MESOTHELIOMA CHARITY SHOWOn Friday 6th March, the latest Charity Show for Mesothelioma in memory of Les Burrows was held at The Elms Social and Service Club. The show was superbly put together by Steve Sinatra and I’m pleased to say that it was packed out to the rafters and was a deserving success. Steve compered the show, keeping everything running smoothly, and the varied line-up was excellent. Young vocalist Kelly Jenns opened the show with a very energetic set backed up with a lovely voice and bubbly personality. Following her was the very popular singer Lesley who had everyone in stitches with her humourous banter in between the songs. There was an interesting duet with Steve for the song Save Your Love although I think I may have heard it somewhere else. Next up was a regular at the Elms, lounge singer Rick Wayne who had everyone singing along to his swing and Rat Pack selection.Local duo Nightshift are another popular act at The Elms and as always, Ritchie and Danny delivered an immaculate set to suit all tastes. Next up was the debut live showing of Rock ’n’ Roll band Hollie and The Dedications who rocked the house with lots of 50's and 60's classics already impressively having a huge following. Ending the show on a high were four piece live band Freddie who’s lead singer is Leicester’s Phil Voss. They have to be one of the best bands in the country and should be really successful as they are excellent singers and musicians. They enjoyed rapturous cheering with a full dance floor bringing the brilliant show to a magical end. Thanks go to Les and Kathy’s daughter Tracey for doing the door and Brian for selling raffle tickets, both worked really hard all night. I’m proud to announce that the total raised was £1,500 which was amazing, proving the generosity from everyone in attendance. A great night once again! Steve Rushin
JOHN LESTER 1953-2015Local singer and friend John Lester sadly passed away on 28th February 2015 following a very short illness. He’s left behind his loyal and lovely wife Elaine and his loving daughter Joanna. John lived near me in Wigston and I first got to know him as a member of Wigston R.B. L when he always got my Sunday night quiz questions right which earned my respect instantly. He then surprised me by asking me how to go about getting started on the club singing circuit, I didn’t even know he could sing. I told him to have at the very least 90 minutes worth of material, don’t do it until you’re ready and then book a spot in the shop window. He did all of those and appeared on a shop window at Thurmaston Progressive W.M.C. He impressed quite a few Ent. Secs. straight away with his confidence and variety. I remember giving him a booking (the first of many) at Wigston R.B.L. where he had to sing in front of his many friends which must have been nerve wracking but it didn’t show. From that , he never looked back being constantly busy putting himself about by doing showcases in lots of different areas. I enjoyed many good nights out with John and Elaine that will never be forgotten, always picking me up and dropping me off at my door. He was also very generous; never refusing to sing on Charity Shows which was deservedly recognised with an award for his Charity work at The Best Of Leicester. When he wasn’t out we used to enjoy some great Sunday nights at Oadby R.B.L. watching the singers who were booked there along with the Prize Bingo and the Cash Bingo. I didn’t bother with the Prize Bingo but John did, rarely leaving the club empty-handed. It’s such a shame that we’ve lost him and will be missed by lots of people. The latest Leicester singer to go in a short space of time! There’ll be some good songs sang upstairs, that’s for sure. Deep condolences to Elaine, Joanna and the rest of his family. Braunstone and District W.M.C.What a great afternoon of music. Thank you to all the artistes appearing, you made a good show great. They were Vicki Rosina f/v, Vinyl Revival grp, Darryl Antcliff (Dazzler), Chris Robins, who was joined by Hue (Soul Providers), Kimika duo, and Rachel Ball f/v. Hope you all get plenty of bookings! I would like to thank Braunstone and District for the great buffet you supplied for our guests from Worcester, Birmingham and ourselves; to Steve Rushin for being our compere for the afternoon, and the artistes who came to support the event, Lesley, Vinny, Paul Ravel and Nicola Lovell and last but not least Andy Brown for all his hard work behind the scenes.
OUT AND ABOUTWe’ve enjoyed some more great nights out to start 2015 off with plenty of superb entertainment enjoyment. Eyres Monsell WMC always has a high standard of top quality entertainment on and we’ve seen a brilliant male/female duo Groovy Nights, the outstanding male/female duo 2 To Go who went down really well, 80's male duo Electric Dreams, one of the best vocalists on the circuit Ruth Stanford and the always tremendous male/female duo Designer. If you’re stuck for somewhere to go wondering what the entertainment will be like, then Eyes Monsell is a very safe bet as the entertainment is of a high consistently crowd pleasing joy. At The Elms Social and Service Club, we’ve enjoyed two excellent nights with the local rock ‘n’ roll band, the exciting and talented The Del Sharrons and local male duo Nightshift, most enjoyable. More great nights at Saffron Lane WMC with vocalists Chris Robin in the concert room and Justin Lovell in the lounge for a change. We had a Sunday night out at Newfoundpool WMC.
