There are some exciting things going on at CSSC. First and foremost is the organisation of the CSSC Games 2013! If you have never taken part in this amazing event, surely the London Olympic Games have inspired you to have a go this year? This is the biggest event in CSSC’s sporting calendar and we cannot emphasise enough the amount of fun everyone has at the Games – please join us! p.14.

On the leisure side of things, our exciting news is that we have joined forces with English Heritage and Historic Scotland! See our features on p.4 and p.5 to find out how you can benefit!

We have loads of great events lined up for you (see p.14-23). For example, read about our family trip to Disneyland Paris for Bonfire Night as well as a cycling trip to Mallorca. Check out your region’s page on our website because there are plenty of other trips being organised just for you – we simply can’t fit them all in Leisure Scene!

If you are new to CSSC or if you’ve been a member for years and need reminding, see our feature on p.10 which tells you all the great things you can get out of your membership. Sometimes members join for a specific reason (to join the gym or to get cheap cinema tickets, for example) and they simply don’t realise there is a whole world of other benefits out there for you to enjoy!

Enjoy the read, stay active and have fun!

Please send all Leisure Scene feedback and contributions to:

CSSC was initially approached by BCC in June 2012 after the idea was raised by members of staff who had recently taken part in a wellbeing survey. The Bristol Wellbeing Group then found details of the Health and Fitness Centre programme on the CSSC website.

The office had a disused training room which was perfect for the project and as luck would have it, it had air conditioning and two small meeting rooms next door which were turned into changing rooms. Paul Taylor, who led the project at BCC, says, “CSSC has been fantastic! Sharon Ashby explained how best to take the project forward and Alan Peed then visited the site and talked us through everything that would be involved in setting up a fitness centre. They were then able to talk us through the equipment options available and how it could be funded by way of an interest-free loan arrangement that is available and have expertly guided us through the whole process. Six months later and we now have a facility to be really proud of. And thanks to a wonderful team of enthusiastic volunteers who run the gym for its members, the facility is going from strength to strength.”

The equipment installed is a mixture of cardiovascular and strength. It is the first CSSC HFC to have all CYBEX equipment installed. There are two treadmills, two bikes, a rowing machine and an arc trainer. In a bid to save space, but

gain more workout options, the strength machines supplied

are mostly dual use. There is a dual multi

press, dual fly/rear delt, dual leg extension/leg curl, lat pull, leg press and dumbbells and bench. There is enough equipment for 12 or so people to use

at any one time.

The new gym currently has a membership of 50 who use the facilities regularly, usually before or after work. Paul says,

“The staff are all really impressed with the quality of the facility and many have now become regular visitors.

Membership has been extended to other DWP sites in our area, and once again CSSC has

helped us by identifying those offices that can be granted access. The gym has only been open for a few months but it has already started to become a focal point of the department and continues to attract new members. And there can’t be many

people who can say they have a gym at work on the 5th floor with beautiful views

over Bristol!”

This is what one member of the new gym had to say about it: “It really is an excellent facility for staff, and

the quality of the equipment and facilities is much higher than those of the private gym I used to use in the centre of Bristol. What’s more, at just £8.90 a month it is exceptional value for money. I now use the gym twice a week, which works out at just £1 a session. I would encourage anyone who is thinking of joining to do so now.”

If you haven’t got the room to put an HFC in your office, all is not lost! Your CSSC Countdown Card enables you to get great savings at the following well known chains: 6% off at Virgin Active gyms with the Virgin Voucher; 10% off joining fee at Curves by showing your CSSC Card; 8% off at Champneys via Leisure Vouchers; 50% off membership at DW Sports with your CSSC Card; 25% off subscription and no joining fee with your card at Roko Health Clubs; 12 months for the price of 10 and no joining fee at Seb Coe Health Clubs; and 6% off SpaFinder with SayShopping Pass. For full details and booking, plus more information on all of these offers, visit cssc.co.uk/countdown or reference your CSSC offer booklet.

One in 10 BillionCSSC MEMBER DES TINNEY IS DOING SOMETHING AMAZING FOR A LITTLE BOY HE HAS NEVER MET.

