Are you a Wise Owl or a Head-Burying Ostrich when it comes to that d-word?

IF you're an Ostrich, you prefer not to think about the inevitable. Being an Ostrich means trusting the fortunes of your loved ones to chance, once you've gone, and having no control over what happens to your possessions and who should benefit from them.TO an ostrich, death is a five-letter word and a load of stigma.

IF, however, you're a wise owl, you take the time to think, question, and act in order to write a will, and take steps to protect your loved ones, when you're gone.

WHY BOTHER MAKING A WILL? MY FAMILY WILL GET EVERYTHING WHEN I DIE! WON'T THEY?

WRITING a Will may be something you've been thinking about for many years. The reasons for having a Will are many, but, if for no other reason, a Will makes life a lot easier for those you leave behind at a time of sorrow. If you die without a Will (Intestate), your family has to sort out many administrative items and are obliged to the decisions made by law as to who inherits what, decisions you should have really made by writing a Will.

AS to when you should write a Will, the answer is NOW. There may be plenty of life in you yet, but accidents and illness have absolutely no respect for age. Also, bear in mind that a modern Will is written in such a way that it shouldn't need much changing, so it's not something you have to think about often, but only in the event of a major change in circumstances, such as marriage,

birth of a first child or divorce.

SO, why do many people put off the task of writing a Will?

EXCUSES: there are many excuses for putting off writing a Will. Here are the most common ones:

1. "WRITING A WILL IS TEMPTING FATE": One in three adults in Britain have already written a Will - so, if writing one has fatal results, the population would soon be reduced by 18 million people! In fact, the British annual death-rate is surprisingly stable and definitely bears no relation to the number of people who write Wills.

2. "I'VE GOT NOTHING TO LEAVE": Everyybody leaves something. It may not be much, but, surely, that's even more

SKY TV has agreed to a simpler and lower pricing-deal for clubs. The new agreement has been developed in partnership with the clubs' umbrella-group, CORCA, the largest member of which is the CIU (Club and Institute Union), and means that prices start from as little as £100 per month, coming with a simplified structure and packages better-suited to meet clubs' needs.

Said Chairman, Philip Smith: "CORCA has been in regular dialogue with Sky to discuss the needs and concerns of members and to continue to press for a fee-structure and service, which better meets the needs of clubs throughout Britain.

"This is an issue on which we have been active and the announcement of this new pricing-structure is great news for all CIU-affiliated clubs."

Sky has a brace of packages for clubs, with prices still based on rateable value.

The Sky Base package includes Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 3 and Sky Sports News and news, music, variety and other sports channels.

For comprehensive sports coverage, Sky Ultimate includes everything in the Sky Base package, as well as Sky Sports 2, Sky Sports 4 and, importantly, ESPN - ensuring coverage of all televised Premier League games.

Commented Iain Holden, Managing Director of Sky Business: "We are committed to giving our customers great value-for-money while helping them grow their businesses.

"Working with CORCA, we have created a new agreement which creates a pricing-structure more suited for clubs' needs.

"The year ahead will be the best ever for live sport on Sky with more football, cricket and

rugby than ever before, all in HD, and more

stunning 3D on Europe's leading 3D sports service.

"And, of course, Sky Sports becomes the new home of

Formula 1 from next season."

Clubs wishing to take up the new Clubs UK Agreement

or who would like any further information on Sky TV and WiFi

options available can call Sky Business on 08442 411 6032.

On the 'down-side', Sky and the Premier League are clamping down on clubs and pubs showing matches with foreign decoders after a High Court judgment found that the venues may infringe the Premier League's copywright, when showing overseas broadcasts in their premises.

One pub landlord in Essex was recently ordered to pay more than £19,000 in fines and costs for showing matches via Sky Sports without a commercial viewing-agreement, while one distributor of foreign boxes and cards, Euroview, has suspended trading.

IN fact, everyone will be feeling fine at Baddeley Green Workingmen's Club on Friday, July 13th!

For, brilliant, chart-topping Herman's Hermits - formed in Manchester in 1963, and now comprising Barry Whitwam (drums), Geoff Foot (lead singer and bass guitar), Kevan Lingard (keyboards and vocals) and Simon Van Downham (guitar) - will be in Stoke-on-Trent that night.

