Parent Involvement Center for the ArtsThe Impact of Tardiness on SchoolSchools stress the need for students to get to school and class on time and with good reason. Studies conducted by the U.S. Department of Education on truancy, which is connected with tardiness, show that school attendance is a major factor when it comes to school success and student behavior.

Problems with Tardiness:The most crucial learning hours of a school day are the morning hours, because they are when students are most attentive. Students who are tardy miss the beginning of their morning classes, and they also cause a distraction when arriving late.

Academics and Achievement:Students who are frequently tardy have lower GPA’s, lower scores on standardized assessments, and lower graduation rates. Chronic tardiness in elementary and middle school is also linked to failure in high school.

Behavior Problems:In the National Center for Education Statistics Indicators of School Crime and Safety, teachers surveyed reported that students who are frequently tardy have higher rates of suspension and other disciplinary measures. Tardiness causes students to feel disconnected with school, leading to behavior problems and dropouts. Students who are frequently tardy to school are also more apt to be fired from a job for showing up late.

Effect on Others:When students are tardy, they negatively impact their teachers and other students. Teachers are often required to allow tardy students to make up work, which often requires them to restructure their lessons or reteach missed material. Tardiness also takes other students’ attention away from a teacher’s lesson, leading to more behavior problems and missed instruction.

Early Sign-outs Can Send the Same Message:Although it may not seem like a big issue to sign your student out early to avoid the pick-up line, it causes a disruption in the busy afternoon office, interrupts the child’s classroom, takes away from the flow of your child’s day, and it unfair to other parents who follow procedures.References: national Center for Education Statistics: Indicators of School Safety Report: US Department of Education Truancy Report: US Department of Education: Manual to Combat Truancy.

The Lightning Regiment has been extremely busy over the past 60 days. The Lightning Drill Team competed in Sarasota, Tampa and at the Lee County District Championships. We also had Cadets tour the University of Tampa, University of South Florida and Fort Myers Technical College. Our Junior ROTC Leadership and Academic team and Cyber Patriot team also competed in district championships. In addition to this our cadets continued their community service

projects with Adopt A Road and organizing and hosting a blood drive here at Lehigh High School. Finally over 80 cadets enjoyed a fun day at Busch Gardens. I would like to thank Ms. Corey and the entire Lehigh family for your support. C/COL Marlene Boneta, Lightning Regimental Commander.

Blood Drive We are pleased to share with you that the recent blood drive resulted in 189 people donating, we collected 204 units of blood. Remember, each donation can save up to three lives so that means 612 patients could benefit from the lifesaving efforts of blood donors at Lehigh Senior High School.

The blood donated at the LSHS blood drive will likely be transfused into a patient within 48 to 72 hours. The turnaround is that fast, the need is constant. The next scheduled blood drive is 05/08/19 from 07:00 am to 01:30 pm at Lehigh Senior High School.

Adopt a RoadLehigh JROTC Cadets are responsible for maintaining Lee Blvd. from Sunshine to the Hospital and volunteer time to ensure their community remains clean. We average around 25-30 cadets and they work hard picking up trash and then end the morning with a stop at Dunkin Doughnuts

JLAB District ChampionshipThe Lightning JLAB Team competed in the Lee County District Academic Bowl, which was held at the Lee County School District. Both teams competing did an outstanding job by winning 1st Place in Leadership and 2nd Place in Academics.

Lisa Pauchey Drill MeetThe Lightning Regiment Drill Team competed at the Lisa Pauchey Drill Meet hosted by the University of Tampa. Our Mixed Male Color Guard Team took 2nd place, which is an outstanding finish as the best teams in the state all compete in this tournament.

Unified Basketball GameWe would like to thank LTC Walters and SFC Martin for their assistance in setting up the Integrated Basketball Games held here at Lehigh. These games consisted of players from the Lehigh boys’ and girls’ basketball teams and players from Lehigh’s Life Skills classes. These were exciting games and enjoyed by all. In addition thank you to the Lehigh Cheerleaders

and all the teachers who allowed your students to attend the games during class. This meant the world to many of these players.

Lee County School District Drill ChampionshipThe Lightning Regiment had an outstanding performance at the Lee County District Drill meet held on 23 Feb. at Fort Myers North High School. The Female Color Guard Team finished in 1st Place for the 3rd consecutive year. The team is commanded by Sawyer Phillips, and will compete in Lakeland Florida in April at the Florida State Drill Championships. In addition to these cadets Lehigh also placed 2nd in Female

Armed Exhibition, commanded by Suzett Brito, and will compete at the Florida State Championships. Unarmed Exhibition commanded by Diana Napoleon finished 2nd , Christopher Woo placed 2nd in the “Knock Out Drill”, and Marlene Boneta the Lightening Regimental Commander placed 4th in Individual Armed Exhibition. All members of the Lehigh Lightning Drill team performed admirably and represented the Lightning family with distinction.