On March 16 2013, Des rode from Glasgow to Belfast for Neuroblastoma Alliance UK, a charity which is helping to beat childhood cancer. This is Des’ story: “There is a 4 year old boy called Oscar in Belfast who is literally 1 in 10 billion,” says Des, “He’s the only kid in the world who has Jacobsen Syndrome (an extremely rare chromosome disorder) and also Neuroblastoma (an aggressive childhood cancer). I don’t know him, I may never meet him; I may meet his parents when I get to Belfast, but that doesn’t really matter. I have been following his story for the past 6 months, as has the rest of Northern Ireland. The reason I’m doing this is because my son Leon is the same age as Oscar. His parents post the same pictures Claire and I take of Leon: in the garden, dressing up as

Spiderman, getting the same toys from Santa, playing with Thomas the Tank Engine and Lighting McQueen! It got me thinking, what if something happened to my family,

would there be random people out there who I don’t know willing to help me? I hope there would

be. So I became part of #Teamoscar, 100 cyclists from around the UK who met up in Belfast to help this little guy.”

M i l e SDURING 2013CSSC members Andy McCabe, Bev Ellis and Jimmy Hawkes, also known as the Kielder 3, have set themselves a challenge. To run 2013 miles in 2013.

The aim is simple: To raise as much money as possible for their chosen charities, Macmillan Cancer Support (please donate at: justgiving.com/Bev-Ellis1 or text: Text CASH53 plus amount to 70070 e.g. CASH53 10); and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals (please donate at: rlbuht.workwithus.org/Fundraising/Donate.aspx?page=7681). They aim to run all 2013 miles together on lunchtime and weekend runs as well as during four major events, one of them being an event they are organising themselves: the ‘Kielder 3’ 24 hour relay. The three other events are: Marathon of the North; Great North Run (which they shall do in fancy dress and ‘Baywatch’ is currently the number 1 choice of theme!) and their challenge will culminate with the final 78.6 miles being run at the Chester Marathon on 7 October, when they plan to cross the finishing line together. Find them on Twitter: @kielder3 or visit: kielder3.wordpress.com. Good luck!

Menai to Mumbles kayak challenge

A team of 18 people are embarking on a challenging nine day sea kayak expedition around the coast of Wales in aid of two Armed Forces charities: Royal British Legion and Scotty’s Little Soldiers (a charity which supports children of service men and women killed in action). CSSC member Mark Cook will be one of them! Starting at Plas Menai in North Wales, their journey concludes 270 miles later at Langland Bay in Swansea. Their route is well known for its difficulty and the kayakers will average 30 miles a day (around seven hours kayaking), however it does take in some of the most stunning coastline around the British Isles. We wish Mark and the rest of his team good luck! You can sponsor Mark at: justgiving.com/Mark-Cook5 and follow the team on twitter @menai2Mumbles.

VolunteersarethelifebloodofCSSC.Everyyearhundreds of CSSC volunteers give their time to ensure that other CSSC members can enjoy a wide and diverse programme of activities and events. Every CSSC sporting, leisure and recreation programme is only made possible because of those CSSC members who choose to become volunteers. And we always need more, so if you would like to get involved, please get in touch!

Each volunteer is a vital cog in the machine, enabling CSSC to deliver activities and events to more than 100,000 members. Whichever activity you choose to get involved in, CSSC will ensure that you receive the necessary training to get the job done and enjoy the volunteer experience.

CSSC would like you to join in helping members to enjoy their involvement with CSSC, but we also want you to enjoy yourself too! So, how you choose to volunteer depends entirely on your own interests and how much time you have to spare. Many volunteers give up their time on a regular basis. Others help out occasionally, whenever they have time. Whatever you do, you’ll be making a real difference.

CSSC volunteering brings all kinds of opportunities. It broadens your experience and boosts your confidence. You could learn new skills or hone existing talents. It is also a chance to make new friends and to be part of a team that makes a difference to people working in the civil service and public sector.