In 1965 and 1966, the group rivalled The Beatles in the charts and was the top-selling pop-act in the USA in 1965,

thanks to such hit-songs as 'Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter', 'No Milk Today', There's A Kind Of

Hush All Over The World', 'Silhouettes', 'Can't You Hear My Heartbeat?', 'Dandy', 'Wonderful World' and, of course, 'I'm Into

Something Good'.

Tickets for the performance by Herman's Hermits are priced at £7 and, as with all Friday night shows, are on sale behind the bar at least two months in advance (not that Baddeley WMC is not open in the daytime on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays).

Transformed Bar enjoys Bank Holiday Weekend unveiling

THIS year's May Bank Holiday Weekend sees members of Smallthorne Victory Club in appropriately 'triumphant' mode!

For, the Stoke-on-Trent venue is celebrating the latest stage of its remarkable renaissance, with the 'Grand Opening' of its totally-refurbished Bar.

On Sunday, May 6th, the live entertainment will be provided by top band, Heroes, who will be performing against a back-screen, projecting images of the pop and rock stars (such as Rod Stewart, The Beatles etc.) whose hits they are playing.

Entertaining members and bona fide guests on Saturday, May 5th, are Girls on Film.

Moreover, the celebrations will be lubricated by terrific reductions in the price

of beer and spirits (just £2 for a pint and only £1 per 'short')!

"It really is a complete 'refurb', because everything in the Bar is new," said Club Secretary, Ian Machin.

"There's new seating and other furniture, bar-fittings, a dropped ceiling and wooden and carpeted floors, and, of course, the room has been totally redecorated.

"The club has used local contractor, Gary Machin, and he's done a top-class job for us."

Smallthorne Victory Club was on the verge of closing during the period of December, 2008-January, 2009, but the hard work of its management committee and the loyal support shown by members has ensured that it is now in a strong position financially - as the new Bar's official opening illustrates perfectly!

"THEY lifted the roof off," enthused The Sunday Times about Britain's premier Count Basie tribute orchestra, which will be performing at Newcastle's New Vic Theatre in May!

Voted 'Best British Big Band' at British Jazz Awards 2005-06 and 2008-10, the Back to Basie Orchestra is dedicated to capturing the sound and spirit of the legendary 'Swingin' Machine' - Count Basie's great orchestra of the 1950s and '60s.

Directed by trumpet-player,

Paul Lacey, with leading session musicians and jazz soloists, the orchestra features award-winning singer, Jacqui Hicks.

The orchestra is appearing at the New Vic (as part of Newcastle-under-Lyme Music Festival 2012) on Wednesday, May 30th, at 7.30pm.

Tickets (priced at £17.50 and £19.50) are available from the Box Office on (01782) 717962 or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

Visit Loraine & Martin's 'gem'!THERE'S nothing 'average' about this

famous, landmark hostelry in the 'Hidden Treasure of South Cheshire'!

Located in the heart of historic Nantwich, The Red Cow is a classic, traditional English pub (it is a 15th century, Grade I listed building), which simply exudes bona fide 'olde worlde' charm.

Behind its 'magpie', black-and-white timbered exterior, readers will discover original, oak-beamed ceilings, welcoming lounges, main dining-room (seating 26) and a superb function room (formerly part of Nantwich's 'Old Court House' and boasting its own private bar and entrance, plus dancefloor).

Outside, there is a heated patio-area (with seating for 24 diners) and a capacious, award-winning and secure beer-garden, which, complete with benches (seating approximately 26), children's play-area and pets to delight youngsters, is, understandably a popular attraction during the summer months.

Loraine and Martin, who celebrated their fifth anniversary as 'mine hosts' in February, offer discerning diners top-quality, traditional, home-cooked food (freshly-prepared and using locally-produced ingredients, wherever possible) at lunchtime (12 noon-2pm, Tuesday-Friday, & 12 noon-3pm, Saturday & Sunday) and during the evening (6pm-9pm, Tuesday-Saturday).

The Beam Street venue's acclaimed featured offer (its 'Lunchtime Special', comprising all mains at £5.45 and two courses for £7.95) is available from Tuesday to Saturday.

