WelcomeWe offer a wide range of interesting courses

for adults, which can be challenging and

thought-provoking or therapeutic and

enjoyable - or sometimes both - depending

on what you need!

There are dozens of different types of

courses such as arts and crafts, languages

and computer skills and loads more.

We are now offering a much greater choice of courses at

local venues. Read all about facilities in your community here.

All our centres are welcoming and friendly, giving you an

excellent opportunity to meet new people and share the

latest ideas. We encourage all our students to consider their

full potential. Our tutors and staff are on hand to discuss

whether a programme is right for you and what you need to

do to turn your dreams into reality; they are interested in you,

and what you want to achieve.

Our Adult and Community Learning and other short courses

can give you excellent progression routes onto a wide range

of higher professional and vocational courses.

Studying is one of the best investments you make in your

future but just as importantly it’s about you enjoying study

itself. By continuing to learn throughout your life you get

more from life, and can give more as well - at home, at work,

in our communities and abroad.

We are constantly updating our courses and offer new and

exciting topics every term, so keep checking or call us on

01462 424242 and let us know what courses you would like

to take part in.

Alter Your PerspectiveMost portraits are taken with the camera

at (or around) the eye level of the subject.

While this is good common sense –

completely changing the angle that you

shoot from can give your portrait a real

WOW factor.

Get up high and shoot down on your

subject or get as close to the ground as

you can and shoot up. Either way you’ll be

seeing your subject from an angle that is

bound to create interest.

Play with Eye ContactIt is amazing how much the direction of

your subject’s eyes can impact an image.

Most portraits have the subject looking

down the lens – something that can create

a real sense of connection between a

subject and those viewing the image. But

there are a couple of other things to try:

Looking off camera – have your subject

focus their attention on something

unseen and outside the field of view of

your camera. This can create a feeling

of candidness and also create a little

intrigue and interest as the viewer of the

shot wonders what they are looking at.

This intrigue is particularly drawn about

when the subject is showing some kind of

emotion (ie ‘what’s making them laugh?’

or ‘what is making them look surprised?’).

Just be aware that when you have a

subject looking out of frame that you can

also draw the eye of the viewer of the shot

to the edge of the image also – taking

them away from the point of interest in

your shot – the subject.

Looking within the frame – alternatively

you could have your subject looking at

something (or someone) within the frame.

A child looking at a ball, a woman looking

at her new baby, a man looking hungrily at

a big plate of pasta…. When you give your

subject something to look at that is inside

the frame you create a second point of

interest and a relationship between it and

your primary subject. It also helps create

‘story’ within the image.

Experiment with LightingAnother element of randomness that you can introduce to your portraits is the way that

you light them. There are almost unlimited possibilities when it comes to using light in

portraits. Side-lighting can create mood, backlighting and silhouetting your subject to

hide their features can be powerful.

Shoot TruthfullySometimes posed shots can look somewhat…. posed. Some people don’t look good in a

posed environment and so switching to a candid type approach can work.

Photograph your subject at work, with family or doing something that they love. This

will put them more at ease and you can end up getting some special shots with them

reacting naturally to the situation that they are in. You might even want to grab a longer

zoom lens to take you out of their immediate zone and get really paparazzi with them.

I find that this can particularly work when photographing children.

Andrea I started out by signing up for a 10 week leisure

course as I had always been frustrated about

my poor efforts to place flowers in a vase. At

first I was a little nervous as everyone seemed

to be more experienced. However the group

was incredibly friendly and tutor so

supportive that I quickly settled

in. The first ten week course

quickly passed and I signed

up for the next one and

then the next one .... until

flower arranging had

become very much part

of my life. My confidence

and knowledge had really

grown over this year of

leisure courses. The leisure

classes are great to be able to

try a range of different styles and

techniques. How far you want to push a design

is up to you, and you always know that you

will go home with a new design to show off to

family and friends.

The leisure courses had also really inspired me

to take floristry further so when I learned of a

C&G course that would lead to a qualification I

was really interested and signed up. Looking

back after a year, I can’t believe how much the

City and Guilds course has developed my

skills. I am now far more creative in

my arrangements and have a much

great understanding of how the

process of actually making an

arrangement works.

So far I have taken

Contemporary Floral Design

and am just completing

Traditional Floral Design. These

courses are different from the

leisure class and do require an

increased commitment as there is homework

to do. The paperwork can sometimes feel

too much but I know ultimately that the end

result of the qualification is worth it. My fellow

classmates are all friendly so it has become the

highlight of my week to go along for class - just

can’t wait to sign up for next year!

The meaning of flowers is as old as civilisation itself, and has been used as an expression

of emotion for centuries. The language of flowers started in the harems of the Middle

East, where secrecy between lovers was essential. Each flower had a meaning and secret

messages could be exchanged. The Victorians took this language to their hearts and

produced several dictionaries of the language of flowers. The Romans honoured their

heroes with laurel wreaths and the Ancient Greeks adorned their palaces with flowers.

Bouquets of flowers were carried during ancient feasts and festivals.

Training for Employment student Keith Knight and Supported Studies student Lindon Powell both from North Hertfordshire College, have been recognised with a Regional Individual Learner Award, as part of Adult Learners’ Week 2012.

The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) awards adult learners each year to highlight the importance of continued learning.

Following a period of long term unemployment, Keith Knight, 47 from Stevenage joined Training for Employment at NHC. Keith explained: “The course was over a period of four weeks with other people in a similar situation to mine, after a couple of weeks at college you can feel your confidence coming back.

I had two great teachers who acted as mentors to help me update my CV and gain confidence because when you’re unemployed for a long time your confidence ebbs away. I finished the course and managed to start work a week later as a parking control office at Lister Hospital. I’m now working on the front desk in more of a customer service role, I’m so pleased to get back into work and I really do enjoy my job.”

Supported Studies student Lindon Powell, currently studies on the NHC Pathways Course for young adults with learning difficulties. Lindon made fantastic progress on his course and secured part-time employment at Shine, the college’s student run car wash and

valeting centre. Supported Studies Lecturer Wendy Berezowy commented: “During Lindon’s time at college he has made great progress, he always works hard to achieve everything to the best of his ability. He takes pride in his work and has demonstrated real dedication and commitment working at Shine.”

David Hughes, NIACE Chief Executive, said: “Every one of our award winners, for this year’s Adult Learners’ Week, illustrates how learning can help people to change their lives, make them feel part of their community and help support them in their future.”

College wins double in adult learner’s week awards