CSSCislookingtogrowateamofvolunteers, theVTeam.TheaimoftheVTeamovertimeistohelpclubsandassociations ‘work smarter’ and ‘not harder’ and provide a pool of volunteers to give support where there is a volunteer shortfall, primarily at national CSSC events. HUGE RANGE OF LOCAL, REGIONAL AND NATIONAL SPORTING EVENTS AND LEISURE ACTIVITIES

CSSC was founded to help civil servants get fit, keep active and live a healthier lifestyle. Sporting events were held to encourage

members to get involved, be a part of a team and to get some exercise. This ethos still stands today but CSSC means a whole lot more than that now! We now offer a whole host of leisure activities too, from local days out, to week-long trips abroad. And of course we have now opened up our membership to include public sector workers and family and friends. It’s no longer just about keeping fit – we want you to have fun as well! Forthcoming events are featured from p.14, or visit cssc.co.uk.

THOUSANDS OF OFFERS AND DISCOUNTS AT HIGH STREET SHOPS, RETAILERS AND RESTAURANTSYour CSSC membership card doubles up as your Countdown card,

which allows you to access the whole Countdown Members’ Offers scheme. This gives you a simple, effective way to save a little or a lot, every day, every month and at anytime, either by ordering shopping cards/vouchers over the phone, or by accessing Countdown’s website. Offers range from high street stores to holidays, fun days out, keeping fit and much, much more, along with a huge range of local discounts so you can save every day of every week. For up-to-date information on all national and regional offers, check out: countdowncard.com

FAMILY DAYS OUT, TRIPS AND REDUCED PRICE THEME PARK TICKETSCSSC also offers members the chance to buy theme park tickets at a reduced rate so you can organise your own day trip independently of CSSC. Whether you want an annual Merlin pass, a day at the

zoo, a night at the theatre, or a fun-packed day at Thorpe Park, there is something for everyone! (And that’s just for starters…)

NEW AND DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES FOR YOU TO TRYIf you have always wanted to try something

new, but either didn’t know where to start or couldn’t pluck up the courage – your CSSC

membership will be the best spring board to power you on your way. We have so much to offer, you will have no more excuses to keep putting it off! And you are bound to come across like-minded people along the way to experience these things with you. Why not encourage a few of your colleagues to become members with you and then you can all do it together? Form a darts team, join the netball league, organise a theatre trip, take advantage of our taster days and try your hand at gliding, archery, clay pigeon shooting… We can’t emphasise enough that there is so much on offer for you through CSSC.

REBATES ON ENTRY FEES FOR RUNNING,

CYCLING, TRIATHLON AND OPEN-WATER SWIMMINGWe want you to push yourself, to take the next step. If you’re a runner, a swimmer or a cyclist (or all three), but you’ve never taken part in an organised event, now’s your chance! To encourage more of you to take part in events organised for these sports outside of CSSC, we have introduced a hugely popular Activity Subsidy Scheme – we will pay for some, or all, of your entry fee. There’s nothing stopping you now! Please note: you must register in advance of the event. For full details, terms and conditions, visit cssc.co.uk and click on ‘Subsidy Scheme 2013’.

OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS AND ENHANCE YOUR SKILLS THROUGH OUR VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

We have an army of volunteers who make CSSC happen. The majority of all CSSC events are organised by volunteers. Volunteers also form regional committees to make local things happen in your area. If it wasn’t for our volunteers none of this would be possible. They mean so much to us that we hold an annual prize giving ceremony, where trophies are awarded, including the prestigious CSSC Volunteer of the Year award. We’ll always welcome new volunteers, we can never have too many! Exercise forPain Relief

Moderate exercise is reported to be one of the best ways to reduce

osteoarthritis-related pain and improve joint functioning.

Researchers have advised those suffering from joint pain not to carry out high intensity

exercise which will aggravate the joints, but instead to take part in a routine of pilates-based and weight-bearing exercise, for an hour, three times a week. Doing this for four months can boost cartilage levels, overall physical activity, aerobic fitness, stamina and strengthen joint function.

The Miracle of TeaHaving a ‘cuppa’ in order to relax is not just a placebo. Research by University College London has shown that those who drink tea are likely to recover a lot quicker from stress than those who don’t. Black tea has been shown to cut levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their blood. After a stressful day regular tea-drinkers are therefore hormonally more resistant to stress than non-tea-drinkers. If that wasn’t a big enough incentive, the study also found that tea-drinkers had a lower risk of blood clotting and heart attacks!

