Welcome

Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages

are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us.

Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy.

VISION STATEMENT

Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a

Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.

MISSION OBJECTIVES

•To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and

welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst;

• To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;

• To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among

parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;

• To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God

within and beyond the Parish;

• To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our

assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to

generation, to the everlasting glory of God.

Wireless hearing amplifiers are available.

Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the

church on the opposite side to the entrance.

Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the

service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make

an appointment.

The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the

Mass.

The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to

those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also

customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus.

You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and

prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins.

We adore you,

most Holy Lord Jesus Christ

here and in all your churches throughout all the world;

and we bless you because

by your Holy Cross

you have redeemed the world.

A Reflection

A Reading from a sermon of Augustine

Let us sing "Alleluia" here and now in this life, even though we are oppressed by

various worries, so that we may sing it one day in the world to come when we are

set free from all anxiety. Why is it that we worry so much in this life? I suppose it is

hardly surprising that we worry when we read in the Scriptures: "Are not the days

of our life full of trouble?" Are you surprised that I am worried when I hear the

words: "Watch and pray that you enter not into temptation"? Are you surprised

that I am worried when in the face of so many temptations and troubles the Lord's

Prayer orders us to pray: "Forgive us our debts as we also forgive our debtor"?

Every day we pray and every day we sin. Do you think that I can be free from

anxiety when every day I need to seek pardon for my sins and help in the face of

difficulties? When I have said for my past sins: "Forgive us our debts as we also

forgive our debtors," I immediately go on to add, because of the difficulties that lie

ahead: "Lead us not into temptation." How can the congregation be in security

when it cries out with me: "Deliver us from evil"? And yet, my brothers and sisters,

in this evil plight of ours we must nevertheless sing "Alleluia" to the good God who

delivers us from evil.

In the middle of the dangers and trials that beset us we and all people must sing

"Alleluia," for as Paul says, "God is faithful and God will not let you be tempted

beyond your strength." So then, we must sing "Alleluia." We may be sinners, but

God is faithful. And note, Scripture does not say, "God will not let you be

tempted," but rather "God will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but

with the temptation God will also provide a means of escape that you may be able

to endure it." If you enter temptation God will also provide a means of escape so

that you do not perish. Just as a potter forms a vase, so you are to be molded by

preaching; you are to be fired in the kiln of tribulation. Thus when you enter

temptation, think of a means of escape; for God is faithful. As it says in one of the

psalms: "The Lord will preserve your coming in and your going out."

vol. 38, cols 1190-1, ed. J.P. Migne, Paris, 1844-64

The Liturgy of the Word

OLD TESTAMENT READING Be seated

Reader A reading from the Book of Isaiah.

Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy

and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you

spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labour for that which does not

satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.

Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an

everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. See, I made him a witness to the

peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. See, you shall call nations that you do

not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the Lord your

God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. Seek the Lord while he may be

found, call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake their way, and the

unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on

them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your

thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than

the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah 55:1-9

Sub-deacon The word of the Lord.

lllAll Thanks be to God.

PSALM A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

O God, you are my God; eagerly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my flesh faints for

you, as in a barren and dry land where there is no water.

Therefore I have gazed upon you in your holy place, that I might behold your power and

your glory.

For your loving-kindness is better than life itself; my lips shall give you praise. Antiphon

Psalm 63:1-3

Page 13: Lent 3

EPISTLE READING

Sub-deacon A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Corinthians.

I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under

the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud

and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink.

For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.

Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, and they were struck down in the

wilderness. Now these things occurred as examples for us, so that we might not desire

evil as they did. Do not become idolaters as some of them did; as it is written, "The

people sat down to eat and drink, and they rose up to play." We must not indulge in

sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day.

We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by

serpents. And do not complain as some of them did, and were destroyed by the

destroyer. These things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written

down to instruct us, on whom the ends of the ages have come. So if you think you are

standing, watch out that you do not fall. No testing has overtaken you that is not

common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your

strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to

endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:1-13

Sub-deacon The word of the Lord.

lllAll Thanks be to God.

To you I lift up my eyes, O Lord, to you, enthroned in the heavens. Be merciful to us, O

Lord, be merciful to us.

THE HOLY GOSPEL All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

At that very time there were some present who told Jesus about the Galileans whose

blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. He asked them, "Do you think that

because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other

Galileans? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Or those

eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam - fell on them - do you think that

they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but

unless you repent, you will all perish as they did." Then he told this parable: "A man had

a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So

he said to the gardener, 'See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this

fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?' He replied,

'Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears

fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.'" Luke 13:1-9

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Kneel

Celebrant Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly

Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our na-

ture upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there,

by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, obla-

tion, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy

gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until

his coming again.

Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving

these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s

holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most

blessed body and blood;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks,

he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given

for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” +

Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them,

saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for

you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remem-

brance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we thy humble servants with all thy

holy Church, remembering the precious death of thy beloved Son, his mighty resurrec-

tion, and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again in glory, do make before

thee, in this sacrament of the holy bread of eternal life and the cup of everlasting salva-

tion, the memorial which he hath commanded.

lllAll We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee,

Lord our God.

Celebrant And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of

praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and

death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole

Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we

pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy commun-

ion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our

Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour

and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end.

lllAll Amen.

THE THEOLOGY OF SALVATION

The branch of theology concerned with salvation is called soteriology.

