Father Walter Ciszek, S.J.,

author of the best-selling He

gripping, astounding story of

his twenty-three years in

Russian prison camps in

Siberia, how he was falsely

imprisoned as an "American

daily life as a prisoner, and his

extraordinary faith in God and

commitment to his priestly vows

and vocation. He said Mass

under cover, in constant danger

of death. He heard confession

of hundreds who could have

118 God Came Near Chronicles of Christ Lucado Max

In this stunning work, Max

Lucado views the Savior who

walked among us through a

distinctly human lens. He

speaks plainly to those of us

who prefer to keep Jesus

otherworldly, distant, and

predictable: "Don't do it. For

heaven's sake, don't. Let Him

into the mire and muck of our

world. For only if we let him in

can he pull us out." Through

vivid word pictures, come with

Max as he brings to life the

most important event in

history…when God Came Near.

FICTION. The story line of this

book is simple. An overzealous

writer, Matt Lawrence,

remarked on the Carson Show

remarks that he could prove the

resurrection of the Christ was a

hoax if he could spend a week

in the time shortly after the

death of the Christ. That night

he wanted to form a version of

the Warren Commission and

prove his beliefs. Well as

stories go he got his chance

with a knockout punch from an

intruder he was transported

136 Loving Each OtherThe Challenge of Human

RelationshipsBuscaglia Leo

In this exploration of loving and

living, bestselling author Leo

Buscaglia addresses the

intricacies and challenges of

love relationships. He asks

such important questions, as:

How do we best interweave our

lives with our loved ones? Do

we change our way of relating

depending on the

circumstances: If we fail in one

relationship, can we succeed in

others? In this exhilarating

book, Leo doesn't give pat

answers. He presents

alternatives and suggests

behavior that opens the way to

truly loving each other. He

recalls with heartwarming detail

the importance of his own

family and friendships in

helping him to be open to grow

and to love.

154 The Everlasting Man Chesterton GK

Here is the book that converted

C. S. Lewis from atheism to

Christianity. This history of

mankind, Christ, and

Christianity is to some extent a

conscious rebuttal of H. G.

Wells' Outline of History, which

embraced both the evolutionary

origins of humanity and the

mortal humanity of Jesus.

Whereas Orthodoxy detailed

Chesterton's own spiritual

journey, this book illustrates

the spiritual journey of

humanity, or at least of Western

civilization. A book for both

mind and spirit.

sweetheart commits suicide.

He is sent to China where he

establishes a flourishing

Catholic mission amid

desperate poverty, civil war,

Cronin's best novel, The Keys

180 The Life of Our Lord Dickens Charles

Dickens approaches his

subject with simple reverence,

retelling the New Testament in

a manner suitable for his own

young children--who were, in

fact, his only intended

audience. Indeed, he strictly

forbade publication of The Life

during his lifetime and begged

his sister to make sure that

they "would never even hand the

manuscript, or a copy of it, to

anyone to take out of the

house." It wasn't until the death

of Dickens's last living son that

the manuscript was finally

published in 1934. Though he

left his trademark comedy

behind, Dickens's liberal

social conscience is still

evident in what he chooses to

emphasize about Jesus

147 Embraced by the Light Eadie Betty J.

Embraced by the Light is an

inspirational map of the afterlife

framed in the moment of

Eadie's death, and presents a

possible answer to the big

question, "Why are we here?"

An easy read, its subtitle could

have been "The Average

Person's Guide to Near-Death

Experiences." Although heavily

filtered through Eadie's

Christian worldview, her vision

of the afterlife does not include

a wrathful deity, but a figure of

love and compassion. Some

readers may find Eadie's

repeated Christian references

bothersome, and Embraced by

the Light will undoubtedly raise

a lot of questions along the

lines of "What about

reincarnation?" and "What

happens to people who are not

Christians?"

Bonhoeffer was born in 1906 in

Breslau, Germany. As a young

man, he found his vocation in

the church, and his theological

education took him to England,

Spain, and eventually New

York, where he spent a year in

post-doctoral studies at Union

Theological Seminary. He

returned to Germany imbued

with both the ideals of

ecumenicalism and of the

Church's responsibility to

participate in social and

political debate. These ideals,

unfortunately, were hardly

compatible with the rise of

Nazism in the Germany of the

'30s and '40s. Bonnhoeffer, true

to his beliefs, spoke out

against the Nazi regime, and

participated in Germany's small

Protestant resistance.

176 Jesus the Son of Man Gibran Kahlil

a striking fictional portrait of

Christ as seen through the eyes

of his contemporaries.

