    100,000 Choices, 1 Solution

    Building Sustainability

Eco building is driving construction design to becomemore environmentally friendly with optimized thermalsolutions and solar shading for lesser use of air cool-ing. Sapa Building Systems product range includessolutions for both passive and active carbon emissionreduction. Elegance SC (Solar Control) combines areduced transmission of radiation with a lower solargain inside the building, reducing cooling needs andresulting in a more carbon efficient building. Doubleskin faades can also contribute significantly to thisgoal by providing natural ventilation.Sapa Building Systems building integrated photo-voltaic solution transforms the building envelope intoan active skin generating electricity. Furthermore, alu-minium and glass can be endlessly recycled withoutdegradation of physical properties.

    Sa ety

Public safety may require the restriction and moni-toring of access to building premises. Sapa BuildingSystem offers an Access Monitoring System that al-lows for example, access permission with the useof a card, a fingerprint or both. Emergency exits arefitted with panic bars. Windows are fitted wi th safetyhardware to guard against accidental falls and impactwith open or moving panes.

    Security

The disruption and cost associated with poor securityis a major issue for building operators and users.Sapa Building Systems windows and doors offer thefirst line of protection. We appreciate that differentareas of public sites may need differing levels ofprotection. Our fully suited systems offer completeflexibility so that you can build in the levels of se-curity that you need without compromise or costlyover-specification. Sapa Building System offers a fullrange of solutions from fire, through anti-burglary toblast resistance.

    Project: Grand BazarArchitect: Bureau Audeux

    Grand Bazar

    Lige, Belgium

The Grand Bazar is extremely well situated overlook-ing the place Saint-Lambert in Lige. Its impressivefaade dominates the streetscape and is an impor-tant part of the heritage of this lively city. True to theoriginal design concept the faade is adorned withgold leaf motifs.

Originally the building was home to a mix of com-mercial units with residential apartments. Thecommercial and residential use of the building aswell as the detailed decoration of the faade wouldall be maintained following the buildings renovation. The open shopping complex is brought together bya glass-roofed gallery which is designed to attractpassing pedestrian traffic into the shopping area. Inorder to retain the variety of the existing windows, narrow window units were used, with their largedimensions requiring robust window frames. Thearchitects selected Excellence 65, Sapa BuildingSystems aluminium, thermally-broken, three cham-ber system.

Just as with other renovation projects, the mainchallenge consisted in finding an effective answerto the thermal performance problems. This led toa solution whereby the aluminium window unit isfitted into a metal frame while avoiding the creationof cold bridges. The architects chose a restrained

green finish, which offers a subtle alternative to thelouder colours of the original windows.

    Fuschl Seebad

    Fuschl am See, Austria

The Fuschl Lakeside Spa holiday resort wishedto offer its visitors more than just fun in the water. Therefore it was necessary to renovate and expandthe existing resort, adding numerous wellnessfacilities for visitors to enjoy all year long, rain orshine, snow or hail. Thus the importance of awindproof and waterproof central hall, complete withswimming pool.

The ideal environment for visitors to relax requiredperfect thermal insulation. Thus it was logical that thedesigners of the renovated resort would choose theExcellence 75 SI (Super Insulated) Sapa BuildingSystem profiles.

In addition to 850 m of curtain walls and well-insulated windows, fire resistant windows were alsoused for reasons of safety and to minimise risks. The E52 curtain wall ensures that visitors can fullyenjoy the magnificent mountain view around lakeFuschlsee any time of the year.

The cost of the material was almost as important asits insulation characteristics, the service provided, andthe short delivery lead time. From that standpoint, too, Sapa Building System was the natural choice.

The schedule for the project was very tight. Thanks to

its advanced supply chain and meticulous planning,Sapa Building System was the one supplier who wasable to fill all orders within the stipulated deadline.

The architect wanted to take maximum advantage ofsunlight and natural light and searched for a systemthat would allow the easy integration of large glassareas. The Sapa Building Systems Elegance 52series turned out to be the most suitable becauseit offered, among other things, a great variety ofdesigns.