It comes from the Greek word for salvation.

Soteriology: The section of Christian theology which treats of the saving

work of Christ for the world. It includes not only the doctrines of the

Atonement and of Grace, but also (1) the doctrine of human nature as

affected by the Fall and by sin, which is the presupposition of Christ’s work,

and (2) the doctrine of man’s final destiny as the result of that work.

CONFESSION FRIDAYS IN MARCH

Each Friday in March a priest will be available to

hear private confessions from 10:00 am until

noon. You can let the priest know you are coming,

or just come as the spirit moves you. Of course if

Friday mornings do not work for you, please make

an appointment with one of the parish priests for

another time. When we take time during Lent to

examine our relationships with God, our

neighbour and ourselves we realize we fall short,

and it is a healing practice to confess our short-

comings with one of the parish priests.

You can pick up a copy of Examining our

Conscience in the narthex to prepare yourself for

confession if you are needing direction, or speak

with a priest.

REFUGEE SPONSORSHIP

St James' Outreach Committee is currently

assisting with the sponsorship of a refugee family

from Iraq, together with St Mary's Anglican

Church, in Halifax. This elderly couple fled from

their homeland to Syria, where they were

registered with the UNHCR, and subsequently

selected to come to Canada through the private

sponsorship scheme organized by the Primate's

World Relief and Development Fund.

Unfortunately the outbreak of civil war in Syria

led to the withdrawal of Canada's diplomatic

representatives in Damascus, including the Visa

Office, which deals with refugee affairs. This has

now been relocated to Amman, Jordan. Contact

with the refugee camps in Syria is consequently

all the more difficult.

Because of this disruption, the time for this

couple's medical examinations and chest X-rays

had expired, and they have had to be done

again. This happened in late November, but the

results had to be sent to Paris for verification.

We have had no further news as to when this

couple may be allowed to travel to Canada.

Their daughter, who has already arrived in

Halifax, is naturally extremely anxious.

Your prayers are asked for this family.

THANK OFFERING - MELANESIAN

BROTHERHOOD

In support of Brother John Blythe's recovery

following his recent hospitalization, some

parishioners have initiated renewed

contributions to the ongoing work of the

Melanesian Brotherhood in the Solomon

Islands. Parish members interested in adding to

these contributions are invited to forward them

to the church office or deposit them in the

Sunday service offering basket.

THE PASCHAL CANDLE

Most of you are familiar with the Paschal

Candle. It is the first flame lit from the new fire

at the Easter Vigil, which represents the light of

Christ rising to dispel the darkness of our hearts

and minds. The candle is marked by special

symbols: the cross; the Greek letters for alpha

and omega reminding us that God is the

beginning and the end; the current year,

Page 30: Lent 3

St. James’ News & Announcements

representing God present with us now; and five

grains of incense representing the five wounds of

Christ. The Paschal Candle is processed into the

church at the Easter Vigil and remains in its

holder near the altar throughout the Easter season,

during which it is lit at all Masses held in the main

sanctuary.

The Paschal Candle is specially made and must be

ordered in advance of Easter. It costs in the

neighbourhood of $200. If you would like to

support this meaningful tradition by making a

donation toward the cost of the candle, please add

the amount to your offering envelope, and on the

outside of the envelope write the amount and

beside it write “Paschal Candle”. If you do not use

envelopes but would like to donate, please call the

Church Office.

NEWS FROM GENERAL SYNOD

Join our push for affordable housing

Ali Symons, General Synod Senior Editor.

Housing continues to be a joint priority for

Anglicans and Lutherans as they support Bill C-

400, a private member's bill calling on the

government to develop a national housing

strategy. Anglican and Lutheran staff leaders

engaged in this issue invite local church

members to connect with MPs about the bill

before it goes before Parliament, Feb. 13.

An estimated 400,000 Canadians do not have

healthy homes. The UN Special Report on

Adequate Housing has observed that "Canada is

one of the few countries in the world without a

national housing strategy."

Bill C-400 recognizes housing as a human right.

It would commit the government to work with

non-profits, the private sector, Aboriginal

communities, and all levels of government in

developing a national housing strategy. With set

timelines and goals, the strategy would then

address the root causes of homelessness and set

a plan to provide housing for all.

Church members are encouraged to write to or

meet with their MPs about Bill C-400 as soon as

possible. Resources are available through

Dignity for All, a campaign co-founded by

long-time ecumenical partner Citizens for

Public Justice. http://dignityforall.ca.

This advocacy push is one example of housing

work Christians do on a daily basis across

Canada.

In Victoria, Evangelical Lutheran churches

network with other non-profits to ensure

adequate housing for all levels of poverty: those

who live on government subsidies, the working

poor, and the lower middle class.

In Winnipeg, St. Matthew's Anglican Church is

converting its property to 25 units of affordable

housing for limited income families, a

neighbourhood resource centre, and a dedicated

worship space. Many more examples exist

across the country, including at a regional level.

On a national level, the Anglican Church of

Canada and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in

Canada are developing a shared resolution on

housing and homelessness to be presented at

Joint Assembly, to be held July 2013 in Ottawa.

The resolution will commit both churches to

continued local action and government

advocacy.

To support Bill C-400, please visit the Dignity

for All website to see these resources:

• read the backgrounder on Bill C-400

MP

• use these talking points when meeting with

your MP
