Patna: The Magadh Universi-ty Teachers’ Association (MU-TA) served a legal notice to theState Election Commissionand the Patna district electionofficer-cum-district magistra-te on Monday in connectionwith the deployment of uni-versity and college teachersfor urban body election duty.

The legal notice pointedout the Patna high court (HC)had exempted teachers ofMagadh University from per-forming civic body electionduty in 2006. Therefore, theirdeployment for the electionduty this year will amount toviolation of the spirit of theHC judgment, said MUTApresident A K Singh Thakur.

MUTA advocate Sunil Ku-mar Singh referred to thejudgments of the cases be-aring numbers CWJC 7493/

2011, 2011 (2), PLJR 680, 4168/2007 , 4374/2009, 5524/2009,2009(2), PLJR 640 and CWJC5871/2006, which exemptedcollege teachers from perfor-

ming election duty. According to MUTA sour-

ces, most of the teachers ofthe city- based colleges havebeen made patrolling magist-

rate by the district election of-ficer for the civic body elec-tion to be held on June 4 and 7next month. Though these te-achers have already reportedfor their training, they are yetto get a final appointment let-ter for the duty.

It is feared that the evalua-tion work for the Degree PartIII honours examination, sla-ted to begin in June, will behampered if teachers go onelection duty.
