2013

Solution:

• Migrate content only, not all of the site.

• Recreate the list, calendar, workflow etc before you migrate, great step by step guide: http://tiny.cc/5mmzyx

This is your technical migration, i.e. the physical move of content and “bits”

This is the bulk of your migration – the planning,

reorganization, and transformation of your

deliver,we will go around them. “Business Lead

Don’t forget

What does that mean?

To migrate with success you need to involve the Business….

And you should always ask yourself, who wants the change: IT, or Business?

Wo did we forget?

The users!

What are the characteristics?

They are SATISFIED with the system they have.  IT WORKS

RESISTS CHANGES DON’T WANT THE NEW SYSTEM

How to solve thisInvolve the end users:

Testing

Training

Providing guidance and business process input

Get some super users

The more you involve people in the process, the more likely they are to accept the results

Before any migration project

Take a step back and look at the bigger picture

How to migrate1

3

Analyze the data

Migrate the data from SharePoint x to SharePoint 2013 /SharePoint Online

Enhance the new platform

4

Decide if you should create new site structure or recreate the old one

5

Decide which data to be migrated, don’t move stuff you don’t use

1. Analyze the data

2. Recreate your site structure

Get-SPWebApplication https://portal.contoso.com | Get-SPSite -Limit All | Get-SPWeb -Limit All | Select Title, URL, ID, ParentWebID | Export-CSV C:\sharepointinventory.csv -NoTypeInformation

3. What to migrateCreate an inventory over what to migrate.

5. Enhance the new platform

Lessons Learned

• A pre-migration analysis is a must at the beginning of the project

• Build your project plan based on what you find

• Perform a content and customization inventory

Key Takeaways Start with easy workloads Understand environment, custom solutions, site types, and what people are

actually using Minimize the volume you have to migrate Determine your governance strategy Define acceptable and target user experience prior to migrations starting Think through permissions model – security groups won’t include

calculated domain groups Scale migration process through best practices

Now you are ready to migrate your legacy systems If not you can always call me.
