Section Individual Tourney RecapThe Scott west wrestling team

came into the 2015-16 season with the motto-theme Legend-ary! Arrive A Guest...Leave A Legend! This year’s team cer-tainly lived up to those words as it has continued to build on the legendary success that is Scott west wrestling – not only winning the Rumble on the Red Championships at the end of December, but most recently adding the program’s 16th Sec-tion 2AA team championship and now qualifying five indi-vidual state qualifiers at the Section 2AA Individual Tour-nament at Mankato East High School this past weekend.“we have had a couple of real-

ly good weekends of wrestling against the very talented Sec-tion 2AA field of wrestlers,” states Scott west co-head coach Darren Ripley. At the section tournament

this past friday and Saturday, five Panthers earned their indi-vidual opportunity to wrestle in this week’s state tournament by placing in the top two of their respective weight classes. It would be Scott west junior

lightweight Parker Huss lead-ing the way as the #3-rated 120-pounder blew away his section bracket as he pinned his way through the tournament with four. After winning the section title at 106 pounds last year, Huss was looking to go back-to-back in 2016 and to do that he had to win a rematch against St. Peter’s wyatt Gillette as they had met earlier in the year at a meet in Sibley East, with Huss winning a hard-fought 2-1 deci-sion on a late third-period take down. However, there would be no third period needed in this one on Saturday as Huss decked the Saint wrestler with an under-hook whip over, and when he drove Gillette to his back, Huss got the pin fall call at just 53 seconds of the first period.“Parker has been wrestling

with an aggressive and physi-cal style over the last couple of weeks and it shows in his re-sults,” states Ripley.Huss’ teammate, #2-rated

Jackson Stauffacher, will also be taking his attacking up tem-po wrestling to the mats of the state tournament as he went on to win his first section cham-pionship at 126 pounds. After advancing to the section finals for the third straight year with a third-period pin of Mankato East’s Shang Haley, Stauffach-er claimed his first section title by winning one of the feature matches of the tournament as he dominated #4-rated Hutchinson wrestler Brock Luthens, beating him for the second time in con-secutive weekends. Stauffacher was at the top of his game as he used a pair of nice leg attacks that the sophomore converted into take downs in periods one and three to go along with some good, hard riding to highlight his 5-0 championship perfor-mance.“Jackson was quick and explo-

sive with his leg attacks and that was good to see,” states Ripley. “He was also very tough on top and did not give his Hutch op-

ponent any easy points as he kept constant down and for-ward pressure on him from the top position.”Also finishing in the top posi-

tion at 145 pounds was Scott west senior captain and #2-rat-ed Ben Kelvington, who like his teammate, Huss, blew away his section bracket by pinning all four of his opponents on his way to his second section title, the first coming as a sophomore at 113 pounds. After secur-ing a second-period pin over Glencoe-Silver Lake senior Alex Mielke in the semifinals, Kelvington faced waconia up-start freshman Cade Mueller in the finals, and after building a 9-0 third-period lead, he used a powerful arm bar to drive Muel-ler to his back, where he would get the pin fall call at 5:24 of the third period. “Ben has been wrestling at a

really high level all year and it shows in his results,” states Ripley. “we hope to see him continue that high level of wres-tling at the state tournament.”Kelvington’s teammate, Ty-

ler Buesgens, will be making his first individual appearance at the state tournament as the sophomore came up with a gold medal performance in a deep 182-pound bracket. Buesgens’ title run did not come easy as he found himself on the bot-tom side of a third-period 3-1 score against New Prague’s Cameron Schmitz, who had hit him with a quick and slick slide by first-period take down. However, Buesgens would not give up as he kept the pressure on Schmitz, and although he could not get the match-tying take down, he did get two stall call points awarded to him by the referee as Schmitz repeat-edly retreated to the edge and off the mat. with the score 3-3, the two wrestlers were going to overtime for the second time in consecutive weeks, and in a flurry of action near the edge of the mat, it was Buesgens se-curing the 5-3 match-winning

take down. It was all Buesgens in his first section final as he struck gold by building a 9-0 third-period lead before using a cradle to pin Glencoe-Silver Lake’s #5-rated Nick Brejle.“we certainly think Tyler

earned those two stall call points in the semifinal match to send it into overtime, so good for the official for making the correct call from our perspec-tive,” claims Ripley. “with that one out of the way, Tyler was really tough in the finals and we will look for him to take that tough wrestling to the state tournament.”In what was almost a mini

state tournament in and of itself, probably the most highly antic-ipated Section 2AA Individual Tournament bracket match ups came at heavyweight, where you had the #3, #4 and #5 state-rated wrestlers all in the same bracket with hometown favorite #3 Logan Swanson of Mankato East, #4 Alex Burn of Tri-City united and #5 Josiah Schatz of Scott west. Swanson had placed fourth in the state as a sophomore but failed to qualify for last year’s state tournament as he was beaten by Burns and Jake filk of Hutchinson. Burns and Schatz were the two heavy-weight state qualifiers out of Section 2AA’s loaded field last year and Burns went on to place third ay state, while Schatz went on to place fifth. In Saturday’s semifinals,

Schatz and Burns matched up with Schatz looking for his first win over the Titan heavyweight throughout a series of match-es that they have wrestled. It would be Schatz scoring the first two points of the match as he won a leg scramble along the edge of the mat for the all-important opening take down. with Schatz clinging to a 3-2 lead late in the third period and

the plays and free throws at the end of the game. The effort was there, we just didn’t get the result we wanted,” said Tigers coach Paul fogarty.Mitchel Stier had another dou-

ble-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds for Belle Plaine. Luke Narveson added 18 points and seven rebounds. fogarty credited Derek Guscette with having “another solid outing off the bench.”
