Prayer for Mothers God our Creator, we pray: for new mothers, coming to terms with new responsibility ; for expectant mothers, wondering and waiting; for those who are tired, stressed or depressed; for those who struggle to balance the tasks of work and family; for those who are unable to feed their children due to poverty; for those whose children have physical, mental or emotional disabilities; for those who raise children on their own; for those who have lost a child; for those who care for the children of others; for those whose children have left home; and for those whose desire to be a mother has not been fulfilled. Dear Parents and Guardians,

Anzac Day is a time for remembering stories about war, bravery, loss and

courage. It is important that the stories are told over and over again and that

those who went before us are remembered for their bravery.

ANZAC Day occurs on 25 April every year. On this day we honour all the men

and women who have participated in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping

operations around the world, including the ANZACs (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) who

fought at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I. Incredibly, more than 100 years have passed since

Australia’s involvement in the First World War.

To cope with the tragic losses our country saw at Gallipoli, the men and women of Australia

searched for the positive in the experience. To get through such a horrendous time the soldiers

had to develop strong bonds with each other and demonstrate extraordinary courage, endurance

and bravery.

So, today, when you hear someone speak about the ANZAC spirit, think

of courage, bravery, endurance, mateship, determination and sacrifice.

These are the values that were demonstrated so strongly by the soldiers

at Gallipoli and are important in defining Australia as a nation.

ANZAC Day is not all about history. Even though Australia is not at war,

many Australians are currently serving in wars and peacekeeping

operations overseas. ANZAC Day is a particularly important date to

Australians with friends or family members in the Australian Defence

Force (ADF). On ANZAC Day, many families think of their mothers,

fathers, sons, daughters, brothers or sisters who are in war zones or on

peacekeeping missions overseas.

There are currently thousands of ADF personnel based around the world.

In many locations, Australians are working with other nations such as

New Zealand, France, Canada and the USA to maintain peace and stability. Peacekeeping is a

major role of the ADF.

Some of the tasks performed by ADF personnel can be as simple as providing dental and medical

care to locals, or veterinary assistance to livestock on farms. These acts, although seemingly

simple, can change people’s lives.

ANZAC DAY

On Monday 25th April we saw many of our sensational students join us

for the ANZAC March in Bunbury at 10.30am. We had a wonderful

turn out of our students and we were very proud of the way they

marched on the day. Mr Dudek organised the morning and we would

like to thank him and the staff that joined him on the day. Thank you

not only to our fantastic students for giving up their time but also to

our very supportive parents who bought our children on the day. It is

important that we remember those who have given their lives for our

freedom. We were led by our student executive so thank you to

Jordana, Nicholas and Leah.

Our student executive laid the wreath on behalf of our school and during the ceremony Thomas

Mills and Bailey Cowcill joined the new boys’ choir inaugurated by the Bunbury Men of Song. The

boys were part of a forty strong choir that sang during the ceremony; congratulations Thomas and

Bailey.

ANZAC LITURGY

On Friday 29th April we held our school ANZAC liturgy. Mr Bree Dudek and Mrs Lauren Walsh along

with our amazing students celebrated a very memorial liturgy. Our Liturgy was made particularly

special by the invitation of Mr Tim Thomson, first Vice President from the Bunbury RSL, who came and

spoke about the men that landed at Gallipoli. His stories helped us to present and understand what life

was like during war. Then Mrs Monica Jessop spoke about her feeling of having her son Aidan serving

in the army today. This was very moving to hear from a Mother on the safety of her son and his

determination to serve his country. Our service was poignant and really helped us to be present; War

is difficult and sad for those involved and those who wait at home. Our year

five students really helped us to gain a meaningful moment in a difficult

situation.

School Board

During the school holidays many projects have been

addressed by our School Board. You will have noticed

a number of jobsthat have been completed while school

was on holiday. Thank you to Mr Dave Salathiel who

monitored all the works and ensured they were all

completed on time. He worked diligently beside the

workmen to ensure everything was done to a high

standard.

We saw the new path outside year six re-concreted as

this path was hazardous. The undercover area in the

kindergarten saw a new path poured in the area, with the inclusion of new

limestone bocks around the sand pit. The fence was then

placed on top of the limestone blocks which we would all

agree looks much better. The old tree was ground out in

the holidays and a new path was constructed outside the

kindergarten area.

A new pump has been placed in the area near the

basketball court on the Church side to stop the path from

being undermined in winter months due to rain. We also

saw the new well near the senior play equipment have a new lid and be raised so

that it is not a trip hazard.