Depicting a variety of famous

eloquence that his admirers

hold so dear.

x

186 The Prophet Gibran Kahlil

In a distant, timeless place, a

mysterious prophet walks the

sands. At the moment of his

departure, he wishes to offer

the people gifts but possesses

nothing. The people gather

round, each asks a question of

the heart, and the man's

wisdom is his gift. It is Gibran's

gift to us, as well, for Gibran's

prophet is rivaled in his wisdom

only by the founders of the

world's great religions. On the

most basic topics--marriage,

children, friendship, work,

pleasure--his words have a

power and lucidity that in

another era would surely have

provoked the description

"divinely inspired." Free of

dogma, free of power structures

and metaphysics, consider

these poetic, moving aphorisms

a 20th-century supplement to

all sacred traditions--as

millions of other readers

already have.

158 White Smoke A novel of Papal Election Greeley Andrew M.

The Vatican and the New York

Times are just two of the

sacred cows milked for all

they're worth by Andrew M.

Greeley in White Smoke.

Greeley's starting point--the

openness and tolerance

espouse by Pope John XXIII in

1963 has, in the intervening

decades, been squashed by

more conservative forces.

Greeley's ending point: the

election of a liberal pope who is

not only a pro-feminist, but who

was once married. In between,

he skewers the New York

Times in the person of

correspondent Dennis Michael

Mulloy, a "typical Irish Catholic

journalist--magical with words,

a fall-down drunk, divorced,

fallen away from the church."

142 Two From GalileeA love story of Mary and

JosephHolmes Majorie

Here from Marjorie Holines,

one of the most beloved

authors of our day, is the

extraordinary bestselling novel

that tells the story of Mary and

Joseph as it has never been

told before--the greatest love

story of all. This is the story of

two real people whose lives

were touched by God: two

people chosen by God to

provide an earthly home for His

Son. Here are Mary and Joseph-

a teenage girl and a young

carpenter-alone, frightened, in

love, faced with family conflict,

a hostile world and an awesome

responsibility. It is a story for

young and old alike; for

everyone who finds the

Christmas tale a source of

timeless beauty and wonder, a

compassionate, emotional

novel of divine love.

278 The Reed of God Holselander Caryll

Houselander's beautiful and

profound mediation depicts the

intimately human side of Mary,

Mother of God, as an empty

reed waiting for God's music to

be played through her. She

shares her insightful and

beautiful vision of Mary on

earth, Mary among us, Mary as

a confused but trusting

teenager whose holiness

flowered with her eternal "Yes."

191 Power of the CrossReal Stories. Real People. A

Real God.Lahaye Tim

Many people think of the cross

as an image that represents

what Christ did for us in the

past. Yet best-selling author

Dr. Tim LaHaye says the cross

is vitally significant not just to

history, but to our lives today. In

this not-to-be-missed study,

readers will discover the

amazing method God has used

to prove His existence-the very

method He is using to reach the

world today. First God used

creation, then revelation, and

then Jesus Christ to reveal

Himself. Today He reveals

Himself by transforming lives-

the lives we live and the lives of

those around us. Every story of

transformation is unique, yet all

have one thing in common: the

transformation begins at the

foot of the cross.

Does healing happen today?

Why is there prejudice against

These topical and vital

questions are just some of the

issues addressed by Francis

MacNutt in Healing. A wide-

so central to the gospel,' writes

MacNutt, 'that it should be an

190 Catholic MattersConfusion, Controversy and

the Splendor of TruthNeuhaus Richard John

Here, Neuhaus challenges the

oft-heard statement, "Yes, I am

a Catholic, but I think for

myself," explaining how fidelity

to the church begins with

thinking for oneself so one can

think with the church. He

expands on this by exploring

the role of conscience, drawing

a distinction between doing

what one wants and discerning

and acting upon the truth.

Neuhaus also discusses the

church's authority, emphasizing

that it is never invoked to

require people to believe what

is false. Other topics include

the eerily prophetic Humanae

Vitae, the 1968 papal encyclical

on artificial contraception; the

loss of Catholic identity when

Friday abstinence from meat

faded from practice; and how

news reporting on the Second

Vatican Council shaped its

139 Our Lady of the Lost and FoundA novel of Mary faith and

friendshipSchoemperelein Dane

The action is chiefly cerebral

in this novel of a firmly

anchored everywoman who

endures a Marian vision of

Guinness-record-breaking

length. The narrator, one day

comes upon a modern-day

version of the Virgin Mary

standing in her living room.

Seeking a rest cure from her

spiritual duties, Mary asks if

she might be allowed to stay for

a few days. They spend time

together and become friends.

The writer anecdotally

contrasts their daily activities

with biographical sketches and

miracles relating to Mary

documented by the Catholic

Church. The result is a highly

intelligent and unique

discourse on philosophy and

the phenomenon of human faith,

but as a novel its appeal may

be limited to larger public and

academic libraries.
