Well, nottotally “off,” as waterpolo and paddleboardcompetitions areplanned in the bay of StJean, in front of NikkiBeach, for a day of funand games. But on Fri-day and Saturday, April12 and 13, the last twodays of racing will iden-tify the winners in eachof the classes: the max-is, the classics, the mul-ti-hulls, non-spinnakers,and spinnakers (a classthat the organizers final-ly decided to divide intothree groups accordingto ratings). And a classwas added six Melges24 boats in the race). The race itineraries areannounced each morn-ing by the president ofthe race committee,Jean Coadou, from the

French Sailing Federa-tion. The itineraries arepulled from an array of28 possibilities createdby Luc Poupon, racedirector and acclaimedsailor, who organizesthe event along withFrançois Tolède andAnnalisa Gee. Thechoice depends on the

vagaries of the weatherand to adapt to theneeds of the boats. Allof the starts are in frontof Gros Islets on Fridayor Saturday, with a firstmarker in the port chan-nel in Gustavia. A greatvantage point to watchthe races start at 10amand finish a few hours

In 1992, Buddy Melges, anAmerica's Cup champion, decided to develop a boatthat took advantage of thelatest technological devel-opments to ensure sailors abetter performance whenracing. A solid yet light-weight boat, a Melges 24 iseasy to manipulate with acrane or put into the waterusing a trailer, as well asremove the mast when nec-essary.

Designed by Reichel/Pughin San Diego, CA, the boatwent into production in1993, creating a single-hullsailboat popular on theinternational racing circuit.Measuring 24 feet long, aMelges 24 has a mast, rud-

der, bowsprit, and keel finall made of carbon fiber, and the boat can be sailedby a crew of four or five. Its large sail surface ofapproximately 1000 sq ftincludes a large 670 sq ftasymmetrical spinnaker, a264 sq ft mainsail, and 126sq ft jib.

The boat is notable for itsability to plane over thewater downwind in modestwinds, and for its combina-tion of a simple design thatis highly tunable. Thespeed record for a Melges24 is 25 knots when racing, with an average of 20knots, making it a speedylittle boat that sails welleven in extreme conditions.

L aunched in 2006,the Saint BarthBook Festivalhas always championedthe arts of reading and lit-erary creation. It all start-ed as a simple bookexchange program onUNESCO World BookDay, but over the yearsthe festival has trans-formed itself into one ofthe major cultural eventsin St Barthélemy. For thepast several years, it haspaid special attention todeveloping a taste forreading amongst stu-dents, because in a worldwhere an image oftenbears false witness to his-tory, a book remains a

place for freedom andreflection as found noplace else. As a result, the festival found itrewarding to bringauthors to local schoolsfor programs organizedin collaboration with theteachers who help selectthe authors that partici-pate each year.

2013 is true to form. There are 30 or so schoolvisits planned, as well asan atelier at the library, led by three children’sauthors invited on April15-19: Pierre Bailly, Ras-cal and Fabien Vehlmann

    For the second time, fes-

tival guests includeGéraldine Danon andPhilippe Poupon, whoare well known in SaintBarthélemy where they

live part of the year. They will present theirfilm “Une Fleur dansl’Antarctique,” whichthey made during their

But the president of theworld, persuaded that he is aninvader, chases him. In orderto escape, Jean must count

on the children and his friends…This film is based on a story byTomi Ungerer, an acclaimed illus-trator of children’s books. WhenUngerer was contacted the firsttime by the director, he asked, “Buthow will you make a big film fromsuch a small book?”

On Sunday, April 21, the tradi-tional book exchange will take

place on the dock near the WallHouse, starting at 9am, along withappearances by guest authors aswell as local writers. The morn-ing’s events also include prizes forthe young writers’ competition, inwhich 66 students participated thisyear!

These “Saint Barth Days” takeplace during Les Voiles de SaintBarth, with the Red Cross hostinga stand in the race village on thedock in Gustavia on Saturday,April 13.

The volunteers of the Red Crossdonate their time and effort to thevarious activities held to raisefunds for the organization’s well-defined projects. Projects that are

intended to improve the conditionsof our fellow citizens who findthemselves in urgent difficulty.

T he termAfterglowrefers to thepale or pinkishglow that one seesat dawn or twi-light. The termalso evokes a senseof wellbeing, orthe euphoric feeling onemight experience aftertaking drugs or havingsex. Afterglow is also thetitle of one of the eightpaintings by Americanartist Nicole Etienne, whoconceives the act of paint-ing “like that of makinglove.” Etienne is currentlyin residence at Eden RockGallery, where a show ofher work runs throughApril 15. Born in Santa Cruz, Cali-fornia, where her motherwas also a painter, Eti-enne traveled to Italy toexplore the history ofWestern art. There shediscovered the great clas-sic and Baroque masterswho inspired her workgreatly: languid femalenudes, contoured flesh, orthe red and pink tonesthat dominate delicate

complexions, evoking thepalette of a Rubens;Landscapes whose linesdisappear under a veil, atthe very moment beforeor after the sunset. Thereare several paintings ofSaint Barth among theworks on display at EdenRock Gallery, to whichthe artist is applying thefinal brushstrokes, as thisis the sixth time that Eti-enne has come to theisland. Yet Etienne hasstrong visual memoriesof the scenes to whichshe is partial: a view ofthe sea at Grand Fond,Pointe Milou, AnseMaréchal. And she paintsfrom memory… as wellas from her soul.

from Guadeloupe. OnApril 1, the final pittedthe Barracudas againstStade Cayennais fromGuyana in a game thatseemed a tough one forthe Saint Barth teamweighing in at least 100kilos less than theiropponents. Yet theirintelligent tactics andcourage allowed the“Barras” to score first, atthe 13-minute mark. Butthe Guyana team struckback and led 7 to 6before the break. In thesecond half, the “Barras”

proved their force, win-ning 17-6. Quite a winconsidering they lost tothe same team last year6-0. “There was a senseof revenge in the air forthis final,” noted theBarracuda’s coach

François Marque, afterthe game. The teamarrived back on theisland on April 3 tosavor their victory.