Diners have a choice between the main menu and a bar snack menu, while their 'signature' dishes include Steak & Robinson's Ale Pie and Oxtail Stew.

Naturally, the excellence of the culinary fare is complemented by a good choice of wines, whilst the choice of spirits includes a selection of specialist brandies and whiskies.

At the same time, 'real ale' aficionados can choose from a fine selection of traditional, cask-conditioned beers (including monthly-changing 'guests' and seasonal ones) from the portfolio of

Stockport-based brewer, Frederic Robinson Ltd.

Indeed, Martin and Loraine are recipients of the 'Casque Marque' accreditation accolade, which recognises and promotes pubs that serve great cask beers, following an unannounced, 'top-to-bottom' inspection by a qualified assessor from the national body.

"We have also added Peroni Italian lager and Veltins German Pilsner to our drinks selection," said Loraine.

5th Stafford Beer Festival announced!

ALL 'real ale' aficionados will be delighted to hear that Heart of Staffordshire CAMRA is staging its 5th Stafford Beer Festival this year!

Once again, it will be housed in the Sports Hall of Blessed William Howard School, Rowley Avenue (just 500 yards from Stafford Railway Station), in Staffordshire's county town.

"Our festival is a great opportunity to sample drinks from around the country," said Mike Harker, Branch Secretary of Heart of Staffordshire CAMRA, adding: "There will be a great selection of real ale, cider, perry and country wine.

"Entertainment is planned for most of the sessions, and we hope to allow free admission on Saturday evening!"

The aim of CAMRA (Campaign for Real

Ale), which celebrated its 40th birthday in March, 2011, is to improve quality and choice, while supporting pubs and protecting consumers' rights, some difficult to achieve in our current economic climate.

The 5th Stafford Beer Festival runs from Thursday, August 2nd, to Saturday, August 4th, and further information is available from Mike Harker on 07717-473935 or by visiting the website: www.heartofstaffordshirecamra.org.uk

Prize-winner, Mike, brewing at Slater'sONE man particularly looking forward

to the 5th Stafford Beer Festival is Mike Bird (pictured above), who was the winning bidder at last year's 4th event!

"Mike was successful in our 'silent auction', winning the prize kindly donated by Slater's Brewery," said Branch Secretary, Mike Harker.

Living in Abingdon, south of Oxford, he is a visitor to many CAMRA beer festivals, and attended the local branch's 2nd, 3rd and 4th festivals.

Mike also owns a house in Birmingham, making it easy for him to travel around the Midlands festivals.

"He is a particular fan of locally-produced beers, and was delighted to win the opportunity to brew a beer," commented Mike Harker, adding: "Mike says: 'Silent auctions are a great idea - a chance to win something money cannot buy!'

"He was brought up, drinking Ansell's and M&B Milds."

A 'peal' of applause for Gary & team!!

THIS historic, Staffordshire hostelry has just received what can only be termed a 'ringing endorsement'!

For, Thursday, April 5th, saw Gary Lawrence, licensee of The Bell At Eccleshall, presented with his 'Pub of the Month' trophy and certificate by Neil Butler, Chairman of the Heart of Staffordshire Branch of CAMRA.

"Since the last award for 'Pub of the Month' in September, 2009, The Bell has built on the foundations laid, and has flourished," writes Neil in the branch's newsletter, 'Beer at Heart'.

"The landscaped garden originally mentioned has now matured and become a well-established, peaceful drinking-area."

The main bar at the popular, High Street venue has been extended, creating a more efficient serving-area, and other improvements include a new floor.

Most importantly for 'real ale' aficionados, the provision of three, more hand-pulls means that there are now SEVEN, regularly-changing traditional, cask-conditioned beers from such breweries as Titanic, Holden's and Joules IPA (the last having become a firm favourite here), and the addition of Stowford Press to The Bell's cider-range has also boosted choice.

As well as being a 'Titanic Blue Riband Holder' and acclaimed as an 'Inn of Excellence', Gary recently scored 100% in his SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers) Audit, and the pub is, of course, 'Casque Marque'-accredited.

