A warm welcome back for all staff, students, parents, carers and the wider commu-

nity. Term 4 is going to be a huge finish to what has been a highly productive and

successful 2019. Not only will it be a term filled with high quality learning, but we

will also have a range of major events and celebrations including the 150th this

weekend, whole school performance, kindy transition, Remembrance Day, gradua-

tion and a few sporting clinics and carnivals. Please see below information regard-

ing the event this weekend to support your planning.

150th Celebration:

This event is shaping up to be an amazing celebration of 150 years of education

within the district. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning so much about the rich cul-

ture and I’m thrilled to hear how proud our community is of the school and the

surrounding area. I will provide a brief running sheet for the day to support you

with your planning. However, please note that we are putting the final touches on

planning and some of these times are subject to change.

Official Opening

The day will commence officially at 11:00am, which will be immediately after the

10:00am opening of the heritage trail at Centennial Park. As part of our official

opening, we will welcome Peramangk/Kaurna man Ivan-Tiwu Copely to provide a

Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony. This is a significant ceremony and

quite special to be a part of, so I encourage you all to be here for the start. We will

also welcome special guests including Mayor Wisdom and the Minister for Educa-

tion. The ceremony will run for 30-40 minutes and will conclude with a commemo-

rative cutting of the cake.

Class performances and activities

From approximately midday, the students will be involved in providing entertain-

ment via class performances and/or musical items. It is important that we have

students at school with a supervising adult prior to the first act at 12:15pm. The

purpose of the performances is to provide some background entertainment for our

guests as they reconnect with friends from the past. We have also hired a bouncy

castle and will have traditional games and sports equipment out to use throughout

the day. In addition to the activities and performances we have employed Mark

Duncan for the day to take professional reunion photos in the library. Be sure to

check out the schedule, so you don’t miss your era.

For purchase

P&F will be selling BBQ lunch, scones and cakes throughout the day, while we have

arranged for a coffee van to be on site to take care of the hot drinks. In addition to

this, Governing Council will be supporting the event by providing information

about the school.

The school staff in collaboration with P&F will be selling commemorative plaques, which will be installed on the re-

taining wall at the entry of the school and commemorative wine will also be available to purchase. Please note that

the school is strictly a dry-zone, therefore all wine purchased is for the purpose of consuming off-site only. The Pay

wave Square will be available for card purchases of all fundraising items.

At approximately 3:00pm we will conclude the day by announcing the winners of the door prizes. In order to claim

the prize you must still be at the event, so please stick around and enjoy the festivities.

A huge amount of work has gone into planning and preparing for the event, however I will hold my messages of

thanks until the next newsletter after the spectacular event. Our staff are rostered onto working at stalls throughout

most of the day, therefore will not be providing direct duty of care for students outside of the class performance

time. To ensure safety of your children, could you please have a supervising adult here at school throughout the day.

We are currently looking at our school budget for 2020. A big part of our income is based on our school

enrolments. Apart from our leaving year 7’s, if you know your child wont be attending Lenswood in

2020 and you haven’t let us know as yet, please contact either Jess or Julia as soon as possible.

A big well done and congratulations to Clare Thompson, Seth Hannaford and Josh Martin

on being selected in the girls and boys Hills SAPSASA Cricket teams! They will be representing both our

school and the Hills region in week 4 on November 4 - 7. Good luck and enjoy your week, we’re sure you

will make yourselves and us very proud.

A reminder our school performance is fast approaching. Notes have gone home with all students need-

ing costumes for the show. Some of our younger students still don’t have their correct costumes. Please

TUNING IN TO TEENSTM: Workshop

You are invited to take part in a one day Tuning in to TeensTM Workshop run by headspace at Mount Barker on 7th

November from 9.30am-4.30pm. This Workshop is a free program that aims to help you and your adolescent man-

age the many emotional challenges of this stage of life. The workshop will teach you how to manage your own and

your adolescent’s emotions in ways that help you to remain close and keep communicating. By learning these skills,

you are less likely to have as much conflict within your family and your teen is more likely to talk to you about the

challenging issues they face. These are factors that have been found to reduce the risk of mental health and sub-

stance abuse problems.

What is Emotional intelligence? The program is based on the concept of Emotional Intelligence. Emotional Intelli-

gence (EQ) is about using your emotions to guide you through the world. It is about being able to use your own

knowledge of emotions to make decisions, to calm yourself down, to manage anger and conflict, to help you in your

relationships with people, to know what is happening in social situations, and to assist you in many aspects of life

where you or another person are involved.

Why is Emotional Intelligence important? Research has shown that adolescents with greater emotional intelligence:

• are more aware, assertive and strong in situations of peer pressure

• have greater success with making friends and are more able to manage conflict with peers

• are more able to cope when upset or angry

• have fewer mental health and substance abuse difficulties

• have more stable and satisfying relationships as adults

• have greater career success — Emotional Intelligence may be a better predictor of academic and career success

than IQ.

When parents focus on helping their teen learn about emotions, the young person is more likely to have higher emo-

tional intelligence. In this parenting program we will teach parents what to do to help these skills develop, and in

doing so we expect teens to manage adolescence better.

Interschool Chess

Turning in to Teens Workshop - Invitation

On Thursday in the last week of term 3, Eden, Grace, Dillon, Israel, Thomas and Reuben

completed in the Interschool Chess tournament held at Norton Summit PS. Our students

finished 4th overall with both Reuben and Thomas finishing in the top 10. All students

played well, against some very tough competition and had a great time.