The designers developed a remarkably lightweightload-bearing structure (52 mm) that was perfectlycalibrated for the wind load and the weight of theglass.

A purposeful use of sun- and daylight yieldedsubstantial energy savings, while being extraordinarilyfriendly to the environment. Sapa Building Systemand its partners are proud to have had theopportunity to collaborate on such environment-friendly projects.

For the Kursaal in Ostend Sapa designeda curtain walling system that is windproof,

waterproof and corrosion resistant. Inaddition, the window profiles closelyresemble the original structuresguaranteeing optimum thermal insulation.

    Active faade

The original 1948 active gable consisted of twosingle-pane glass partitions, with an adjustablesunshade mounted between them. The controlof this sunshade, including the lamellae, was fullyrestored, and a double glazing chosen for the outershell. The single-pane-glass side wall had remainedin fairly good condition and only required somerepair.

In the process, extra attention had to be paid toacoustic insulation, since noise from the wind andthe sea can easily reach 53 dB. A lot of attentionwas paid to this in the original design. The concert

hall for example had been provided with an acousticsystem consisting of adjustable baffles, which couldcalibrate the echo of the hall to song, or opera ororchestral performances. However, because of theincreased size of the concert hall, the old systemwas no longer adequate and a completely variableacoustics system was built in.

    Genve, Switzerland

The new MParc shopping mall with an area of circa3 hectares was built in La Praille, Switzerland, rightnext to Carouge on the outskirts of Geneva. Hereshoppers can find DIY products, g arden tools andsupplies, furniture, electrical and electronic goods. The floor plan of the building is 160 by 60 meters, and its height is 11 meters. In addition to theshopping space, it also houses a restaurant, a bankoffice and some independent speciality shops. A1500 m 2 of glass-enclosed atrium was built ontothe main building.

The shopping centre is an example of modern steelconstruction technology: the front and the two sidesconsist of Sapa Building System curtain walls, whilethe back of the building is dedicated to loading docksfor trains and trucks.

The elegant sloping roof protects the buildingagainst the heat of direct sunlight. The three curtainwalls allow ample natural light into the shoppingspace, and thanks to the curtain walls excellentinsulating properties, the building does not needair conditioning. All of this naturally made both theconstruction and the use of the shopping mall budgetfriendly.

Lkerol Arena is an indoor sporting arena locatedin Gvle, Sweden. As it was designed to welcome8,265 hockey fans one day and a concert audienceof 11,000 the next, it had to be considerably morecomfortable and flexible than the old ice hockeystadium it replaces. The imposing buildings largeglass faades at the entrances and on other partsof the exterior, give an impression of openness toits surroundings.

To achieve the required thermal insulationperformances, the architect selected Sapa Building

Systems SFB 1074 window system. The 74 mmdeep sections were insulated with 30 mm glass fibrereinforced polyamide strips which provide very goodinsulation.

For one faade he chose Sapa Building Systemswell-tried SFB 4150 series which perfectly met thehigh functional requirements of the project. For thesecond faade he used the SFB 3074 partitionsystems which were combined with the SFB 2074insulated door system. Again, all sections wereinsulated with glass fibre reinforced polyamide strips.

Sapa Building systems curtain walling solutions wereused for both the vertical and sloped roof glazing atthis major retail development in the West Midlands, which is currently owned and operated by Westfield.

The 3000m 2 of roof glazing presented significantchallenges. The installation was carried out usinga crane and suction glass handling equipment, andthe 12m length of the rafters meant that a specialtechnique had to be jointly developed by ParryBowen and Sapa Building System to join the 6mextrusions. Because of the inaccessibility of the roof

glazing the watertightness of the roof was critical.Since the installation in 1996, the roof glazing hasremained watertight in all weathers.

The water park was re-openedin 2004 following an elaborate reconstruction of thecovered swimming pool and accompanying pavilionwith water attractions.

High performance thermal insulation was of criticalimportance for the project. Consequently, the archi-

The design of a sports centre of this signi canceneeds to be thoroughly thought-out in terms of safety. This is why the architects, among many other meas-ures, decided to implement re-rated SFB TH 74EI solutions.