A former coaching inn on the London-Chester mail-route, dating back to the 18th century, The Bell is also acclaimed for its home-cooked food (using carefully-selected, locally-sourced produce), which is available at lunchtime (11am-3pm,Monday-Saturday), while lovers of the traditional Sunday lunch can enjoy a superb repast, served from 12 noon to 4pm.

Live entertainment is offered on Sunday evenings, and other attractions include its Poker and Quiz Nights on (respectively) Tuesday and Thursday.

More than £6,000 (and rising) has been raised for the pub's sponsored charity, Ronald

MacDonald House, which creates a 'home-from-home' for parents and families, whilst their offspring are undergoing treatment in Birmingham Children's Hospital, and a room in it is to be named 'The Eccleshall Room', recognising the area's support.

In 2008, The Bell was acquired by its current owner, The Cedar Pub Company, which has preserved and enhanced many of its original features, creating a genuine community pub for all.

reason to make sure it goes to those you care about? Also, it is not just making sure your worldly goods go to the right people. As mentioned, a Will can mean a lot less inconvenience for those left to sort things out.

3. "I JUST HAVEN'T GOT ROUND TO IT": This is normally because the job doesn't rate high enough on your list of priorities. If the roof leaks, no matter what you're doing or how tight your finances, you get it fixed fast! We can honestly say that the vast majority of clients feel great after we have written their Wills.

We often receive comments, such as "What a relief" or "I've put it off for years, but, at last, I can rest easy."

THE ALTERNATIVE

IF you die without a Will, all your money and possessions (your Estate) will be distributed, according to strict legal rules and regulations. These rules are called the Laws of Intestacy. In many cases, the Intestacy Laws distribute an Estate in a way the deceased would not have wanted, sometimes with disastrous results.

Your circumstances will fall into one of the following categories: Married, Cohabiting and Single.

Many complexities can arise, and we shall cover these in full detail (as well as dispelling many unfounded, but popular, beliefs about them) in the June issue of LEISURE GAZETTE.

One woman and three men"I SHOULDN'T mind being a bride - if I

could be one without having a husband."The words of Bathsheba Everdene,

the fascinating heroine of 'Far From The Madding Crowd', Thomas Hardy's fourth novel (published in 1874) and his first, major literary success, the latest novel to be adapted for the stage of the New Victoria Theatre.

Wild, wilful and fiercely independent, beautiful Bathsheba is determined to be her own woman.

However, when she attracts the competing attentions of three, very different men - steadfast (but luckless) young shepherd, Gabriel Oak; rich, handsome (but lonely and repressed) farmer, William Boldwood; and the rakish, handsome (but faithless) dragoon, Sergeant Francis Troy - she finds herself making a choice.

In Hardy's unforgettable story of one woman, three men, madness, murder and revenge, Bathsheba's fateful decision

sets in motion a dramatic chain of events which will change their lives forever.

Following her acclaimed and hugely-imaginative stagings of Charles Dickens's 'Great Expectations' and 'Bleak House', New Vic Artistic Director, Theresa Heskins's, ingenious, new adaptation will fill the theatre-in-the-round's stage with fire, rain, original music, original music by Mary Keith and all the vivid life and laughter of a great novel.

The Guardian lauded her adapation of 'Bleak House' as "inspired", while The Stage enthused that it was "wonderfully created...ingeniously staged."

'Far From The Madding Crowd' runs from Friday, May 18th, to Saturday, June 9th, at 7.30pm, with 2.15pm matinee performances on Saturdays, June 2nd and 9th.

Tickets (priced at £10.50-£19.50, with group-discounts of £2 for parties of ten or more; £2 concessions; and under-26s Go Free) can be purchased from the New Vic Box Office on (01782) 717962 or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

Key questions for parentsIT is a fact that all day nurseries have

to be registered with their local authority's Social Services Department, and must satisfy strict requirements, concerning ratios of staff to children; space per child; and numbers of qualified staff.

In essence, there are two main questions that parents want answered: first, will your child be looked after by regular, full-time staff, and, second, does the nursery offer a stimulating environment?

Preparing youngsters for entry into primary school is the task which day nurseries are allocated by society, and, needless to say, it is a very demanding one.