Thank you to the Board to for ensuring our school is well resourced and that we are constantly

maintaining our school property.

NAPLAN

From 9th May, as part of the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

National tests will be held in Literacy and Numeracy for all students in Australia at Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

The National tests assess student achievement in Literacy and Numeracy. Students will be familiar

with the test formats and the type of questions they are required to answer. The main difference is

that all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 at schools across Australia, complete the same tests on the

same days. Students will have their skills assessed in Numeracy, Reading, Writing, Spelling,

Punctuation and Grammar.

National tests will provide information on how students are progressing, and support improvements in

teaching and learning. These tests will make it easier to monitor student performance in Literacy and

Numeracy across the nation. Over 1 million students from 9,000 schools across Australia participate in

the National tests. This information will be used to evaluate what students can do and how they

perform against the National benchmarks. You can help your child by talking about these tests as a

means of showing what they know and can do, at this point in their schooling. Ease any anxiety by

explaining that everyone in Australia will be doing this test at the same time and the testing process is

an integral part of their school life. Please ensure that all students in Year Three and Five are present

next week.

Mother’s Day Stall

Thank you to our wonderful P & F who once again provided our Mother’s

Day stalls for our students to purchase gifts for their Mothers. Our P & F

are such fantastic organisers and they ensure that all our Mums will feel

special on Sunday. Thank you to Emily Fyshe and her sensational helpers

on the day.

PICK UP AND DROP OFF

Just a reminder about our students being dropped off and picked up from school. It is important that

once children are dropped off to school, that they remain in the school grounds and this is also

important in the afternoon. We ask that children do not wait for parents outside of the school

grounds or on the pavements outside of school. All children must remain in school grounds until a

parent can pick them up.

SCHOOL WEBSITE

Our new school website is up and working we will continue to update it so you will find changes to

the website during the term. Thank you to Luke Portolan who has worked so hard and long to make

our new website come to life with Webmasters. You will notice many new features of the website and

Luke will be maintaining the website.

With this in mind you, will notice the newsletter will change from fortnightly Newsletters to “weekly”

Newsletters. The Newsletter will become a two page newsletter which will include information parents

need. I will be using the website to create a blog about items and events happening in the school.

Once you would have found this information in the Newsletter. You will now find it on the Website

under “News.”

We are making this change as many parents felt the newsletter was too long and would rather have a

basic information sheet with dates and events. We will trial this new way to see if parents find this a

better method of disseminating information.

BEGINNING SCHOOL MASS

On Wednesday we celebrated our beginning of the Term Mass. Thank you to Mrs Emma Sullivan and

our fantastic year four class for leading our Mass. It is a wonderful opportunity to join together as a

school community and thank God for the term ahead. We are always delighted with the support from

our parents and extended families. Thank you to Father Jess for

celebrating the Mass with us and helping us to understand God’s

message; his homilies are always shared with our students in a way

they can understand.

LIVING ROSARY

On Tuesday the 24th of May we will be saying a Living Rosary with

our Parish community in the undercover area at 9.30am. We invite

our school and Parish community to join with us as we pray the

rosary together for our personal intentions.

WALKER LEARNING APPROACH

We would like to thank Jan Snowden from Early Life Foundations who visited our school this week

and gave further professional Development to our staff on the Walker Learning Approach. Jan also

provided a parent information afternoon in the library. This bought about much discussion on parts of

the Walker Learning Approach. We intend to hold further meetings with our parents so that they have

the opportunity to learn about the parts of this approach we have adopted at our school. Thank you

to all the parents who attended the meeting.

FAMILY FUN DAY AT CHURCH

On Sunday 15th May there will be a family fun day after Mass with many exciting events happening.

Keep this date on your calendar as it should be a wonderful event in our Parish.

MOTHERS ARE ANGELS

A baby asked God, "They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live

there being so small and helpless?"

"Your angel will be waiting for you and will take care of you."

The child further inquired, "But tell me, here in heaven I don't have

to do anything but sing and smile to be happy."

God said, "Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you.

And you will feel your angel's love and be very happy."

Again the child asked, "And how am I going to be able to

understand when people talk to me if I don't know the language?"

God said, "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with

much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak."

"And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?"

God said, "Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray."

"Who will protect me?"

God said, "Your angel will defend you even if it means risking it's life."

"But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore."

God said, "Your angel will always talk to you about Me and will teach you the way to come back to

Me, even though I will always be next to you."

At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from Earth could be heard and the child

hurriedly asked, "God, if I am to leave now, please tell me my angel's name."

"You will simply call her, 'Mom.'"

May you all have a blessed and happy Mother’s Day