Source: Psychopharmacology 190: 81-89

What’s more, our beloved British drink is found to have health-enhancing powers. It has been discovered that tea has the potential to help prevent coronary artery disease and stroke. However, research has found that the health benefits to your cardiovascular system are dramatically reduced by adding milk. These findings about the negative effect of adding milk were reiterated by cardiologist Professor Verena Stangl, who stated that: “Our results provide a possible explanation for the lack of beneficial effects of tea on the risk of heart disease in the UK, a country where milk is usually added.” So, try taking your tea without milk and sugar for a change and let your body reap the benefits.

Junk FoodIt’s no secret that junk food is somewhat lacking in nutritional value – ‘junk’ doesn’t refer to the flavour. Yet every day across the world people line up at the counters, hand over their cash and are instantly presented with a meal. For some people it’s the convenience of having food prepared for you, for others it’s the time saved not putting together their own lunch; and for many it’s simply the fact that junk food is loaded with enough salt and fat that it seems delicious. But those short term reasons for regularly ordering junk food brings serious long term health problems.

We’ve known for a long time that junk food poses health risks, and striving to improve on poor nutrition has been the burden of health advisers and the fast food companies for years. Despite recent improvements to fast food menus, researchers have revealed that 35% of heart attacks globally are linked to diets reliant on fried food, salty snacks and meat. In contrast, people who avoided reliance on junk food and ate more fruit and vegetables had a 30% lower risk of heart attack compared to people who didn’t eat fruit and vegetables.

So, the next time you’re short on time and want a quick food fix, stay away from the fast food and find a healthy alternative instead! The flavours can be as rich and filling as in junk food, but they won’t put you in an early grave!

Smoke-Free EnvironmentsDid you know that you are ten times more likely to be successful in quitting smoking if you live in a smoke-free household and work in a smoke-free workplace? These findings prove that in order to have a higher chance of quitting in the long term, you should place yourself in non-smoking environments. Try to keep yourself away from situations where you know people will be smoking. For example, avoid the “smokers’ corner” at the office and the “smoking area” at bars, and notice the temptation decrease!

WalkingWalking is one of the most simple forms of exercise that we can do – it has massive benefits, yet it’s so underrated. In pure physical health terms walking can help fight heart disease, risk of stroke, high blood pressure, cholesterol, cancers (particularly bowel cancer), Type 2 diabetes, and of course obesity. A study examined more than 8,500 men who worked in sedentary jobs. The study found that those who walked for more than 21 minutes to work were 25% less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those who walked for less than 10 minutes. With there being approximately 366 million people with diabetes worldwide, it is more important than ever to include exercise in your daily routine to prevent being diagnosed.

If those aren’t enough health reasons to get out and walk, a morning stroll is great for calming you down and waking you up before work. Do you really want to cram onto a bus or train to go a couple of stops, or would you rather a healthy

walk in the sunshine? And for the financially-minded,

walking to work, especially if you live in a city, will save you those expensive fuel and public

transport costs.

Eating OutEating healthily shouldn’t jeopardise your social life; you can learn to eat healthily whilst enjoying going out for meals. These suggestions should help you to enjoy guilt-free meals out:

1 If you’re unsure as to what something is, or what it contains, ask! If the waiter/waitress doesn’t know, then the chef will.

2 Don’t be afraid to speak up about how you’d like a dish prepared, for instance ask for no mayonnaise or dressing on the side.

3 Opt for smaller portions e.g. have a starter as a main course and realise that you can still feel full! Think about sharing a course between two.

4 Finally, if you know you’re eating out later and it could be a lavish affair, make wise choices earlier in the day to keep calories, fat, sugar and salt intakes under control.

Follow these steps and you can enjoy a night out without fretting about the health consequences.

Low Fat IllusionsBe wary of low-fat labels on food items. Not only do these low-fat items often contain increased amounts of sugar and salt to compensate for the low fat, but people also tend to consume larger amounts of low-fat foods. Low-fat labels tend to lure people into a false sense of security by making them think that what they are consuming is really healthy. Research has found that those eating low-fat food consumed an average of 28% more total calories than those eating the regular alternatives. Dr Pierre Chandon (The European Institute of Business Education) stated that “people believe they will feel less guilty eating the low-fat foods, so they tend to overindulge. Fat is often replaced with sugar.”