It is the paramount aim of day nurseries to provide a happy, family environment in which each child is encouraged to grow and develop in every way.

In addition to instructing pre-schoolers in each aspect of the educational curriculum, they must offer facilities which have been designed with every consideration of child-safety in mind!

Research shows that the adult-to-child ratio is an essential factor in determining the success of nursery education.

'OUTSTANDING' accolade from Ofsted is well-deservedTHE excellent grade of 'Outstanding', following an Ofsted inspection in November, 2011, has further enhanced this well-established day nursery's reputation. The environment at Burslem Day Care Nursery, Burslem, is superbly organised and resourced, in order to provide inspiration and a challenge to each and every child at this Burslem-based business. Here, children are making rapid progress in their learning, but, most importantly, their journey in this delightful setting is highly exciting. The setting is equipped with an abundance of high-quality toys, which help to raise

awareness of diversity, ensuring the inclusion of all children's interests.Highly-motivated, pro-active and inspiring leadership at the day nursery has created an amazing turnaround in the outcomes for children since the previous inspection by Ofsted."Relationships between parents and the team are warm, friendly, open and honest," explained sole proprietor, Irene, who founded the day nursery in 1990."Parental involvement in children's learning is positively encouraged from the beginning."

Live to ride - ride to live!!

WHETHER you have been riding for a long time or are just enjoying your first 125cc bike, we all know that it can be risky on the roads! To help readers stay safe, here are some thought-provoking facts and tips which will help you avoid an accident. The facts don't lie, and, whilst motorcyclists account for just 1% road-users, they, unfortunately, accounted for 18% of road-fatalities in 2005.Additionally, 65% of all motorcycle-accidents involving a car happen at T-junctions.What is the meaning of all this? Well, it means that expecting car-drivers to see you WON'T save your life, but perfecting your skills and changing the way you ride COULD!

Five Top Riding-Tips1. Anticipation: it sounds simple and it is. True, it is easy switch off while you're riding, especially when the roads are a little quieter - always keep an eye out for the unexpected.

2. Watch your speed. We're not talking about crawling along at 5 miles an hour, where would the fun be in that? Just make sure that you ride at a speed which gives you enough time to react (especially when it's wet, foggy or icy).

3. Positioning: when you're on the roads, it is crucial that you are seen at all times; accordingly, position yourself in the middle of the lane so that cars can see you.

4. Overtaking: it's one of the most satisfying things that you can do on your bike, especially in heavy traffic, but make sure that you always look over your

5. Be seen: even in good light, dipped-headlights can help you to get spotted (if your bike was built or sold after 2002, you will have dipped-headlights, so check that your bike does, too).Improve your skills: improve your oddsThe better your riding-skills, the better chance you have of avoiding an accident. These organisations will help you

perfect the way to ride: the Driving Standards Agency, Motorcycle Rider Training, British Motorcycle Federation, Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and the Police's 'Bike Safe' Programme.

Give your bike the love it deserves, and it will help you to stay safe on the roads.Spending your weekends polishing and cleaning your bike to within an inch of its life may be a boring chore, but, if you look after your bike, it REALLY will look after you!

Scorching story of a lonerA UNIQUE portrait of teenage-life, drawn with startling and

refreshing honesty, is being revealed at the New Vic Theatre, Newcastle.

In Deborah Gearing's 'Burn', a group of friends who hang out up and down the river, tell the story of Birdman's dramatic last day.

Fifteen-years-old, with no family and no friends, he is a loner - with nothing to lose!

When his social worker says he is being moved to a new home in a city far away, Birdman swears that he won't go.

Then, he asks a girl out on an ill-fated date...

'Burn' "...achieves serious

pathos and intensity'; you watch the leading characters with compassion, curiosity and concern. Enthralling," enthused The Financial Times.

This New Vic Youth Theatre production was first performed as part of the Royal National Theatre's Shell Connections Festival, and can be enjoyed locally at the Basford theatre-in-the-round on Friday, May 4th, and Saturday, May 5th, at 7.30pm.

Tickets are priced at £6.50 (£2 discount for concessionaries), and are available from the New Vic Box Office on (01782) 717962 or online at www.newvictheatre.org.ukor via [email protected]

It's the Jo & Henning Show!

