A YEAR-END NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

As you’ll see from the various articles, it has been a year of change, and growth, and celebration. We welcome four new members to our Board of Advisors, including the University’s 28th President, Fr. Paul Fitzgerald, S.J.

Our graduate programs in Urban and Public Affairs are going strong. The Stephen A. Privett Global Service-Learning program, McCarthy Fellows in Sacramento, and the USF in D.C. program are all thriving. In particular, the program in D.C. has tripled in size in a little more than a year, and the Center is continuing to work with faculty and community partners to develop high quality service-learning courses across aca-demic disciplines, and increasingly in graduate programs. IN MEMORIAM:

Our priorities for the coming year are to continue to build the fiscal sustainability of the Center by growing the endowment and to ensure that USF students are able to access our high impact transformative programs regardless of their financial situations. Over the past year we have expanded grants for students in both undergraduate and graduate programs and will continue to do so in keeping with Leo McCarthy’s vision for the Center. Senator Foran joined the McCarthy Center’s Board of Advisors in 2009 and became Chair in 2013. Though he was supportive of all programs of the Center, he took particular interest in our summer McCarthy Fellows program in Sacramento and helped develop the academic curriculum for the program. This spring, Engage San Francisco, a new campus-community part-nership with San Francisco’s Western Addition neighborhood was launched following an 18-month planning process that included community partners, residents, USF faculty, staff, students and alumni.

From dozens of workshops and community meetings, a vision for Engage San Francisco emerged as an intentional, systematic and transformative initiative that seeks to achieve community-identified outcomes supporting children, youth and families. Engage San Francisco, consistent with University of San Francisco’s mission and vision for 2028, strives to connect every school and college in addressing four interlocking is-sues of Education, Health, Housing, and Workforce Development.

The first phase of the Engage

San Francisco’s implementation is concentrating on 1) Creating a local Immersion for the Presidential leadership team; 2) Developing proposals and partnerships including a year-round literacy project (READ), a health and wellness project with a mobile clinic and an Early Childhood Education project. There’s also a proposal to explore USF scholarships for Western Addition residents and community service providers.

This summer, Engage San Fran-cisco awarded five (5) Commu-nity Engagement Grants totaling $20,000 to teams of faculty and Western Addition service providers in support of new and existing partnerships. The partnerships were recognized at a reception at the African American Arts and Culture Complex on October 21st where USF President Father Paul

Fitzgerald spoke of USF’s com-mitment to the Western Addition while Supervisor London Breed presented the grantees with certif-icates. The first round of recipients include the African American Shakespeare Company, The Village Project, Handful Players, Church of St. John Coltrane and the Buchanan YMCA and San Francisco Unified School District.

The next request for Proposals for Community Engagement grants will be available Spring 2015 so that grantees can plan for projects to begin as early as summer 2015.

The Global Service-Learning Program is now the Privett Global Service Learning Program—a name change made possible by the generous un-derwriting by the Sarlo Foundation, a supporting foundation of the Jewish Community Foundation & Endowment Fund. The Foundation has supported the Global Program over the past four years and recently agreed to rename the program in honor of our past president, Father Stephen Privett.

The program structure remains the same and will continue to send 10-15 fellows in partnership with the Foundation for Sustainable Development to Bolivia and India over the summer semester to carry out community development projects with grassroots organizations. In the past year, USF engaged with groups committed to gender equity, education and youth, healthcare, human rights, and environmental issues.

WHAT HAVE YOU DISCOVERED ABOUT THE POLITICAL LANDSCAPE IN D.C.?

I constantly find myself surrounded by individuals equally passionate about public service and policy-driven change. It is because of this commitment that I am able to grow and become better acquainted with life in our Nation’s Capital and at the same time take a forward step in achieving my goals.

What’s been surprising to me is the high level of drive, dedication, and ambition I encounter every day that acts as a unifying force among the community. Immersing my-self in this charged environment has helped me better understand what I want to do with my degree and how I can make the transition from undergraduate to professional life.

USF has taught me to identify what is wrong with our communities and why something has to change. Being in DC is teaching me how to actually do something about it.

What I love most about this city is that the museums and monuments are all free and open to the public. You can tell a lot about a city by what they choose their taxes to pay for and what they value. This city values history and knowledge.

FAMILY HOUSE JOINS COMMUNITY PARTNER RANKS

2013 MASTER OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS ALUMS LAND GREAT JOBS

Joey Jordan, a McCarthy Center Advocate for Community Engagement re-calls his first impression of the Family House as really feeling “like a home.” Located on nearby Irving Street, Family House is a home-away-from-home for families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses who are receiving treatment at UCSF Children’s Hospital. As an organization, Family House provides physical comfort, housing, and emotional support to the families, free from financial concerns.

The organization recently joined the list of more than 200 Community Partners that work with the McCarthy Center in providing a site for student service-learning. Students enrolled in courses like Biology of Cancer and Management and Organizational Dynamics work at the site to ensure that the house is well-stocked, clean, and prepared for incoming families. Students are assigned to working on arts and crafts, reading, and playing games with kids, hosting weekly family dinners as well as organizing and hosting food and toy drives to benefit the families.

Joey describes the sense of community at Family House as “not only powerful but also contagious.” It’s a shared sentiment of fifteen (15) students who passionately work this semester as part of the service-learning experience that takes place in so many of the McCarthy Center partner sites.
