Lenten Reflections Introduction

Lent is a period of 40 days preceding the celebration of Christ’s Passion. The word itself in English comes from an Old English word for Spring, though in other languages it has different names.

The 40 days of Lent are meant to connect us to our Lord’s 40 day fast at the beginning of His ministry, where he withdrew into the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil.

Lent is preparation for entering into the events of Holy Week, helping us to remember our need for a Savior and our Lord’s gracious love for us exhibited in his suffering on our behalf. It is a time of self-reflection, repentance, “putting to death what remains of our sinful nature” (Colossians 3:5), and self-denial.

The following Lenten studies are provided for your reflection during this 40-day period. Each study is intended for a week of reflection, discussion, and sharing with family and friends. We encourage you to read through the various Scripture references and meditate on the selected topic for that given week.

There are additional studies here that are provided for your choosing. The Lenten reflections are designed for both group and individual study. We recommend taking the following approach:

- Begin the study by first, praying to the Holy Spirit for guidance and understanding.

- Second, read through the study in its entirety, pausing on each page to reflect

and discuss if participating in a group.

- Next, complete the online review to reinforce your understanding. You can find the web address for each online review at the end of each study.

- Finally, take time throughout the week to reread sections of the study, look up

the Biblical references on your own and enjoy a deeper understanding of the Scriptures for that specific topic.

Remember, this is to be all done in the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Word is written so souls may please God and have eternal life. Please study it with the respect and devotion it deserves!

For whatever good this material achieves, to God be the glory!