NEWCASTLE'S New Vic Theatre is hosting a terrific comedy-bill, when Jo Caulfield and Henning Wehn appear on Wednesday, May 23rd!

Lauded as "one of the finest female comic at work" by The Observer, Jo Caulfield is well-known as a star of Michael McIntyre's Road Show, Have I Got News For You, Mock The Week and her own Radio 4 show, That Jo Caulfield Again!, to

name but a few. What's more, she writes

for some of the biggest names in the business, including Graham Norton, Joan Rivers and Marcus Brigstocke.

"Do not miss her," recommended The Times.

Jo is joined by the man called "Germany's comedy ambassador", Henning Wehn.

Those readers who are convinced that Germans have no sense

of humour will be proved wrong by the star of his own Radio 2 show, Henning Knows Best, and a regular on such radio and television shows as The Now Show, The News Quiz, Out to

Lunch, The Unbelievable Truth, QI and Dave's One Night Stand.

The Stage praised his unique comedy as "brilliantly conceived", while The Guardian

enthused "Vorchsprung Durh laughs".

The show starts at 7.30pm, and tickets, priced at £14.50 and £16.50, are available from the New Vic Box Office on (01782 ) 717962 or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

A superb background of experience

IT may be just 18 months since Clive Harris added a second 'component' to his Staffordshire-based company, but he certainly possesses the necessary pedigree to ensure total customer-satisfaction!

For, appositely-named Expert Car Inspections benefits from Clive's 40 years' experience within the motor trade - starting with an indentured apprenticeship and gaining his City & Guilds qualifications, to a 28-years-long service with VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency), the Government regulatory body, working on many aspects of vehicle-maintenance and compliance.

All this has given Clive an invaluable amount of expertise in facets of the motor trade - experience which, sadly, many people carrying out these types of inspections lack.

In addition, staff working for him boast similar (or very experienced) backgrounds, and their quality-of-work is regularly checked to ensure that each customer enjoys a consistent experience.

As a result, motorists are reassuringly secure in the knowledge that any vehicle inspected by ECI will be subjected to a rigorous inspection, assuring customers that a comprehensive report will be compiled to allow them to enter into a purchase or sale fully informed.

Complete car inspections are available - all carried out by fully-trained and highly-experienced staff - from as little as £80.

However, ECI's remit also takes in vans (up to 3,500kg), motor homes and HG (Heavy Goods) and PC (Passenger Carrying) vehicles.

Complementing all the experience possessed by ECI is the business's simple pricing-structure, which means that you can be confident that an expert is carrying out the inspection at realistic, eminently-affordable rates!

While car inspections start from £80

(£130 for 4x4s, classic cars and limousines), the price for vans

is £80 (up to 2,999kg) and £100 (3,000-3,500kg), with the rate motorhomes £170 (up to 3,500kg) and £210

(all other motorhomes).Full engineer's

reports on cars and vans are available for just £150, and those

for motorhomes, HGVs and PCVs cost only £170.Expert Car Inspections is an arm of the parent

company, CCH Vehicle & Training Services, a consultancy which Clive launched during

April, 2008, and provides an invaluable service not to the MoT garage-network and operators of heavy goods and passenger-carrying vehicles (the latter including Arriva Midlands).

Indeed CCH Vehicle & Training Services is currently carrying out

contracted work for a large number of high-profile transport clients, based in

the Midlands. At the same time, it is also contracted to a

very large number of garages operating the annual MoT Scheme, ensuring that they operate within

the parameters laid down in the MoT Testing Regulations and the operating

guidelines dicated by VOSA."As an arm of the Department

of Transport, VOSA provides a range of licensing, testing and enforcement services, with the aim of improving the roadworthiness of vehicles, ensuring the compliance of

operators and drivers and supporting the independent Traffic Commisioners,"

explained Clive Harris."I started out as an inspector of HGVs

and, then, PSVs, before, finally becoming station manager at Swynnerton Testing Centre, here in

Staffordshire."After a period of time, I saw an

opportunityto set up my own business, offering a facility which provides customers with the benefits of my years of experience, working with VOSA."

For an ultra-professional service, readers should
